EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis): Helleniscope’s readers already know that the so-called “budding democracy” in Zelensky’s Ukraine has introduced a law in 2019 which bans the use of Russian in most official functions all over Ukraine – taking the country backward (previous laws allowed regional and minority languages a special status).  Russian, native to 30% of Ukrainian citizens and preferred means of communication to over 50% is not a “minority” or regional language and banning it is a severe violation of human rights.

A few days ago the “budding democracy” announced that they are about to introduce a law that will outlaw Ukrainian Orthodox Church” (UOC) led by Metropolitan Onufriy, truly a holy man. UOC is an autocephalous Church, followed by 70% of Orthodox faithful in Ukraine and organized as a Ukrainian legal entity but being under the Moscow Patriarchate – much like our Church is under the Istanbul Patriarchate WITHOUT EVEN BEING AUTONOMOUS!!!  This law will take away all churches, monasteries, and other institutions and transfer them to the State authorities!!

Some “voices” of the Istanbul Patriarchate – which has lost de facto the title “Ecumenical” – are stupidly rejoicing at the atrocious idea… For years they were ignoring the violence against UOC which has now become state violence… Russian officials at all levels have been warning them about banning the Russian language.  Are they so stupid as to believe that Vladimir Putin will let them “desecrate” the Holy Lavras in Kiyv, where Saint Vladimir was baptized a thousand years ago?

Not only the DC establishment but the Zelensky government have forced us to remember many times recently Einstein’s quote: “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.

Verkhovna Rada publishes text of bill to ban UOC

The bill of the people’s deputy from VO “Svoboda” provides for the nationalization of the Lavras, churches and other property of the UOC communities.

The Verkhovna Rada has published a bill to ban the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

According to the draft Law of Ukraine No. 7204 of March 22, 2022 “On Banning the Moscow Patriarchate on the Territory of Ukraine”, published on the VR website, its author is Oksana Savchuk, a deputy who entered the Rada on the lists of the All-Ukrainian Association “Svoboda” party in district No. 83 (Ivano-Frankivsk).

The bill provides for a ban on the territory of Ukraine of the Moscow Patriarchate – the Russian Orthodox Church and religious organizations that are part of it, “including the Ukrainian Orthodox Church”.

“All church property of the higher bodies of church authority and administration of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine and religious organizations that are part of the Russian Orthodox Church in Ukraine, including the Kyiv Metropolis of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, synodal institutions, eparchial administrations, within 48 hours from the date of entry into force of this law is inventoried and nationalized in accordance with the procedure established by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine,” the document says.

Article 2 provides that religious communities, monasteries and theological educational institutions of the Moscow Patriarchate may change their subordination within 14 days from the day this law comes into force in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Freedom of Conscience and Religious Organizations”, which will allow them to keep all their property.

Article 4 states that the Holy Dormition Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the Holy Dormition Pochaiv Lavra, the Holy Dormition Sviatogorsk Lavra and other architectural monuments of national importance owned or used by the Moscow Patriarchate become state-owned, and transactions (decisions) on their use are cancelled.

Article 5 states that when changing the subordination of religious communities, monasteries and theological educational institutions of the Moscow Patriarchate, Ukraine checks information on anti-Ukrainian or any anti-state activities or collaboration with the Russian aggressor and, if this information is confirmed, brings the perpetrators to criminal liability in accordance with the current legislation.

As reported, another bill to ban the UOC was submitted to the Verkhovna Rada.

  1. I don’t think that this is politically viable. (Reality check!) If they think that Moscow is ticked off now, just wait until they see the full might of the Bear swinging on them!

  2. We (The civilized world) had a chance in the 90th to take “bears” nuclear teeth out. Now we have to do it at once and forever! Religion? Russian orthodox church? Patriarch as a KGB operative? Don’t make me laugh!

    • You can laugh all you want at the 50 or former or current CIA “bigwigs” who lied to all of us and are now proven to have helped steal the last presidential elections… When discussing power and secret services or ecclesiastical authorities’ relations to power, you cannot be so blind: look at how they manipulate Pat. Bartholomew and every patriarch since 1945 (take a look at orthodoxhistory.org whose articles we have republished…) Alternatively, if you want to have an example of what it means to be an intelligence service operative take a look at AB Elpidoktonos…
Without first looking the mirror you cannot in good faith make such comments…

  3. “We must secure a firm spiritual and moral foundation for our society… The law can protect morality and should do so…We must wholeheartedly support the institutions that are the carriers of traditional values…”
