EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis): Yiannis Smaragdis is the director of many excellent movies about historical personalities, such as “El Greco” and “Kazantzakis.” (If you have not seen them, I strongly recommend them. They are excellent, and they come with English subtitles!)  He has proclaimed that the movie on the Revolution leader and first Governor of Greece, Ioannis Kapodistrias, will be the last of his career! One last thing: It is now being filmed and will be first shown in New York’s MOMA theater early next year!! It will definitely be the year’s cultural event for the Greek community…

The sin of Kapodistrias

The humiliated Greek state, whοse Ministry of Culture, finances the last abomination of every fool, closed the door on Yiannis Smaragdis and his film about the country’s first governor, Kapodistrias…

By Manolis Kottakis (estianews.gr – newsbreak.gr)

Hellenism remembers the Fall of Constantinople tomorrow—the fall of the millennial Byzantine Empire. However, things are happening in our country that convince us that alienation is now happening within us—that he has moved to our territory—as a loss of sense, identity, and dignity.

The day before yesterday, I was watching the umpteenth cry of anguish broadcast by director Yiannis Smaragdis, who has been trying since 2021 to raise the funds required for the filming of a film dedicated to the first governor of the Greek state, Ioannis Kapodistrias, on ERT’s midnight show. In his life and work. The ridiculous Greek state, which, as the Ministry of Culture, finances the last abomination of every fool, unfortunately, designed to give even one euro for the ambitious project of Smaragdis.

But also, the benefactors who secretly approached Smaragdis to help him are receiving threats from… glorified traitors that, if they do so and think to help him, they will be labeled… Russophiles, and will have problems with their businesses! It’s obvious what’s going on. Some are afraid. They are very afraid that it might become known to the masses which patrons gave the order to kill Kapodistrias. For, as will be revealed, this mandate is the consistent pattern that has prevailed for all our independent political leaders throughout our free lives. For 203 whole years! The traitors who betray Greece are constantly crowned and promoted, while the free spirits who love Greece are constantly hunted.

Kapodistrias was not a Russophile. He made the Constitution of Switzerland; he creatively influenced the political life of France, and he made it clear to the Russian Czar what he would do if the Greek national interests collided with the Russian ones. He will defend the former. Kapodistrias’ sin is that he was a freedom lover and patriotic. He was not a given. And non-givens are forbidden to become role models for the younger generation through the big screen. Dangerous! The times call for obedient leaders who carry out the orders of foreign centers without asking too much!

Smaragdis, in a controlled outburst of anger, said in this interview “even if they kill me, I have found the one who will make the film!” Which even if it is filmed, there is no doubt it will face a problem with its distribution in the cinemas of well-known multinationals. However, above all, I consider the case of the film about Kapodistrias a scandal of national shame. Suppose a distinguished director cannot make a film about the first governor of his country, and he and his financiers receive threats from wretched scumbags. Can we talk about freedom and democracy in Greece today? Can we talk about freedom of artistic expression? The answer is no.

Freedom of art in the 21st century in Greece is to rag the flag, paint it pink, burn it, and, when you are arrested, acquit yourself in Autoforos. Freedom of art is to desecrate the cross with impunity. Art in the Greece of this government is anything against the motherland. Anything in favor of the country is not considered art. That is why I have no hope for Kapodistrias in this administration. Giannis is in vain. The movie will be made. When God wills it. Now, with them, no. Today we have a loss.

Του Μανώλη Κωττάκη – (estianews.gr – newsbreak.gr)

  1. I for one am proud to be a Russophile. I have a Russian flag with Greek and American flags. Russia alone among the great powers never interfered in Greece’s internal affairs. Russia in recent years stopped the genocide of Christians in Syria.

Russia is fighting the Neo Nazis in Ukraine. The west hates Russia to such an extent they will support and arm admirers of Hitler.

I am surprised no one brings up that after the establishment of independent Greece, Russia and the Ecumenical Patriarchate were close. Russia supported Constantinople’s Patriarchate politically and financially. The British and the Germans created the Church of Greece as autocephalous to curb Russian spiritual ties with Greeks.

Russia opposed carving up the Church of
Constantinople. Very ironic that Patriarch Bartholomew is working to carve up the Russian Church the same way the western powers took Greece from Constantinople.

