Bartholomew on Ukrainian “Cacocephaly” have finally come home to roost… Just the last question by the author is enough to convince you of the critical situation:  In the light of the negative developments on all fronts and the crisis in his relations with Cyril, which escalated after this derogatory phrase, would he repeat his historical “skasila” today? Or is he rethinking it?

Apart from the geopolitics of the states, there is also the geopolitics of the Churches.

What is happening in recent weeks starring the Russian Church and our Ecumenical Patriarchate is, unfortunately, beyond imagination and we are very sad.

Their relationship is worse than their relationship with the Catholic Church and the Vatican. An open war broke out between the homodox Patriarchates in all the lengths and breadths of the Earth. A war that threatens the backwardness of the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in the West, after 30 years of prosperous pastorate in Fanari.

This development, unfortunately, means that it is time to taste the arguments of the general turn of our foreign policy from 2009 onwards. The cessation of communication with Moscow and Russia’s strategic alliance with Turkey – we threw Putin into Erdogan’s arms – proved to be a disastrous national choice. From that moment on, Moscow allowed the gradual, systematic dismantling of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. The outpouring of two important ecclesiastical personalities, who helped to alleviate the passions, the blessed Patriarch of Alexandria Petros and Archbishop of Athens Christodoulou, further complicated the situation.

The thermometer, which had already hit “red” after the ouster of the Patriarch of Jerusalem Ireneos on the charge of Russophilia (revealed in a telegram from the American ambassador Speckhart, as it was registered in WikiLeaks), went up even more! The tension in the relations between the two Churches peaked when our Patriarchate openly took the position of the schismatic Orthodox Church of Ukraine, against the positions of the Russian Patriarchate.

An attitude that irritated not only Patriarch Cyril, but also President Putin, as the issue in question far exceeded the limits of a purely intra-church issue. The Russians are constantly telling us at the highest possible political level: “Show us respect. Do not interfere in our affairs. “Away from Ukraine.” To reflect on what happened and to understand the extent of Moscow’s annoyance, it is enough to recall that Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew ordered the abbot of the Vatopedi Monastery, Ephraim, to go to Kiev and acknowledge the Ukrainian schismatic betrayal by Russian homosexuals, with whom he maintained excellent relations. (The monastery maintains a convent at the entrance to Red Square!) Ephraim actually boarded the plane in obedience to the Patriarch, but suffered a heart attack on a flight to Kiev and was unable to complete his mission.

From that moment on, the developments to the detriment of our Ecumenical Patriarchate intensified dangerously. The Russians retaliate, take revenge and pay us with the same currency. They first announced their intention to establish an exarchate in Ankara, within the limits of the jurisdiction of our Ecumenical Patriarchate, to the delight and satisfaction of President Erdogan.

Then they announced that they would establish an exarchate in the countries of Africa, as a result of which they put in a difficult position the Patriarch of Alexandria Theodoros, who called on all the priests to turn a deaf ear to the “dirty exchanges”. Our Patriarchate there had increased its influence in Africa, especially after the “apology” of Patriarch Peter to Saint Nectarios. In addition, the open “flirtation” of the pro-Russian Patriarchate of Serbia with the Church of Skopje is currently underway, with the aim of embracing it and raising it to the chariot of influence in Moscow. The emergence of this Church as autonomous, such as the Church of Crete, or the affiliation of its Dioceses to the Ecumenical Patriarchate is urgent, if we do not want our Patriarchate to lose territory in the Balkans.

A precondition, however, is the declassification of this Church as schismatic and the reference to the resolution of the nomenclature in the future. This was followed by the recent Conference on Orthodoxy on Mount Athos, which provoked a public dispute between the US and Russian embassies in Athens.

The Americans claim that they support our Patriarchate, but they do not tell us what we gain from it! They themselves know well what they gain for themselves, all we know so far is what we lose. The Russian Patriarchate is making aggressive and hostile moves that it has never made before, despite the fact that its unacknowledged goal was to claim ecumenical primacy. In the light of these data, I wonder the following: Our Most Holy Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew answered in a very Greek and popular manner “My Skasila!” to the question whether he is bothered by the fact that the Russian Church does not mention him in its duplicates because of his attitude to the Ukrainian.

