In a surprising turn of events, Disney+ has decided not to stream the highly controversial 6-episode TV series “Atatürk” on its platform, succumbing to pressure from the Armenian lobby, the Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA) in the USA.

“ATATÜRK” is about the life of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founding father of modern-day Turkey. The series glorifes this infamous genocidal Turkish dictator.

The news was reported by the hardline pro-Erdogan newspaper Yeni Şafak, which credited the ANCA’s #CancelAtaturk social media campaign with Disney+’s surprise decision not to stream the Ataturk series.

The $8 million production, which was originally set to air on October 29, 2023, on the 100th anniversary of the Turkish Republic, will now be released as a feature film only in cinemas in Turkey on November 3, 2023.

The ANCA called on Disney+ “to cancel its series that glorifies Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, a Turkish dictator and genocide murderer, with the blood of millions of Greek, Armenian, Assyrian, Chaldean, Syriac, Aramaic, Maronite and other Christian martyrs in its hands.”

“Disney, a children’s channel, should not glorify Kemal Ataturk, a racist, genocidal dictator responsible for the deaths of countless Christians and Kurds. Teach peace, not hate,” said the ANCA.

The trailer focuses on then Lieutenant Colonel Mustafa Kemal before the Battle of Chunuk Bair. The series is directed by Mehmet Ada Öztekin, with Aras Bulut Iynemli starring as Mustafa Kemal.

  1. Whew. There is a lot to digest here. I perused the Greek Genocide Resource Center. I am in awe! I read quite a few articles this evening. I will be delving into this site and the other articles Helleniscope made available for us to read. I am deeply saddened.

  2. This is great news! I don’t know if anyone has noticed but Netflix has been streaming Turkish movies/series, and one that glorifies the sultan Mehemet who conquered Constantinople. So to hear this makes me very happy!

    For those of you who are not familiar with this history of the Turkish genocide of the Armenians and the Greek communities in Turkey I suggest you read, The Blight of Asia by George Horton (it might be out of print) or The Burning Tigris by Peter Balakian.
