EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis).  An earthquake hit Europe as the EU Parliament elections brought a massive defeat for Emanuel Macron by Marine Lepen and German Chancellor Olf Solz. “Little Napoleon” Emmanuel Macron was forced to call for early French Parliamentary Elections immediately!  The rise of the patriotic/populist right-wing parties has tremendous significance in Europe and globally. Here are the most serious effects of yesterday’s EU parliament elections:

  • Although the Parliament itself does not hold significant power (it shares legislative rights with the EU Commission), the people have spoken, and they have rejected the EU bureaucratic elites, known for their corruption by big corporations and other foreign interests. The people’s voice was heard throughout Europe: We want change in Brussels.
  • This was a clear anti-war vote in the main EU countries, especially in France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, etc. There is no doubt at all about it: the right-wing parties opposed involvement in Ukraine, and some of them showed their preference for normalizing relations with Russia, even some pro-Russia sentiments.
  • After this vote, one has to assume that pursuing the same policy in Ukraine would be nearly impossible.
  • By the same token, the people of Europe have identified illegal migration from predominantly Muslim countries as the main existential threat. The coming elections in France, where the party of Marine Le Pen received double (!!) the votes of Emmanuel Macron’s party will be decisive.  If Le Pen wins, you can expect an immediate reversal of European immigration policies.  This will be a huge defeat for the Globalists!!
  • Similarly, this right-wing tsunami will have a huge effect on “green policies,” especially in agriculture and in issues related to “gender identity”: The liberal extremists in these issues have been rejected.

Far-right surges in EU vote, topping polls in Germany, France, Austria

French President Emmanuel Macron calls snap election after National Rally doubles vote share of centrist Renaissance.

Far-right parties have made significant gains in the European Union parliamentary elections, delivering humiliating defeats to the parties of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer.

While mainstream parties kept control of the 705-member European Parliament on Sunday, the 27-member bloc swung palpably to the right in a sign of the durability of anti-establishment sentiment on the continent.

In France, Marine Le Pen’s National Rally delivered such a crushing defeat to Macron’s centrist Renaissance that the French leader called snap legislative elections, a risky manoeuvre which could inflict further losses on his party and hobble the remaining three years of his presidential term.

National Rally was projected to win about 33 percent of the vote and 31 seats in the incoming European Parliament – more than double the tally of the Macron ticket’s 15 percent.

“We’re ready to turn the country around, ready to defend the interests of the French, ready to put an end to mass immigration,” Le Pen said.

Macron acknowledged the scale of the defeat.

“I’ve heard your message, your concerns, and I won’t leave them unanswered … France needs a clear majority to act in serenity and harmony,” Macron said, adding that calling a snap election demonstrated his commitment to democratic ideals.

In Germany, the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) took second place, underscoring the party’s strength ahead of next year’s federal election.

The Eurosceptic party was projected to secure more than 16 percent of the vote, its best-ever showing and a higher share of the tally than all three parties in Scholz’s coalition.

The conservative alliance of the Christian Democratic Union and the Christian Social Union, which are in opposition at the federal level, topped the poll with about 30 percent of the vote.

Germany’s Greens were the biggest losers on Sunday, falling by 8.5 percentage points to 12 percent, punished by voters for the cost of policies to reduce CO2 emissions – in line with expectations for environmental parties across Europe.

Scholz’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the third coalition partner, the pro-business Free Democratic Party (FDP), were projected to win about 14 percent and 5 percent of the vote, respectively, down from 15.8 percent and 5.4 percent in the previous election.

The AfD’s strong showing comes as Germany’s party landscape undergoes its biggest upheaval in decades, with new populist parties competing to fill the vacuum left by the decline of mainstream parties that dominated the post-reunification era.

The shift looks set to make it much harder for established parties to form viable coalitions and has been blamed for a coarsening of the political climate, including instances of violence against politicians and activists.

The AfD’s gains come despite a series of scandals and controversies, including their lead candidate declaring that the SS, the Nazis’ main paramilitary force, were “not all criminals”.

“We’ve done well because people have become more anti-European,” the AfD’s co-leader Alice Weidel said on Sunday.

“People are annoyed by so much bureaucracy from Brussels,” she added, giving a plan ultimately to ban CO2-emitting cars as an example.

In Austria, the far-right Freedom Party gained nearly 26 percent of the vote, topping a nationwide ballot for the first time.

The governing conservative People’s Party (OeVP) picked up more than 24 percent of the vote, followed by the Social Democrats with about 23 percent and the Greens at nearly 11.

Chancellor Nehammer pledged to address voters’ concerns ahead of national elections, due later in the year, including cracking down on undocumented migration.