In the light of the negative developments on all fronts and the crisis in his relations with Cyril, which escalated after this derogatory phrase, would he repeat his historical “skasila” today? Or is he rethinking it?

Εκτός από τη γεωπολιτική των κρατών υπάρχει και η γεωπολιτική των Εκκλησιών.

Αυτό που συμβαίνει τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες με πρωταγωνιστή τη Ρωσική Εκκλησία και το Οικουμενικό μας Πατριαρχείο ξεπερνά, δυστυχώς, κάθε φαντασία και μας λυπεί ιδιαιτέρως.

Οι μεταξύ τους σχέσεις είναι χειρότερες από τις σχέσεις τους με την Καθολική Εκκλησία και το Βατικανό. Ξέσπασε ανοιχτός πόλεμος μεταξύ των ομόδοξων Πατριαρχείων σε όλα τα μήκη και τα πλάτη της Γης. Πόλεμος ο οποίος απειλεί την υστεροφημία του Οικουμενικού Πατριάρχη Βαρθολομαίου εις τας Δυσμάς, ύστερα από 30 χρόνια ευδόκιμης ποιμαντορίας στο Φανάρι.

Η εξέλιξη αυτή, δυστυχώς, σημαίνει ότι ήρθε η ώρα να γευτούμε τα επίχειρα της γενικότερης στροφής της εξωτερικής μας πολιτικής από το 2009 και μετά. Η διακοπή της επικοινωνίας με τη Μόσχα και η στρατηγική συμπόρευση της Ρωσίας με την Τουρκία -εμείς ρίξαμε τον Πούτιν στην αγκαλιά του Ερντογάν– απεδείχθησαν εκ των πραγμάτων ολέθρια εθνική επιλογή. Από τη στιγμή εκείνη και μετά, η Μόσχα επέτρεψε τη σταδιακή, συστηματική αποδόμηση του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου. Η εκδημία δύο σημαντικών εκκλησιαστικών προσωπικοτήτων, που βοηθούσαν στην εκτόνωση των παθών, των μακαριστών Πατριάρχη Αλεξανδρείας Πέτρου και Αρχιεπισκόπου Αθηνών Χριστοδούλου, περιέπλεξε ακόμη περισσότερο την κατάσταση.

Το θερμόμετρο, που ήδη είχε χτυπήσει «κόκκινο» μετά την καθαίρεση του Πατριάρχη Ιεροσολύμων Ειρηναίου με την κατηγορία του ρωσόφιλου (αποκαλύπτεται σε τηλεγράφημα του Αμερικανού πρεσβευτή Σπέκχαρτ, όπως αυτό καταχωρίστηκε στα WikiLeaks), ανέβηκε κι άλλο! Η ένταση στις σχέσεις των δύο Εκκλησιών κορυφώθηκε όταν το Πατριαρχείο μας έλαβε ανοιχτά τη θέση της σχισματικής Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας της Ουκρανίας, κόντρα στις θέσεις του Ρωσικού Πατριαρχείου.

Στάση που δεν εκνεύρισε τα μάλα μόνο τον Πατριάρχη Κύριλλο, αλλά και τον πρόεδρο Πούτιν, καθώς το επίμαχο ζήτημα ξεπερνούσε κατά πολύ τα όρια ενός αμιγώς ενδοεκκλησιαστικού ζητήματος. Οι Ρώσοι μάς το λένε συνεχώς στο ανώτατο δυνατό πολιτικό επίπεδο: «Δείξτε μας σεβασμό. Μην αναμειγνύεστε στις υποθέσεις μας. Μακριά από την Ουκρανία». Για να αναλογιστεί κανείς τι συνέβη και για να κατανοήσει το μέγεθος της ενόχλησης της Μόσχας αρκεί να υπομνησθεί ότι ο Οικουμενικός Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος διέταξε τον ηγούμενο της Μονής Βατοπεδίου Εφραίμ να μεταβεί στο Κίεβο και να αναγνωρίσει την ουκρανική σχισματική Εκκλησία, με συνέπεια να αντιμετωπίσει την κατηγορία της προδοσίας από Ρώσους ομοδόξους, με τους οποίους διατηρούσε άριστες σχέσεις. (Η μονή διατηρεί μετόχι στην είσοδο της Κόκκινης Πλατείας!) Ο Εφραίμ πράγματι επιβιβάστηκε στο αεροπλάνο κάνοντας υπακοή στον Πατριάρχη, αλλά έπαθε έμφραγμα εν πτήσει προς το Κίεβο και δεν κατάφερε να φέρει σε πέρας την αποστολή του.

