Painting by Nikolaos Gyzis…
EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis): I was fifteen years old when I read this beautiful poem for the first time, “The Monogram,” by Nobel Prize laureate Odysseas Elytis (biography here), and I have been trying since then, in vain, to find a love poem to match its beauty… (Yes, some verses of Homer or the Bible and Khalil Gibran’s “On Marriage” come close, but… selecting the “best” love poem is as subjective a choice as falling in love – and in this way, I can easily escape the criticism for the absoluteness of my title…)
More than any other feature, the lyricism, the emotions, the symbolism, it is the inimitable ebb and flow of “The Monogram” that spells “l-o-v-e” in such a unique way… To catch this ebb and flow, you have to read it aloud – or listen to it…
I came across “The Monogram” again recently, and I thought it would be the perfect companion for the last part of the Summer…
Below in English and Greek… If you understand Greek well enough, the poem is more enjoyable in the original Greek version – as is usually the norm in literature… But the power of the poem is not in its Greek idioms but in its symbolism, and so the English version is also very potent…
===================
The English language is very poor to
translate this special poem.
There is no language on earth to translate exactly
the Greek language .
Poetry and language are meaningless if one cannot understand what is being said. The purpose of language is to communicate a message and in the church the purpose is worship and communication of the gospel.
As I said many times I agree with this statement. But on this occasion, reading one of the most beautiful poems ever written at any language, you have to have the sensitivity to appreciate that Greek is the only language on Earth spoken and written continuously for 3,000 years…
If this does not give you pause, there is nothing else to discuss here…
Thank God that we lived to 2022,
when there is instant translation with AI of English into ANY language and ANY language into English and soon into ANY other!
Its amazing what we Humans have accomplished the last two decades!
Lets continue living with GOOD WILL AMONG MEN AND IN PEACE!
