EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis): We all have noticed the recent extension of Putin’s absolute power in Russia until 2036, the terms of which will render him into a true “despot” in the full meaning of the word… Many Americans easily accuse Putin as a dictator and in general they are correct.  He is certainly one if one analyzes him from the western point of view.  And many have accused him of using religion, namely Orthodoxy, to enhance his secular power… In a sense he is stepping back to the Czarist and also the Byzantine tradition –  not to mention the Catholic entanglement of Church and State in the West before the American and the French Revolutions..

But if we want to be sincere we should recognize that, by reverting to Orthodoxy after 70 horrible years of Communism, Vladimir Putin did the right thing for the Russian people… What other choices were on the table?  Number one was “alcoholism” practiced to the extreme by the known drunkard Boris Yeltsin, who was supported by various western powers.  Secondly, the evangelical protestantism, peddled to the Russians by, among many others, the late Billy Graham… The evangelicals and Graham were addressing the Russians as if they were natives of a Pacific island… As if 1,000 years of glorious Byzantine Orthodox history did not exist… And they naturally failed…

Those of us who have a background in history and the social sciences are grateful for the analysis of Karl August Wittfogel, whose classic work “Oriental Despotism” (1957) frames the issue in realistic historical and sociological terms: Societies as large in population or as enormous in land as China and Russia, deeply rooted in their own traditions, are inherently unable to transform to a modern democratic, pluralistic state, as we have been expecting in the West.  Although it’s impossible to do justice to Wittfogel’s  massive classic work in a few lines, let’s keep in mind the basic premise as we are trying to deal once again, post-communist era, with the despotic powers of both Russia and China…

Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow, Kirill, consecrates Main Military Cathedral

  2. Thanks be to God for Russian Orthodox who prove to be more loyal to the Faith – forget about Greek Orthodox; they’ve sold out to secular leftist ethos. The Pandemic blew away their cover – what church is worth returning to?