Από τη στιγμή εκείνη και μετά, οι εξελίξεις εις βάρος του Οικουμενικού μας Πατριαρχείου πύκνωσαν επικινδύνως. Οι Ρώσοι αντεπιτίθενται, εκδικούνται και μας πληρώνουν με το ίδιο νόμισμα. Πρώτα ανακοίνωσαν την πρόθεσή τους να ιδρύσουν εξαρχία στην Αγκυρα, μέσα στα όρια της δικαιοδοσίας του Οικουμενικού μας Πατριαρχείου, προς τέρψη και ικανοποίηση του προέδρου Ερντογάν.

Έπειτα ανακοίνωσαν ότι θα ιδρύσουν εξαρχία στις χώρες της Αφρικής, με συνέπεια να φέρουν σε δύσκολη θέση τον Πατριάρχη Αλεξανδρείας Θεόδωρο, ο οποίος κάλεσε όλους τους ιερείς να κλείσουν τα αυτιά τους στα «βρόμικα ανταλλάγματα». Το εκεί Πατριαρχείο μας είχε αυξήσει την επιρροή του στην Αφρική, ειδικώς μετά τη «συγγνώμη» του Πατριάρχη Πέτρου προς τον άγιο Νεκτάριο. Πλέον αυτών, είναι σε εξέλιξη αυτή τη στιγμή το ανοιχτό «φλερτ» του ρωσόφιλου Πατριαρχείου της Σερβίας προς την Εκκλησία των Σκοπίων, με στόχο να την αγκαλιάσει και να την ανεβάσει στο άρμα επιρροής της Μόσχας. Η ανάδειξη της Εκκλησίας αυτής σε αυτόνομη, όπως η Εκκλησία της Κρήτης, ή η υπαγωγή των Μητροπόλεών της στο Οικουμενικό Πατριαρχείο επείγει, αν δεν θέλουμε να χάσει το Πατριαρχείο μας έδαφος στα Βαλκάνια.

Προϋπόθεση, όμως, είναι ο αποχαρακτηρισμός της Εκκλησίας αυτής ως σχισματικής και η παραπομπή της επίλυσης του ονοματολογικού στο μέλλον. Ακολούθησε, τέλος, το πρόσφατο Συνέδριο για την Ορθοδοξία στο Άγιον Όρος, το οποίο προκάλεσε τη δημόσια αντιδικία μεταξύ των πρεσβειών των ΗΠΑ και της Ρωσίας στην Αθήνα.

Οι Αμερικανοί υποστηρίζουν ότι στηρίζουν το Πατριαρχείο μας, αλλά τι κερδίζουμε από αυτό δεν μας το λένε! Οι ίδιοι ξέρουν καλά τι κερδίζουν για τους εαυτούς τους, εμείς το μόνο που ξέρουμε μέχρι αυτή τη στιγμή είναι τι χάνουμε. Το Ρωσικό Πατριαρχείο προχωρά σε επιθετικές και εχθρικές κινήσεις που δεν είχε κάνει ποτέ στο παρελθόν, παρά το γεγονός ότι ο ανομολόγητος στόχος του ήταν η διεκδίκηση των οικουμενικών πρωτείων. Υπό το φως αυτών των δεδομένων διερωτώμαι το εξής: Ο παναγιότατος Οικουμενικός μας Πατριάρχης Βαρθολομαίος απάντησε ελληνοπρεπέστατα και λαϊκότατα «Σκασίλα μου!» στην ερώτηση αν ενοχλείται από το γεγονός ότι η Ρωσική Εκκλησία δεν τον μνημονεύει στα δίπτυχά της εξαιτίας της στάσης του στο Ουκρανικό.

Υπό το φως των αρνητικών εξελίξεων σε όλα τα μέτωπα και της κρίσης στις σχέσεις του με τον Κύριλλο, η οποία παροξύνθηκε μετά την υποτιμητική αυτή φράση του, θα επανελάμβανε και σήμερα την ιστορική «σκασίλα» του; Ή μήπως το ξανασκέφτεται;
