EDITOR’S NOTE: Professor John Ioannidis, in addition to having a very successful career in the US (here is his impressive cv), he is also involved in Greek academia… Or at least he is trying to, rather unsuccessfully… In this 16 minute TEDx talk (English subtitles) in 2015 he discusses the academic environment in Greece from the point of view of the distinguished Greek scientist abroad… And their tragic fate….
Based on Google Scholar, about 3% of the world scientists in term of academic influence are Greek-born, while the population of Greece is only 0.2% of the world population, says Ioannidis… This is a fact to make all of us proud about the famous since antiquity “Greek brains”… About 90% of these accomplished scientists flourishes outside Greece, he adds… And he goes on to discuss the impossible odds any accomplished Greek scientist would face should he/she want to have a career back in the land where they were born, grew, educated…
The eternal Greek Odyssey… Enjoy it…