Do the phanariots and Russophobes in Greece not remember this history? I am also a Trump supporter for many reasons. The major reason is that Trump
Respects Russia and wants good relations with Russia. There would be no war if Trump were still in the White House.

And the war and anti Russian hysteria has benefitted Turkey.

    • Theodoros.
Russia has helped Greece in the past. No question, that the Russo-Turkish war of 1827 is what gave a breather to the almost defeated Greeks, who were fighting each other more than the Turks. The draw of Turkish troops from Sterea Ellas, to the Russian front gave the chance to Kapodistrias to claim more of Rumeli, by sending Ypsilantis to clear the area. And after the defeat of the Turks, with the Russians stopping at Adrianople, a few hundred miles from Konstantinople, gave the opportunity to Russia to demand the complete independence of Greece, instead of having to pay an annual tax to the Sultan.

However, many of your assertions are not based on fact. The Ukrainians were known to be friendly to the Nazis, but it was because they saw them as liberators from the Russians. But, that’s 80 years in the past. You can’t call them nazis, any more than you can call Russians “commies” because of their communist past.

The West doesn’t “hate” Russia. There are rivalries, but countries are not middle school rivals. They have co operated in the past, especially in WWII. Russia, being such a huge nation, albeit poor but resource rich, throws her weight around, because she can. Russian people would rather be Westerners, and Europeans, since Peter the Great. They’ve always admired, envied and looked up to the West. Putin has different ideas.

Patriarch Bartholomeu is not working to carve up the Russian church. He does not have the power to do such a thing, even if he wanted to. And being so sure that “there would not have been a war” if Trump was president is speculation, based on wishful thinking. No one knows what would have happened. Its easy to make statements which can not be proven. As for the war and anti-Russian hysteria benefitting Turkey is correct. But, who started the war by invading Ukraine? It was Russia. Or rather Putin. Because he’s a dictator, that has been in power and wants to remain in power, by telling his people that the West is after Russia and he’s the only one who can save them. As all dictators dol

      • Lambros you started drifting in the wrong direction again… When tge Wrst cancels Russian music and ballet, it is Russophobia – and I could mention one hundred examples. Bartholomew has caused schism in Orthodoxy because he acted as a tool of the State Dept. By giving “cacocephaly” to Ukraine he cause deep rifts in many Churches like Greece and Cyprus where half the Metropolitan refuse to recognize Epiphanios. Putin is an authoritarian but he is also a great leader. This is not simply my opinion based on the facts I observe, but the opinion of the most educated Greek of the last 50 years, Sir Basil Markesinis. Bartholomew is a miserable human being unworthy of being a simple priest, not a Patriarch. His lack of theological knowledge matches only that of Elpidophoros. And his character matches that of the pimps at Bosporus shores where he used to hang out at a younger age.

      • There are additional instances when Russia has helped Greece. Catherine the Great’s armies defeated the Turks in 1774 after the battle of Kachuk Kamari which helped Orthodox in the Ottoman Empire.
Also, the Russians vetoed the American and British backed Annan Plan at the UN Security Council.

On Ukraine. It has been well established Neo Nazis are in the Azov Batallions in Ukraine. Neo Nazis serve as Zelensky’s bodyguards and sport Nazi symbol tattoos.

Google Yaroslav Hunka. Ninety eight year old Ukrainian Nazi war criminal honored by the Canadian Parliament last fall in the presence of Zelensky.

This incident shows how stupid western officials are. This Nazi was introduced as a world war 2 vet who fought against the Russians. Everyone except western officials that those who fought against the Russians in WW2 were fighting for Hitler.

People who do not know the sides in Ww2 aware formulating policies that started a war with Russia.

In addition, notorious Nazi collaborator Stefan Banderas is honored as a hero by Ukrainian officials including Zelensky.

Patriarch Bartholomew colluded with the US to to recognize the defrocked and never ordained bishops of the OCU. This a reversal of policy by the Patriarch still without formal explanation.

Ukraine is the canonical territory of the Russian Orthodox Church and has been since 1686. Granting autocephaly to fake bishops is in fact an effort to remove Ukraine from the Russian Church. Thankfully, this has not succeeded as the canonical Church remains under Moscow.
