By Nick Stamatakis

When an Archbishop of the supreme theological stature of Anastasios of Albania, who is considered to be at the top of all Orthodox leaders, Greek or non-Greek, because of his knowledge and wisdom, feels the need to “come out swinging” against Elpidoktonos for his latest “accomplishment”, the election of Bishop Koja, for the Albanian-speaking parishes of America, then you know that Elpidoktonos has reached the end of the road…

The words and phrases used by the Archdiocese of Albania (in the official statement – below in English and Greek) in describing the past events involving Theophan Koja are truly disturbing: “He led a group of ultra-nationalists”, “divisive”, “he expelled… faithful from a Church”, installed a “schismatic” etc… All these painful events indicating an extremely anti-Greek group still in charge of a church of Elbasan.

AB Anastasios of Albania does not mince his words and accuses Elpidophoros directly for these “unexpected events,” saying plainly that these were “due to the insistence of the Archbishop of America, Elpidophoros”…

My friends, Elpidoktonos picked an anti-Greek to bring him into the fold of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.  Why? Maybe because he was working for the Turkish Intelligence and the Turkish Foreign Ministry before his election in 2019 – and still is today? And they have set their main goal to dilute the Greek communities abroad in any way possible.  The ties between the Albanian government and Turkey are well-known, and they include military cooperation at the northern border of Greece!…

Frankly, I am not surprised at all… It was one of the three or four main reasons I gave him the nickname Elpidoktonos on the day of his election…

Let’s not forget that Pat. Bartholomew is equally responsible for this debacle: Forever jealous of the intellectual stature of Anastasios, he cannot swallow the fact that AB Anastasios stood against him with reason and wisdom on the issue of Ukrainian autocephaly. The intellectual ineptitude of Bartholomew could never measure up against the arguments of Anastasios… But Bartholomew had to take “revenge” by undermining the Church of Albania – that’s how “small” he is…

Fr. Theophan (Arjan) Koja was elected Auxiliary Bishop for Albanians in the USA!

Archimandrite Theophan (Arjan) Koja, known to the Orthodox of Albania as a leader of divisive actions, was born in Tirana in 1966. He attended for a while the seminary in Durrës and then went to Romania, where he was ordained a deacon and later a priest. Returning to the country, at the head of a group of ultra-nationalists, on October 8th, 1995, he expelled the celebrants of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania during the celebration of the Divine Liturgy from the Holy Church of the Panagia in the Castle, in the old town of Elbasan. There he installed Nikolla Marku, “ordained” by a schismatic Bishop of the Church of Skopje, under the name “Independent National Albanian Orthodox Church of Saint Maria Elbasan” (Kisha Ortodokse e pavarur Kombetare shqiptare Shen Maria Elbasan). (For an account of this painful divisive action see the journal Ngjallja – November 1995).

Thereafter, his accomplice Nikolla Marku, has not ceased publicly calling the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania as Greek. Using purely nationalist and political terminology, Nikolla Marku continues to occupy the historic Orthodox Church of Elbasan to this day. (See more than 15 related responses in the Ngjallja journal e.g. November 2015, February 2016, April 2016, November 2018).

After his failure, Archimandrite Theophan settled in the USA, where he joined the Romanian Church. He never sought forgiveness for his disruptive actions in the early years of the restoration of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of Albania. Three years ago, he moved to Boston and sought to become Bishop in succession to Metropolitan Nikon (Liolin). However, the leadership of the O.C.A. avoided his election, when they received reliable information of his subversive actions.

Recently he sought to join the Greek Orthodox Church of America. Archbishop Elpidophoros promised him elevation to the Episcopate, and with a rapid procedure, according to the official press release, he was elected Bishop of Philomelion “serving the pastoral needs of the Albanian Orthodox Diocese under the jurisdiction of the Mother Church of Constantinople”.

Surprise and bewilderment are widespread among the Orthodox of Albania regarding this unexpected development due to the insistence of the Archbishop of America, Elpidophoros. We confine ourselves to the necessary reminder of the divisive problems provoked by Archimandrite Theophan during the reconstruction from the ruins of the longsuffering Church of Albania.

