Next Sunday is designated by Archbishop Elpidophoros as “AHEPA Day.” The occasion presents AHEPA with an opportunity to right a wrong: to recognize the Greek children it harmed irreparably with its shady adoptions in the 1950s.
Does AHEPA have the moral stamina to embrace its victims today after nearly seven decades of neglect? Will AHEPA help them regain their Greek citizenship, a birthright guaranteed by international conventions? Will AHEPA assist their efforts to find their roots in Greece?
What happened?
On May 5, 1959, headline news announced that high-ranking AHEPA officials, including past supreme presidents Stephen S. Scopas and Leo J. Lamberson, were arrested for human trafficking, selling Greek babies in the black market in the United States. Evidence was presented that AHEPA’s agents in Greece scouted hospitals, orphanages, and even peasant homes in the countryside for babies they would send for adoption in the United States. They processed adoptions in Greek courts under streamlined proceedings that AHEPA had lobbied for which waived background checks, follow-up visits, and the requirement that adoptive parents appear in person before the adoption court. The children were then transported to the United States and delivered to high-paying customers, who paid between $1,500 and $10,000 per child (in 1950s dollars – $16,000 – $115,000 in today’s dollars). Some of the new parents were previously found unfit and rejected by American adoption agencies.

It was reported that 98% of the adoptive parents were not Greek nor Orthodox Christian and that 78% of them were Jewish Americans. These children were thus denied their fundamental birthright to be raised in the nationality and faith they were born in. That right was already guaranteed by Greek laws and Orthodox Church doctrine. Today, it is guaranteed by international conventions, such as the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The criminal charges against AHEPA’s leaders and agents in 1959 were eventually dismissed because it was erroneously believed the adoptions were legal under Greek laws. American courts reasoned that if the children were already adopted before entering the United States, AHEPA’s officials were outside the scrutiny of American adoption laws. Hence, American laws designed to protect the welfare of adopted children did not apply to Greece’s wretched orphans.
Unbeknownst to the prosecutors and courts then, the adoptions were far from legal in Greece. In addition, facts that emerged decades later revealed that some of the babies were literally stolen from their cribs or were given up by their parents under the peddlers’ false pretexts.
In 1996, a New York Times investigation again brought these adoptions to the forefront. It was reported that some newborns were kidnapped from their hospital cribs in Greece. In some instances, parents who had twins were told that one of their newborns had died at childbirth. In reality, the infant was whisked away by kidnappers who then sold it for adoption to peddlers who worked for the U.S. black market.
In other cases, it was reported that AHEPA’s unscrupulous agents scouted Greece’s countryside and approached vulnerable widows who had many children. Touting their AHEPA credentials, the peddlers persuaded them to give up a child under the false pretext it would be raised like a king as a rich American. They planted false hopes that one day, the child would return to rescue the rest of the family out of poverty. Needless to say, the baby never returned, and under adoption secrecy laws, its whereabouts would never be traced.
When the scandal erupted in 1959, AHEPA launched a damage-control PR campaign. Its immediate response was to distance itself from the perpetrators and deny any connection with them.
AHEPA’s involvement with adoptions.
Greece was still under Nazi occupation when AHEPA first promoted the idea of bringing Greek children to the United States for adoption. An advertisement in The Ahepan Magazine in March 1944 asked readers to refer Greek infants to AHEPA’s supreme secretary, Leo J. Lamberson, to be placed for adoption in the United States. As a lawyer, Lamberson was charging legal fees for his adoption services. Where others saw tragedy in Greece, Lamberson saw an opportunity to profit, and AHEPA willingly promoted his efforts.
Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Leo Lamberson was a leading figure in AHEPA despite revelations that he had a criminal record. Eight-term supreme president V.I. Chebithes warned AHEPA’s supreme convention in 1947 that Lamberson was a recidivist, repeatedly convicted and imprisoned for felonies involving moral turpitude. He warned AHEPA that Lamberson was closely linked to a prostitution ring that trafficked young girls across state lines to a house of ill repute in Indiana. Chebithes argued that Lamberson was not morally fit to lead AHEPA in any capacity. He predicted that Lamberson would bring disgrace to the organization.
AHEPA did not heed Chebithes’ warnings. In fact, AHEPA promoted Lamberson to its highest office, that of the supreme president. It also appointed him to leading positions in its refugee and orphan adoption program.
