EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis): As the whole country of Greece awaits the response of the Supreme Court (“Arios Pagos”) on whether a legal political party will be able to participate in the May 21st elections, I, as a student of history, am worried about the “chaos” to ensue because of this constitutional coup d’etat, initiated by Mitsotakis and his associates.  I am afraid when I note a simultaneous similar constitutional disorder in the US – regarding the participation of President Trump in the 2024 elections.  This reminds me of 1974, when we had “twin” constitutional upheavals in both countries: Nixon’s resignation after Watergate in the US and the fall of the military dictatorship in Athens in late November 1973, as the Papadopoulos dictatorship was preparing for free democratic elections.  Hellenism paid a heavy toll then: the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.  Hopefully, this fear of the historical precedent will wake up all sides and lead to unity and normalcy in Greece…

Συγγνώμη, έχετε ξαναδεί ανώτατο δικαστικό δημοκρατικής χώρας να δέχεται ομοβροντίες πυρών από πολιτικά κόμματα, βουλευτές, συνταγματολόγους και… δημοσιογράφους, επειδή κατήγγειλε την παρέμβαση της εκτελεστικής εξουσίας στο έργο του; Εχετε ξαναδεί να τον καταγγέλλει με ύφος κήνσορα υπουργός, πρώην περιθωριακός ακροδεξιός, αρνητής του Ολοκαυτώματος, που μεταμορφώθηκε σε γλοιώδη υπάλληλο του συστήματος για να εκπληρώσει τις όψιμες κοινωνικές του φιλοδοξίες; Και να τον αποθεώνουν σύσσωμα τα φιλοκυβερνητικά μέσα ενημέρωσης, επειδή δεν αφήνει τη Δικαιοσύνη να διαμορφώσει ανεπηρέαστη την κρίση της;

Εχετε μήπως ξαναδεί «τροπολογία» που υποχρεώνει δικαστικό σώμα να συνεδριάσει σε πλήρη σύνθεση, με στόχο την εκμαίευση «βολικού αποτελέσματος» στην ψηφοφορία; Εχετε διανοηθεί κυβέρνηση να υπαινίσσεται -ευθέως, πλην σαφώς- ότι δεν εμπιστεύεται την κρίση πέντε ανώτατων δικαστικών και θέλει… κι άλλους πέντε, πιο μπόσικους, για να διασφαλίσει τη μικροκομματική της επιδίωξη;

Τέλος, θα μπορούσατε να φανταστείτε τη διάδοχο του παραιτηθέντος να περιγράφεται ως «δικαστικός εκσυγχρονιστικών αντιλήψεων» και λάτρης του… Βαγγέλη Βενιζέλου, ο οποίος επίσης έψεξε στον αντιπρόεδρο του Αρείου Πάγου επειδή είχε το… θράσος να αντιμιλήσει σε υπουργούς, όταν του υπέδειξαν πώς θα κάνει τη δουλειά του;

Ωραία εικόνα στον Παράδεισο του σύγχρονου Μωυσή! Υπουργοί να χειραγωγούν δικαστές, συνταγματολόγοι να χειροκροτούν την πασιφανή θεσμική εκτροπή, μέσα ενημέρωσης να προκαταλαμβάνουν την κρίση της νέας προέδρου του Α΄ Τμήματος του Αρείου Πάγου, υποστηρίζοντας με αυτάρεσκη ικανοποίηση ότι είναι του… κλίματος Βενιζέλου. Για σκεφτείτε το λιγάκι. Και όλο αυτό το νοσηρό γαϊτανάκι να ξετυλίγεται με επίκληση… δημοκρατικών ευαισθησιών. Οτι χρειάζεται, δηλαδή, και λίγο… στραμπούληγμα των θεσμών για να θωρακιστεί το πολίτευμα από την «απειλή Κασιδιάρη». Πουλάνε αντιφασισμό και δημοκρατία αυτοί οι ασυνείδητοι που ανταγωνίζονται σε αυταρχικές μεθοδεύσεις τριτοκοσμικά καθεστώτα της Υποσαχάριας Αφρικής! Μη τυχόν χάσουν την καρέκλα. Σαν δεν ντρέπονται λιγάκι…

The authoritarians of Mitsotakis are allegedly selling “democracy”

They are selling anti-fascism and democracy by these unconscious people who compete in authoritarian methods with third-world regimes.

Excuse me, have you ever seen a supreme judge of a democratic country come under fire from political parties, parliamentarians, constitutionalists and… journalists, because he denounced the interference of the executive branch in his work? Have you ever seen him denounced in a censorious tone by a minister, a former fringe far-right, Holocaust denier, who transformed himself into a slimy system employee to fulfill his late social ambitions? And to be idolized by the pro-government media, because he does not let the Judiciary form its judgment uninfluenced?

Have you ever seen an “amendment” that compels a full bench of the judiciary to bring about a “convenient result” in the vote? Have you imagined a government hinting – directly, but not clearly – that it does not trust the judgment of five supreme judges and wants… five more, more powerful, to ensure its small-party pursuit?

Finally, you could imagine the successor of the resigned being described as a “judiciary of modernizing ideas” and a fan of … Vangelis Venizelos, who also lied to the vice-president of the Supreme Court because he had the … audacity to contradict ministers, when they told him how to do his job?

Nice picture in Paradise of the modern Moses! Ministers to manipulate judges, constitutionalists to applaud the obvious institutional deviation, media to prejudge the judgment of the new president of the 1st Department of the Supreme Court, claiming with smug satisfaction that she is of the… climate of Venizelos. Think about it a little. And all this morbid merry-go-round unfolds by invoking… democratic sensibilities. What is needed, in other words, is a little… twisting of the institutions to shield the state from the “Kassidiari threat”. They are selling anti-fascism and democracy by these unconscious people who compete in authoritarian methods with the third-world regimes of Sub-Saharan Africa! Lest they lose the chair. As if they are not a little ashamed…
