EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis): Very few things were more painful during the pandemic than watching Australia, a true beacon of Freedom and home to hundreds of thousands of Greeks (Melbourne wants the title of the third-largest Greek city on Earth), deteriorate to the status of a concentration camp.  After the court ruling favoring Djokovic, a big ray of hope has emerged from the land down under…

Greeks and Serbs in Australia Celebrate the Court Ruling For Djokovic

Greeks Serbs support Novak Djokovic in Australia January 10 2022

Serbian world tennis champion Novak Djokovic was favoured by the judge who rejected his visa cancellation, but it seems that government intervention is underway to arrest and deport him.

“We are going through very difficult times, Novak showed how persistent he is and how much he believes in his ideals and that he is a great man and he fought not only for himself but for the whole world,” Djordje Djokovic told TV Prva.

“On the other hand, we have a system in Australia that made a decision and there was no reason for another decision, but now we have information that obviously the Minister of the Interior is above the court,” he continued, adding: “All this is political. We are connected to all social media networks and the latest information says that they want to imprison him.”

Earlier, an Australian court had acquitted him.

The reasoning of the judge, Arthur Kelly, for the decision was that the Serbian tennis player had all the documents to enter the country.

He ordered that Djokovic be released within 30 minutes and that his passport and other travel documents be returned to him, allowing the world tennis champion to claim the 21st Grand Slam of his career at the upcoming Australian Open, which if he succeeds, will be a record.

The deportation of the No. 1 tennis player in the world rankings can now be ordered only by a personal decision of the Minister of Interior and Immigration, which could mean a ban on entering the country for three years.

Given this extension of the issue, the Serb’s participation in the Australian Open is not considered certain at least at the moment.

None-the-less, following the courts decision, Greeks and Serbs hit the streets of Melbourne in celebration, with TV Avala capturing the moment that they were dancing.