In 1950, AHEPA sent its co-founder, George A. Polos, to set up field offices in Athens and Thessaloniki. Polos had a colorful past of his own, first as an employee of the Imperial Palace of the Ku Klux Klan, then as an organizer of AHEPA chapters under a scheme where he and his fellow recruiters kept a portion of the members’ initiation fees. In the 1930s, Polos used a similar fee-sharing arrangement to establish a network of restaurant-owner subscribers that never materialized. Now, in the year 1950, Polos used the same pattern of commission-based compensation to establish a network of “sub-agents” for AHEPA’s baby adoption program. It was an arrangement that violated both Greek and American laws since AHEPA was prohibited from charging any fees.
AHEPA also persuaded the Greek government to waive the stringent adoption rules that were designed to safeguard infants’ safety and welfare. Accordingly, Greece revised its laws to allow “proxy adoptions” that delegated to AHEPA the duty to conduct background checks of adoptive parents and follow-up visits to protect the infants’ safety and welfare. That’s a duty that AHEPA promised but did not follow up on. Indeed, it did not even have the competence to undertake such an obligation.
In Washington, AHEPA obtained certification as a State Department-authorized agent to process adoptions and refugee immigration petitions on behalf of the U.S. government. Thus, AHEPA took over the role previously played by the U.S. Embassy, the State Department, and the Justice Department.

As a certified “volunteer organization,” AHEPA was prohibited from charging fees for its work. From the start, however, AHEPA charged fees for its refugee and adoption services in Greece and the U.S. The American Embassy in Athens protested about AHEPA’s violations in 1954, but the practice continued. In February of that same year, the World Council of Churches (W.C.C.) demanded that AHEPA stop charging fees for its refugees and orphans program. AHEPA refused to comply, so the W.C.C. evicted it from the office it occupied in Athens rent-free. The W.C.C. also discontinued its $600 monthly subsidy for AHEPA’s staff wages and office expenses. AHEPA then moved to a different office and continued its money-making scheme with an unfettered appetite. These events occurred before 1956, when AHEPA did not deny its involvement with adoptions but merely argued that no wrongdoing had been alleged.
Prosecutor Frank Hogan also investigated five criminal cases that occurred before 1956. Hogan did not prosecute those five cases because they were time-barred (the statute of limitations had run out), not because no wrongdoing had been committed prior to AHEPA’s decision to dissolve its Refugee Relief Committee.
AHEPA’s adoptions continued after 1956.
AHEPA’s official historian, Alexander Kitroeff, writes that “the period of those activities that were being addressed began in late 1956, and this technically saved AHEPA more embarrassment because it had disbanded its Refugee Relief Committee that handled the arrival of children, due to concerns of financial wrongdoings.” (Kitroeff, A., History of AHEPA, © AHEPA, 2023, p. 122). The evidence, however, does not support this contention.
Although AHEPA voted to dissolve its committee in August 1956, it failed to stop the adoptions. AHEPA failed to notify the State Department, the Greek government, Greek orphanages, and the various adoption and child welfare agencies that it would no longer process adoption applications. It failed to surrender its credentials, which designated it as a volunteer agency authorized to act on behalf of the U.S. State Department. AHEPA knew that Lamberson continued to operate in its name for three years, but it never notified law enforcement agencies.
That means that in 1956, 1957, 1958, and 1959, those who handed over children to AHEPA’s designated agents justifiably believed that they were giving them to AHEPA. They reasonably relied on AHEPA’s letterhead, which was still used by the perpetrators. AHEPA never gave adequate notice to stakeholders in Greece and the United States that it ceased operations, not even when it received detailed complaints of what was happening in its name. AHEPA knew that the shady adoptions continued in its name, yet it did not stop them!
In 1957, a year after AHEPA voted to dissolve its committee, Archbishop Michael angrily protested to AHEPA that it must stop placing Greek children in non-Orthodox homes because the practice violates the children’s human rights, Greek laws, and Church teachings. AHEPA still has not been able to stop them.
At its August 1957 convention, Supreme Secretary George N. George suggested that “if the Order of AHEPA cannot clean up its name, then I feel the State Department should be called into the picture because the Order of Ahepa’s name is very vulnerable when it comes to Refugee Relief, and I feel they should be called in to complete this investigation if we’re not big enough to do it.” (1957 Supreme Convention transcript, p. 86-87). AHEPA thus knew what it had to do, but once again did not do it! Instead, it allowed its designated agents to continue hurting innocent children in AHEPA’s name.
