Mom murdered next to baby in Greece by burglars who tied up husband, killed dog
A young British mom was tortured and then murdered in front of her baby daughter in Greece on Tuesday as she tried to hide from burglars who tied up her husband and hanged their dog, according to police.
In an abhorrent crime that has shocked the Mediterranean country, the 20-year-old mom — named by local media as Caroline Crouch — was found beaten and strangled in her attic beside her 11-month-old daughter, police said.
Her husband, 32-year-old helicopter pilot Babis Anagnostopoulos, said at least three men had burst into their house in the Athens neighborhood of Glyka Nera at 5 a.m. and tied him to a chair, police told Proto Thema.
“They were wearing hoods … I was tied up,” the traumatized husband told security police, saying he was also gagged, according to Proto Thema.
“When I managed to break free, I rushed upstairs to the attic to find my wife on the floor facing down, and the baby next to her wailing,” he reportedly told cops.
Local news site Ta Nea said the killer crooks allegedly even turned their guns on the baby and threatened to shoot her if the mother did not reveal where the family valuables were hidden.
Her husband told cops that he heard at least one of them screaming, “Tell us where the money is, [or] we will kill the baby,” the reports said.
They then strangled Crouch to stop her screaming — before escaping with cash and jewelry worth around $18,250, sources told the site.
“They tied her up and tortured her, until she told them where the valuables were,” a senior investigator in Athens told the Times of London.
The baby appeared to be unharmed, with photos in the National Herald showing her being carried out of the crime scene wrapped in a blanket.
But the family dog was also killed, and left hanging on the fence of the two-story house, police said.
Grieving husband Anagnostopoulos told reporters that they “begged them not to hurt us.”
“What I and my family and my wife’s family went through, let no one go through it again,” he said during a brief trip home to get belongings.
Greece’s government on Tuesday took the rare step of offering a $365,000 reward for what the minister responsible for public order, Michalis Chrisochoidis, described as a “particularly heinous” crime.
“One rarely encounters such barbarity in Greece, in Greek society, even among criminals,” Chrisochoidis said, adding that two teams of detectives had been set up to handle the investigation.
“We’ve seen several other ugly murders throughout the years. But this was extremely brutal and violent.”
The thieves appeared to be experienced and had likely been watching the couple for some time before Tuesday’s deadly raid, police told the UK Times.
Detectives were trawling local surveillance footage to see how the gang escaped, and whether they had previously staked out the area, the outlet said.
A fourth gang member may have kept watch outside the house during the deadly raid, the reports said.
Crouch, a student of the University of Piraeus, was born in Greece but was a UK citizen, with a British father and a Filipino mother, a family friend told the UK Times, calling the murdered mom a “very beautiful girl.”
Crouch filled her social media with photos of her cuddling her baby, describing herself as a “digital creator” who was also an enthusiastic kickboxer.
She married in May 2018, and her husband Anagnostopoulos announced the “best day in a man’s life” with the birth of their daughter last June.
In a birthday tribute to Crouch, he called her “my awesome wife, closest friend, and best mom our daughter could have.”
Greeks are used to gangland killings, but the strangling of the woman in front of her child prompted shocked headlines. “Horror at Glyka Nera,” wrote the website Proto Thema.

Στο σπίτι του επέστρεψε ο 32χρονος πιλότος ελικοπτέρων, περίπου δώδεκα ώρες μετά τις εφιαλτικές στιγμές που βίωσε ο ίδιος και οι δικοί του από τους τρεις αδίστακτους εισβολείς, οι οποίοι δολοφόνησαν βάναυσα την 20χρονη σύζυγό του, με τους δημοσιογράφους να τον περιμένουν εκεί.
