Kimberly Guilfoyle’s tenure as U.S. ambassador to Greece appears to be coming to an abrupt end. President Donald Trump’s administration has officially asked her to resign following weeks of damaging allegations involving her diplomatic conduct, personal financial dealings, and relationships with influential business interests in Greece.
White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the dramatic development Tuesday, according to the Associated Press. Although it was not immediately clear whether Guilfoyle had formally submitted her resignation, the White House signaled that her departure was expected, describing her as a valuable member of the administration and wishing her well.
The decision follows an extraordinary reversal in Washington. Only days earlier, Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly defended Guilfoyle during his visit to Athens, calling her a strong ambassador and dismissing journalists’ questions about unverified accusations. By Monday, however, Trump himself had acknowledged the administration’s dissatisfaction, telling reporters that officials were examining the situation and were unhappy with the reports.

The controversy began with a series of investigations by The Wall Street Journal that raised serious questions about Guilfoyle’s conduct before and during her diplomatic appointment. Allegations included preferential treatment of Greek commercial interests, acceptance of improper gifts and services, and an alleged request that a Trump supporter cover a $100,000 credit-card bill in exchange for access to senior administration officials.
Guilfoyle’s attorneys have vigorously denied wrongdoing, maintaining that the disputed payment compensated her for professional appearances before her nomination. They have also insisted that her private travel complied with State Department regulations. The allegations have not been established as proven misconduct.
Meanwhile, the State Department’s inspector general has reportedly been examining the accusations, while senior congressional Democrats have demanded formal investigations.
For Greece, the development raises immediate questions about the future leadership of the American diplomatic mission in Athens at a sensitive moment for bilateral relations, particularly in energy and defense cooperation.
Guilfoyle, a former Fox News personality and onetime fiancée of Donald Trump Jr., entered diplomatic service with unusually close connections to the president’s political and family circles. Those connections, however, have not prevented the White House from requesting her departure.
What began as speculation about a possible dismissal has now become an official request for resignation. The remaining question is when Guilfoyle will formally leave Athens and who Washington will appoint to succeed her.