On July 13, 1958, coincidentally the day Archbishop Michael died, the New York Greek-language daily Atlantis published a letter to the editor that protested the adoption of Greek children by non-Greeks and non-Orthodox sponsors. That letter triggered the Greek government’s interest, which in turn asked the Church of Greece to intervene. Greece’s Archbishop Theoklitos and his synod released an encyclical that condemned the practice. Once again, AHEPA was formally notified to stop the practice, but it still has not done so. It allowed the wrongful adoptions to continue in its name!
After he is elected archbishop but before his installment on April 1, 1959, Arch. Iakovos followed up with his own protests to AHEPA. Again, AHEPA did not surrender its adoption privileges and did not end its agency agreements, so the adoptions continued.
Throughout this period, from 1956 to 1959, as AHEPA received pleas to stop the harmful adoptions, it failed to stop its fraternity brothers from peddling Greek babies in AHEPA’s name. It failed to notify law enforcement that Lamberson, Scopas, and Tsaparis, were acting illegally and on their own.
AHEPA did not surrender its government credentials until 1959, long after Lamberson and Scopas were arrested. By then it was too late for hundreds of innocent children who continued to be sold in the black market.
“Brother” Michael Tsaparis, manager of AHEPA’s office in Athens, testified in 1959 that he personally sent 110 children to AHEPA through the year 1957 and an additional 165 to 170 in the two years that followed. AHEPA has nothing to say about the 110 children that were adopted before it washed its hands in 1956. It denies any involvement with the 165 to 170 children that Brother Tsaparis processed in its name afterward.
AHEPA’s loyalty to its wrongdoers.
Long after Lamberson and Scopas were arrested, AHEPA still resisted calls for their ouster from the organization. When V.I. Chebithes made a motion at the 1959 convention to expel Lamberson, he met fierce opposition from Ahepans whose masonic loyalty to their embattled leaders was beyond reproach. The future Judge Nicholas Tsoucalas argued that Lamberson “deserves a break” because the charges leveled against him are based on “suspicion and hearsay.” Leo Ypsilanti, a member of the original Displaced Persons Committee, argued that Lamberson deserves “fairness and justice” and should not be expelled without additional delays and due process. Others insisted that Lamberson could be expelled only after a trial by his own AHEPA chapter.
AHEPA rejected Chebithes’ pleas when he argued passionately that “these children don’t know anything; they can’t talk about their rights – and you talk about the right of a man to be tried by the Chapter – then I say to you, let every Greek have his right to be raised and educated in the faith and language and in the traditions of his glorious race.” (1959 Supreme Convention, p. 482).
AHEPA’s masonic oaths, secrecy, and loyalty to each other, even when they commit crimes, have caused severe harm to both itself and the Greek American community it serves. In the case of hundreds of innocent Greek children whose lives it ruined, AHEPA’s masonic culture has been abominable.
AHEPA’s missing documents.
AHEPA’s second defense is that its adoption records have gone “missing,” so it is unable to discuss the matter. The destruction or loss of its own business records is not due to the passage of time. AHEPA invoked this excuse from the start.
In October 1956, two trunks of Refugee Relief files were shipped from AHEPA’s Athens office to its Washington headquarters. Constantine Critzas, the man assigned to dissolve AHEPA’s Refugee Relief Committee, reviewed them. Known for his blind loyalty to AHEPA, Critzas had quietly extinguished other AHEPA scandals in the past, such as expelling Seraphim Canoutas from AHEPA in 1927 because he revealed the organization’s ties with the Ku Klux Klan.
In 1957, a year after he began to dissolve the Refugee Relief Committee, Critzas reported that Lamberson and his numerous “sub-agents”, in fact, continued to operate under AHEPA’s label. They refused to wrap up their activities and refused to turn over AHEPA’s own files. With that knowledge, neither Critzas nor anyone else in AHEPA sought a court order to get AHEPA’s own records from Lamberson. They did not get a court order compelling Lamberson and his “sub-agents” to cease operations. Furthermore, the two trunks of documents from the Athens office that Critzas reviewed also went “missing,” as did the adoption records in AHEPA’s other offices.
AHEPA processed adoptions from its offices in Washington, New York, Athens, Thessaloniki, and South Bend, Indiana. It also maintained “sub-agencies” in Miami, Philadelphia, Chicago, Minneapolis, Cleveland, and Middletown, Connecticut. Every adoption they handled included dossiers, applications, affidavits, court decrees, financial ledgers and correspondence. Yet no one in AHEPA knows where these records are.