Συντετριμμένος, ο 32χρονος που έφτασε συνοδευόμενος από τρεις αστυνομικούς στη μεζονέτα του, στα Γλυκά Νερά, γύρω στις 19.30, προκειμένου να πάρει κάποια προσωπικά αντικείμενα, βγαίνοντας επιχείρησε να αρθρώσει μερικές λέξεις, απαντώντας στις ερωτήσεις τους για το τραγικό περιστατικό που έχει συγκλονίσει ολόκληρη την Ελλάδα. «Τα παιδιά (η αστυνομικοί) ξέρουν τη δουλειά τους. Θα τους πιάσουνε», είπε με «σπασμένη» φωνή. «Τους παρακαλέσαμε (να μη μας κάνουν κακό). Αυτό που πέρασα εγώ και η οικογένειά μου και η οικογένεια της γυναίκας μου, να μην το περάσει κανείς ποτέ ξανά», συμπλήρωσε, πριν αποχωρήσει από το σημείο.

Ανατριχίλα προκαλούν τα όσα κατάφερε να περιγράψει στους αστυνομικούς του Τμήματος Ανθρωποκτονιών ο 32χρονος, για όλα όσα συνταρακτικά βίωσε μέσα στο ίδιο του το σπίτι, τα ξημερώματα της Τρίτης. Εκεί, μεταξύ άλλων, είδε φωτογραφίες σεσημασμένων κακοποιών, αλλά και κακοποιών που έχουν αποφυλακιστεί, με την ελπίδα να αναγνωρίσει κάποιον ή κάτι. «Τους είδα ξαφνικά μπροστά μου. Τρεις, με κουκούλες full face οι δυο και ο τρίτος φορούσε το κάλυμμα λαιμού που έχουν για τις μηχανές και το είχε σηκωμένο μέχρι τη μύτη. Η σωματοδομή τους ήταν κανονική. Με τα όπλα στα χέρια σημάδευαν άλλες φορές εμένα και άλλες φορές το μωρό. Μιλούσαν πολύ καλά ελληνικά, μου έλεγαν συνέχεια που είναι τα λεφτά ρε», κατέθεσε ο 32χρονος, περιγράφοντας τις στιγμές που ήρθε αντιμέτωπος με τους εγκληματίες.
«Τους είπα που είχα κρυμμένα τα λεφτά για να τελειώσει γρήγορα το μαρτύριο. Είχαμε αγοράσει ένα οικόπεδο και είχαμε κάποια λεφτά στο σπίτι για να τα δώσω για κάποιες αρχικές εργασίες. Άκουγα τη γυναίκα μου να φωνάζει για βοήθεια δεμένη πάνω στο κρεβάτι και εγώ δεμένος στο πάτωμα. Ουρλιάζαμε να μην μας κάνουν κακό. Το μωρό έκλαιγε, η γυναίκα μου φώναζε και κάποιος ή κάποιοι έψαχναν το σπίτι να βρουν και άλλα χρήματα και κοσμήματα. Ξαφνικά έφυγαν από το δωμάτιο ενώ σταμάτησα να ακούω και τη φωνή της συζύγου μου…», πρόσθεσε στην κατάθεσή του.
Σύμφωνα, πάντως, με τα όσα έχουν προκύψει μέχρι στιγμής, οι αστυνομικοί έχουν βεβαιωθεί πως οι αδίστακτοι κακοποιοί γνώριζαν πως υπάρχουν χρήματα στο σπίτι, ενώ ήξεραν λεπτομέρειες για άλλα άτομα που έχουν συνεργαστεί με την οικογένεια του 32χρονου, στοιχεία που υποδηλώνουν πως είχαν παρακολουθήσει καλά και αρκετές φορές την κίνηση στη συγκεκριμένη μεζονέτα.
Όπως, εξάλλου, μετέδωσε το κεντρικό δελτίο ειδήσεων του ALPHA, η ΕΛ.ΑΣ. έχει ήδη στα χέρια της βίντεο στο οποίο εμφανίζεται ένας άνδρας να βρίσκεται κοντά στο σπίτι της οικογένειας και να «κατασκοπεύει» το χώρο. Οι Αρχές έχουν μεγεθύνει την εικόνα, στην προσπάθειά τους να αντλήσουν πληροφορίες που ενδέχεται να τους βοηθήσουν στην υπόθεση.
