Our “Greek Independence Day Parades” all over America are not simply celebratory and “cultural heritage events,” but they have provided, especially since the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus, an opportunity to promote issues concerning Greece, Cyprus, and Hellenism in general. This year our theme in the New York Parade will be the “Return of the Parthenon Marbles To Greece.”
A few weeks ago, at a Federation of NY meeting in preparation for this year’s parade, I offered to put together a few slogans. And so I did with the help of a few friends… These (except the one on the title) were announced at a subsequent meeting and were somehow approved. Some are old, some are reformatted, and some are new… They can be used by all organizers of our parades throughout the country in any fashion they wish. It’s Helleniscope’s gift to our parades and our community…
Let me say a few words about the first and the last of these slogans: “Hellas! The Country the Whole Of Humanity Can Call Home!” and “Hellenic Peaceful Cosmopolitanism: The future of Humanity”… In the weeks and months ahead, I will present the idea of applying the concept of “Hellenic Cosmopolitanism” in a more specific fashion. As practiced by Hellenes in antiquity and through the centuries, Hellenic cosmopolitanism is precisely opposite to aggressive, exploitative, hegemonic “models” that have brought humanity to today’s disaster, one little step before a nuclear catastrophe. Western civilization and the world need to be re-baptized to these ideals as humanity looks forward to a better future.