AHEPA had a legal duty to maintain timely and accurate business records for its adoption activities. Under American law, if a party conceals or destroys relevant evidence, we may infer that the missing evidence is unfavorable to that party. Indeed, AHEPA had much to hide and those records would show it.

AHEPA’s know-nothing defense.
More recently, AHEPA’s leaders argue a third defense, the comical Sgt. Schultz argument, “I know nothing, nothing!” They often follow it with a pregnant pause and laughter. With a straight face, AHEPA’s current leaders argue they will not discuss the adoptions on the record because they do not have first-hand knowledge. They should not be “put on the spot” because they were not there!
Incredibly, AHEPA’s gatekeepers admonish adoptees to leave their supreme president alone because he has no first-hand knowledge. “The supreme president will not know what you are even talking about. [LAUGHTER].” (Lou Katsos, EMBCA webinar, February 25, 2024). The fallacy of this argument is obvious. By their logic, AHEPA should not celebrate its centennial because its officers were not present at its founding a hundred years ago and do not have personal knowledge of the events! See how AHEPA’s Supreme Vice President Chris Kaitson and AHEPA’s veteran Lou Katsos responded to requests by a journalist and by the leading adoptee advocates (Please go to 1:44:00)
What must AHEPA do now?
Already in their twilight years, dozens of adoptees are discovering the shady circumstances of their adoptions. Many demand easier access to their birth and adoption records. Some want to find their Greek families and meet their siblings, if they have any. By law they can reclaim their birthright, the Greek citizenship they were robbed of, but bureaucratic obstacles prevent them from doing it. At a minimum, AHEPA should help them get the justice they seek.

Most of all, every adoptee deserves AHEPA’s recognition, an acknowledgment that AHEPA did in fact carry out illegal adoptions and regrets it. AHEPA must do it because it’s the right thing to do!
Will AHEPA, the self-proclaimed “defender of Hellenism,” finally embrace its own victims?

Θα αναγνωρίσει τελικά η ΑΧΕΠΑ τα “ορφανά ελληνόπουλα” θύματα της;
Θα έχει η σημερινή ΑΧΕΠΑ την ηθική υπόσταση να συμφιλιωθεί με τα θύματά της, μετά από επτά δεκαετίες παραμέλησης; Θα έχει την διάθεση να τους βοηθήσει να ξαναποκτήσουν την ελληνική ιθαγένεια που τους αφαίρεσε και που δικαιούνται βάσει ελληνικής και διεθνούς νομοθεσίας; Θα τους βοηθήσει να ξανασμίξουν με τις οικογένειές τους στην Ελλάδα;
Τι συνέβη;

(Kitroeff, A., History of AHEPA, © AHEPA, 2023, σελ. 122).

Τι πρέπει να κάνει τώρα η ΑΧΕΠΑ;

In order for today’s AHEPA leadership to do something like that, it needs to be brave. It needs bravery to admit your old mistakes and apologise. I don’t see that bravery present in this leadership…
Thank you for writing this article and for informing everyone of this crime perpetrated against the Greek people. It is a double shame that Greeks committed this crime to their own race/nationality-but that is unfortunately the case all too often. I was not aware of this tragic story so I thank you for bringing this to light-and shame on Ahepa for continuing to lie about their past involvement-those who lie and continue to protect the organization by lying are disgusting people in my opinion.
It is quite known that Ahepa is a masonic organization and like all masonic organizations when you research what masonry is, they are satanic cults. Unlike the Orthodox church, there are no secret rituals and rites or secret passwords or secret handshakes etc.. Evil is always in darkness away from the light. Satan conducts his business in secret and in darkness. Christianity works in the light not in secret. Unfortunately many are fooled by ahepa and other masonic organizations because these organizations do a few good deeds but only as a front to fool people into thinking they are just a philanthropic organization and there is nothing sinister about them, however this is wrong. People in the Orthodox church also like to say, “oh Ahepa is different from the masons, they’re not masons-this is not true. Ahepa does their own masonic funeral services for brother ahepans who have died, they have secret rituals, secret handshakes, and on and on. Anyone in these organizations needs to quit and repent otherwise you will not be accepted into the kingdom of God.
