Friedrich Merz has canceled his trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The German chancellor, under mounting political pressure at home, decided Berlin needed him more than Manhattan did.
That raises an obvious question: What about Zelensky?
The Ukrainian president is expected in New York during UN week and is also scheduled to be honored by GOARCH (St. Nicholas WTC) at a September 26 event at Casa Cipriani.
But compare what the two leaders are leaving behind.
Merz faces political turmoil. Zelensky faces a country under relentless attack.
Ukraine’s own agriculture minister says roughly 90 percent of the food-logistics infrastructure operated by major retail chains has been destroyed. Kiev supermarkets have experienced shortages as warehouses, distribution centers and postal facilities have been struck.
The country’s transportation arteries are also under attack. Ukrainian officials say 1,700 railway facilities have been hit in 2026 alone. Russian strikes have targeted trains, fuel facilities and other infrastructure essential to keeping the country functioning.
Ukraine’s main Black Sea ports have also been blockaded, turning it into a landlocked country and forcing exporters toward the already congested Danube route. And winter is approaching.
Ukraine is preparing for what officials describe as a harsh winter after billions of dollars in infrastructure damage and continued attacks on the country’s economy and energy system.
So the contrast is difficult to ignore.
Merz looked at the problems confronting Germany and decided he needed to stay home. Zelenskyy must now decide whether Ukraine’s far more immediate crisis permits him to leave.
Zelensky has important reasons to come to New York, including a meeting with Trump. But the optics have changed.
When a German chancellor cancels New York because domestic politics demand his attention, it becomes harder not to ask why the president of a country enduring air raids, damaged logistics, disrupted ports, and an approaching wartime winter should consider an awards dinner in Manhattan indispensable.
Merz has made his choice. Now all eyes are on Zelensky.
