An Italian “Oldie” For the Ages: “Una Piccolissima Serenata”!

EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis):  Yours truly is a known lover of oldies, as you may have already noticed… Today I came across “Piccolissima Serenata”, sung by Renato Carosone (released 1957, music By Giovanni Ferrio and lyrics by Antonio Amurri) and I had a blast… One of the very best Italian classics… You need to know two things: Renato Carosone was among the very few Italian singers who had a short career in the United States in the 1950s singing only in Italian. His whole life reads like a novel.  The second interesting thing: he became known for singing “canzone napoletana”, in the special Neapolitan dialect that is clearly distinct from mainstream Italian… He decided to retire before Rock and Roll made the success of big band music impossible – he explained…

ENJOY!!! and be careful, it’s very catchy!… Three versions of the song plus the original – Lyrics follow at the end…

AND THE ORIGINAL VERSION…

Piccolissima Serenata
Ogni innamorato all’innamorata
Ogni innamorato all’innamorata
Ogni innamorato all’innamorata
La sussurrerà, la sussurrerà
————————-
A Tiny Serenade
I’ll borrow a penny made from the sun,
Because I want to give it to you,
You could wear it in your blonde hair,
I will caress that golden cloud.
Chorus:
This tiny serenade,
Could be sung softly,
By every guy to his lover,
He’ll whisper it, he’ll whisper it.
I’ll borrow a penny made from the sky,
Because I want to give it to you,
You could put it on your white veil,
When I take you to the altar.
I’ll borrow a penny made from the sea,
Because I want to give it to you,
You could put it on your beautiful eyes,
I will plunge into your blue glance.