John,
The biggest crime of AHEPA in my opinion, is that they took these Greek orphans and gave them mostly to Jewish families, stripping them from their Greek Orthodox identity. And they did that with the help of Greek authorities. The same people that were accusing the communists for «Παιδομάζωμα», they were selling orphan babies to the US!
John .. as a former President of an Ahepa Chapter, I agree with you 100%! However , I go further than just having them resign from a “declared Secret Society” which is endorsed disgracefully by a leader of the Greek Orthodox Church of America! On Ahepa day .. these ” Secret Service ” representatives of the Free Masons and State Department will march to the “Altars of our churches” with their shackles of lie, and be blessed as Servant of God and Country by the Clergy of our churches!
There are only two acknowledged legitimate affiliates of the Greek Orthodox Church…The PTO AND The PHILOPTOHOS ! The Ahepa is not!
There should be only “PTO AND PHILOPTOHOS DAY” represent the interest of our Greek Orthodox Community and our Church ! Every Member of the Ahepa ..should be banned from being on our Church Boards , which they do, to be a clearing house for Ahepa activities in our Churches, They should have no Access to our church facilities for their meeting and staged fraudulent activities! If they wish to be on any Church Board ..they should renounce their affiliation with the Ahepa! The only purpose of Ahepa ..is to allow Epidophoros and Political figures of America and Greece to fraudulently make these frauds as the illegitimate voice of all Greeks Americans, in order to justify their Criminal policies which don’t help Greeks of Greece, Cyprus or America, but only benefit their American and Israeli ..lobbies!
While the word “Secret” and Secret Societies are not repugnant to Epidorphoros and even endorses it, just like he does the “Secret Societies” who run the U.S government, .. another leader of America ..John F. Kennedy ..President of the United States in 1961 tell us all why we should dismiss the Ahepa and dismantle it !
“The very word “secrecy” is repugnant in a free and open society; and we are as a people inherently and historically opposed to secret societies, to secret oaths and to secret proceedings. We decided long ago that the dangers of excessive and unwarranted concealment of pertinent facts far outweighed the dangers which are cited to justify it. Even today, there is little value in opposing the threat of a closed society by imitating its arbitrary restrictions. Even today, there is little value in insuring the survival of our nation if our traditions do not survive with it. And there is very grave danger that an announced need for increased security will be seized upon by those anxious to expand its meaning to the very limits of official censorship and concealment. That I do not intend to permit to the extent that it is in my control. And no official of my Administration, whether his rank is high or low, civilian or military, should interpret my words here tonight as an excuse to censor the news, to stifle dissent, to cover up our mistakes or to withhold from the press and the public the facts they deserve to know.
John .. you don’t know just how right you are … the only thing is that you left out , is for all the Public Officials of the U.S .Government to resign from this Secret Society to save themselves!
Michael,
You said it all with this frase:
“…in order to justify their Criminal policies which don’t help Greeks of Greece, Cyprus or America, but only benefit their American and Israeli ..lobbies”
And the proof of this is the silence of AHEPA about the Prespes agreement. They swallowed the treason of Macedonia, in order to benefit US and NATO. They put their interests over Greek interest…
Since I was mentioned by name in this article it’s only appropriate to respond to an intellectually dishonest paragraph in my opinion by the author of this article who has cherry picked what he liked to suit his narrative when mentioning myself and Chris. I am not a gatekeeper for AHEPA or an appointment secretary for its officers on the adoptee issue nor a “veteran” or spokesperson for AHEPA but rather a known advocate for the Hellenic adoptees and why I moderated this panel as well as others, and have spoken numerous times publicly on the topic. I asked Chris Kaitson to be on the panel not because he was AHEPA’s Supreme Vice President to speak on behalf of AHEPA but rather related to the fact that he was one of the Hellenic adoptees. The paragraphs where Chris and I are mentioned is the “fallacy” as well as the author not understanding and basically clueless in my opinion by not comprehending nor researching that the leading adoptee advocates on the panel are not only friends of mine but we have collaborated over the years to promote and advocate for the Hellenic adoptees in various ways and levels and which included this panel discussion. I suggest to the audience to listen to the whole over 2 hour discussion to understand the context of my statements, and statements made including the one quoted which was and is my belief and not a diversion on the topic.
