EDITOR’S NOTE.  We will wait for the dust to settle before we analyze the election of this 30-year-old Archmandrite as the new Metropolitan of Mexico. His age and the fact that he was serving under the AB of Greece and had to be quickly transferred to the Patriarchate to be elected as the Metropolitan of Mexico raised many eyebrows.

The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected Archimandrite Iakovos Andriopoulos a short while ago by popular vote as the new Metropolitan of Mexico.

Father Iakovos, from February 2023 until today, held the position of General Hierarchal Commissioner of the Archdiocese of Athens.

It should be noted that the Metropolitan of Mexico, Mr. Athenagoras, was appointed as the new Metropolitan of Viziy.

  1. If you study the triangle Bartholomew – Ieronymos – Metropolitan of Nea Ionia a bit closely, it may become much clearer now why this announcement suddenly follows Elpidophoros’ visit with Ieronymos…

In my speculative opinion, it is not by chance that Iakovos (a US citizen with tenure & experience in the administrative offices of the Church of Greece) is returning to this side of the Atlantic…

Ladies and gentlemen, use your imagination about who is currently “on deck” for replacing the aging (or otherwise incompetent) GOARCH hierarchy with “young, energetic, loyal soldiers of Constantinople”…Did they just add Iakovos “onto the eligible candidate list”?

    • If we go with just the resume, and compare to the “job description”, one might say that it’s not “impressive”, but rather impressive “window-dressing”…this is the resume of an administrative technocrat. Has never been fully responsible for a parish, has never spiritually led a brotherhood in a monastery (like the title “archimandrite” exclusively meant once upon a time)…a Metropolitan needs the experience to lead a flock to Christ, and guide shepherds based on prior pastoral experience (that this individual clearly doesn’t have on paper)

But then again, if the Church is treated as a “business” and not a “spiritual hospital”, then this “administrative” resume works quite well for sure…

And for those who like to pay attention to detail…the Canons provide for minimum age limits for Deacon / Presbyter / Bishop, and it appears these Canons have been violated at least twice already with this specific individual…once when he was ordained a presbyter, and now again as an “underaged” bishop…

This is a “fast-track” promotion for a reason, folks…we’ll probably find out the exact reasons in the coming 12 to 24 months, but speculation will be rampant in the meantime…

  2. He only attending HCHC for an undergraduate degree! Do a quick search under Ilias Andriopoulos and you discover he earned a Bachelor’s degree in 2015 from HCHC. There is no record of him earning a Master’s degree from HCHC! It is sickening how the official announcement acts like he got a Master of Divinity degree from HCHC. He wasn’t even a seminarian! He got ordained in Greece following earning his Bachelor’s degree, while his classmates had to attend another 3 years of education to just be considered for ordination. He isn’t even eligible to be incardinated as a priest in the GOA!!! Can another find out where he earned a master’s degree in theology? Not a chance, cause it never happened!

    • Maybe he had other, concealed, talents appreciated much both by AB Ieronymos and the Patriarch… Lack of theological education means nothing much… Just take a look at Elpidophoros…

  3. Graduate of Holy Cross?… Naaah suboar Education as for his so called Resume they are just empty titles which don’t show any tangible achievements… Which shows that most likely he is buttered up by a network and not by his own merit… But as the Greeks say… “ΑΡΧΗ ΑΝΔΡΑ ΔΕΙΚΝΥΣΙ”… With the miserable failure of another “padded resume” Clergyman i.e Schismatophoros… We have learned the hard way not to get too optimistic about our current Clergy and Hierarchs the majority of which prove below the titles and the schema they carry… We will for sure pray for him and hope Orthodoxy will flourish in Mexico especially as the Schismatic and heretic Vatican which dominates Mexico is rightfully in its downfall… Time for our One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic church to fill in the spiritual vaccuum in Mexico and help mend and uplift its social ills ridden Mexican society.