A priest formerly of the Orthodox Church in America has been elected Bishop of Philomelion to serve the Patriarchate of Constantinople’s Albanian Diocese of America.

The previous ruling hierarch, Metropolitan Ilia (Katre), reposed in the Lord in October.

The election ceremony of Archimandrite Theophan (Koja) was held in the Patriarchate yesterday:

Fr. Theophan was born in Albania in 1966. He received his theological education in Romania, and was serving in the Orthodox Church in America’s Romanian Orthodox Episcopate.

He put himself forwards as a candidate for bishop of the OCA’s own Albanian Archdiocese, but the Holy Synod elected Igumen Nikodhim (Preston) in September.

Fr. Theophan was received into the Patriarchate of Constantinople a few weeks ago and has been assigned to Holy Trinity Albanian Orthodox Church in South Boston, reports the OCA’s Romanian Orthodox Episcopate.

The Albanian Diocese currently consists of two parishes, one mission parish, the Philomelion House in Las Vegas, and the St. Nicholas Orthodox Christian Academy in Reno.

  2. What a joke! Not sure how such a tiny Albanian Diocese can exist within the GOA, and even have it’s own bishop? The Albanian Archdiocese within the OCA has over 10+ parishes, and that (barely) justifies having a bishop!

  3. “…then you know that Elpidoktonos has reached the end of the road…”

I wish this was the case but time and time again he has shown that he will continue as Archbishop.

This scandal will pass and then another one will come along, and another after that, and another after that. And that’s just the remained of 2023. All the while Elpi will remain and the Orthodox of ALL jurisdictions will continue to be scandalized and nothing will be done.

Sorry to seem pessimistic but we’ve been given zero reasons to believe he will be removed.

    • History teaches us that there is a limit and an end to all these devilish games. Nobody can pretend they are leaders of a church with no followers… But above all, the whole system that he represents, the globo-homo, woke, BLM, ecumenist religious/political system is bound to collapse – and it will take both Bartholomew and Elpidoktonos down with it. How am I so sure? Well I was a lonely voice that predicted his trajectory – and gave him the nickname Elpidoktonos – with admirable accuracy and therefore I have earned the right to make such predictions now. Excuse the “arrogance” on my part, but this is what it is.

  4. Perhaps this is what he’s trying to accomplish:

By creating “Exarchates for the Slavs”, “Bishops for the Albanians”, etc, a possible long-term objective would be to “squeeze out” competition and dissolve the Synod of Orthodox Bishops, leaving one “supreme” Orthodox commander-in-chief for N. America, (under one Patriarchate), and “forcing” all orthodox populations under him…

Perhaps this “scenario” is viewed as a “solution” to the current anti-canonical situation, where multiple Orthodox bishops claim jurisdiction over the same geographical area (i.e. how many have the title of Bishop of NY, or America, etc…)…yet the historical reality of which jurisdiction first set foot in N. America is largely ignored by today’s Phanariotes… Archbishop Anastasios’ rebuke is testimony to a more likely event of increased rift and division to come under the current “prince of innovation”…

  5. Entire Orthodox world can’t wait for the spoiled rotten Elpidoktonos to leave. If it were AB Spyridon doing 1/3 of Elpi’s mess he’d be deposed quickly. Why is it taking so long this time?
    It’s because Woke took over!

  6. I keep on reading on this website, that Elpidoktonos is running on borrowed time, his tenure is ending, he will be removed etc.

Why is he still the Archbishop?

    • Agaim, I was a lonely voice when I gave him the nickname Elpidoktonos at the day of his election, when nobody else could see what he represented. And I am again now a rather lonely voice having to deal with the doubters like you who cannot see that NO LEADER OF ANY SOCIAL INSTITUTION CAN STAY IN POWER WITHOUT POPULAR SUPPORT. If you know history you understand that even kings could not stay in power without the love of the people. Elpidoktonos in this respect is already gone. It’s a matter of time…

  7. I’m not surprised. I don’t think I’ll ever step inside a GOA parish again until this person sitting in the throne of the Archbishop of the GOA is removed. Heavenly God and Father hear our prayers, “O Lord, save Thy people and bless Thine inheritance”!