Also for those interested on the very important topic on the Hellenic adoptee issue I suggest listening to other panel discussions I have moderated on the topic like “Voices of the Lost Children of Greece” : Oral Histories of Cold War International Adoptions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRze0EKoiZA) or “Unfinished Business: Postwar Greek Adoption History and Current Adoptee Activism” (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSpc_5nPEtE) or “Hellenic Orphans Taken Abroad from 1821 through the 1960’s”(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tRehFrxb_Ms) as examples.
In addition for those who have not signed the Nostos For Greek Born Adoptees Petition which currently has about 75,000 signatures please do so with this link- https://chng.it/zYBQD4K8jf .
For those interested in real research on the Hellenic adoptees issue including AHEPA‘s role I suggest Professor Gonda Van Steen’s book “Adoption, Memory, and Cold War Greece: Kid pro quo? (2019)”.
Lou Katsos
Doctor Katsos, I don’t think you want to turn this into a discussion about intellectual dishonesty. (I still have your videos on Seraphim Canoutas…) Out of respect to the adoptees, there should be no ad hominem attacks in our discussion.
I defy you to dispute any of my research findings on AHEPA’s history, in this article or in any of my other works. It does not contradict any of Dr. Van Steen’s or Dr. Cardaras’ pioneer work in this field. It merely complements it by shining more light on AHEPA’s history. As with all my publications, every statement I make is supported by indisputable research evidence.
Dr. Honda Van Steen and Dr. Mary Cardaras have indeed done an incredible job researching the subject. Their books are must-reads for everyone in the U.S. and Greece. Their advocacy for the adoptees is commendable and should be supported by all of us.
But, sir, why do you beseech your panelists to stop asking further questions? Why are you telling us that the research must end with Dr. Van Steen’s book? Why are you deflecting attention to other “Hellenic American organizations” that you “will not name” to right this wrong? Are you implying other Greek American organizations did what AHEPA did? Isn’t that disingenuous and misleading? Maybe dishonest?
Savas, Basil, Nick and Kaitson do not need you as their messenger. They know what they have to do. Their personal knowledge or ignorance is immaterial. They lead an organization of 16,000 members and it’s their members’ dignity that is at stake.
They must do the right thing. Not as an Ahepan. Not as a Greek. But as a human being.
There seem to be plenty of other similar online articles written in the past as well (possibly where much of this material was sourced from, including references to some names):

In contrast, AHEPA’s website doesn’t acknowledge involvement in mediating child adoptions after the Greek civil war..
https://ahepahistory.org/History-of-the-Order-of-AHEPA-1922-1972-George-Leber/part-II-chapter-one-the-history-of-immigration-to-america.html
The one question that nobody seems to be asking is the following, (separate from whether or not these individuals seeking their roots end up with Greek citizenship one day)…
If AHEPA was truly involved in facilitating such “child adoptions” in the 1950, and if claims about AHEPA are accurate that it is historically a foundation that promoted the interests of Hellenes and Hellenism in the United States, then someone should explain nowadays why exactly wasn’t it ALSO in the interest of the young Hellenic children to ensure that they ONLY be adopted by Orthodox families, but rather so many of them appear to have been “spiritually sacrificed” and raised in other denominations, even though many of these children were already likely baptized Orthodox? What is the spiritual benefit of such an adoption (per the scriptural quote about “gaining the world but damaging your soul”)?
That is a very bad, tragic outcome that needs to be highlighted and examined a bit more from a historical perspective (almost reminiscent of the Janissary movement where Greek children were “taken” and raised to be “non-Greek”)… Many of us were asking the same question in more recent memory with the wave of adoptions out of Russia that peaked in the 1990s, and to which the Russian government curtailed at some point. I’m willing to bet that a lot of the Russian babies adopted back in the 1990s by American parents actually support Zelensky today…
Greek citizenship is one thing for these people, but Orthodox “citizenship” should have been protected back in the 1950s, at a minimum by both AHEPA and the Archdiocese, and it appears from the articles above that in the cases where non-Orthodox parents adopted these children, it was not a major priority…why not?
Interestingly enough, in the course of my eight decades, I met two of these adoptees (through fellow Greeks.) These adoptees were adopted by reformed Jewish families; these reformed Jewish families actually told them they were “Greek” and offered them the option of bar’/bat’ mitzvahs. All over the five boroughs and NY Metropolitan’ areas, I believe a great number were indeed adopted by Jewish families. With the advent of technology, (Ancestry 23, etc…) they may be discovering their DNA.
It’s not that easy Larissa, because Ancestry is not a thing in Greece! They can find their relatives around the world, but not the ones in Greece…