Meanwhile, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni saw her position bolstered after her right-wing populist Brothers of Italy more than doubled its seats in parliament.

The far right also performed well in the Netherlands, with Geert Wilders’s anti-immigration Party for Freedom projected to win six seats, just two seats shy of the total picked up by centre-left and green parties.

Left-wing and green parties had a better showing in the Scandinavian countries, with far-right and populist parties in Sweden, Denmark and Finland seeing their vote shares decline.

In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s nationalist Fidesz won the most votes but lost significant ground compared with the 2019 elections.

Fidesz had 44 percent of the vote with nearly 90 percent of votes counted, down from 52 percent.

Still, Orban claimed victory in a speech to supporters at a party event on Sunday night.

“Today, we defeated the old opposition, the new opposition, and no matter what the opposition will be called the next time, we will defeat them again and again,” he said.

Orban’s main challenger, Peter Magyar’s Tisza party, picked up about 30 percent of the vote.

Overall, mainstream and pro-European groups remained the dominant forces, with centre-right and centre-left parties on track to secure a slimmed-down majority in the 705-member parliament.

The European People’s Party (EPP) was on track to be the biggest grouping with a projected 189 deputies, bolstered by centre-right victories in Spain and Poland, followed by the centre-left Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats with 135 seats.

The European Conservatives and Reformists group, which includes the Brothers of Italy, was projected to win 72 seats, followed by the far-right Identity and Democracy with 58.

Green and liberal, pro-European parties suffered the heaviest losses, with Greens-European Free Alliance and Renew Europe losing more than 40 seats.

von der Leyen

Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Commission, said the results showed that the “centre is holding”.

“We won the European elections. This election has given us two messages,” von der Leyen said.

“First, there remains a majority in the centre for a strong Europe, and that is crucial for stability. In other words, the centre is holding. But it is also true that the extremes on the left and on the right have gained support, and this is why the result comes with great responsibility for the parties in the centre.”

Reporting from Berlin, Al Jazeera’s Step Vaessen said Eurosceptic parties would form a large bloc in the next parliament.

“With this very large bloc of far-right parties, there can be an influence on climate policies, for example … Also, [the EU’s] agriculture policies… and migration policies, which is a very important issue here in Germany and in the Netherlands,” she said.

However, Vaessen noted that the far-right parties are not united.

“They have a lot of divisions among themselves and they have been trying to reach out to each other. We’ve seen [France’s] Marine Le Pen, for example, reaching out to Giorgia Meloni in Italy,” she said.

“But after tonight, we will have to see how these groups will be formed and what kind of influence they will have.”

  2. I agree that Europe and Greece in particular should have strong borders and stop the Moslem invasion of the West. The problem with that is that there’s a huge need for workers, even in Greece, where unemployment has been high in all its history. The choice is either import African Christians, which is seen just as bad, Moslems, whom no one wants, increase the birth rate, which is not happening or go without carers for old people, nurses, cleaners, agriculture workers and the rest. Or the economy will collapse. So, what’s the choice.

As for the rest, LGBTQ is now widely accepted in Europe. Europeans, other than older people are no longer Christian and don’t care who sins. So, that’s not the reason for the right wing to gain. Woke idealogy is not an issue in Europe and it makes no sense anywhere. Green energy needs to be developed. Its not only good for the environment, but good for lessening dependence on The Saudis and Iran. As for Russia, the West is not in war against them. Russia declared war on a UN recognized country. The West is helping them. That’s a good thing. If we, as Greeks accept aggression by a bigger neighbor, then, we can’t complain if Greece and Cyprus also face aggression from a big neighbor. Think about that Leonidas. The voters don’t consider long-term impact of what they want

    • I have said many times that the corrupt political elites of Greece could have EASILY solved the demographic problem in the 1990s by allowing Orthodox people from the Balkans and also Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and other Orthodox countries to live and work in Greece. These people are highly compatible and in JUST ONE GENERATION they could assimilate. Instead they allowed only Albanians who also assimilated but brought problems with them which we see now. They still have the opportunity to do so – but it is now much more difficult. And the globalist elites want Greece to disintegrate not to unify. If they wanted Greece to prosper, the elites would have explored the massive oil and gas deposited of the Greek Seas and land decades ago.
You keep deluding yourself about Russia and the invasion of Ukraine -WHICH WAS TOTALLY PROVOKED by the west and this is so thoroughly proved that needs no more discussion. If you or anyone else keeps pushing this disinformation here I promise you that your comment will be thrown in the trash. Here we discuss factual information and not deep state propaganda.

    • A huge need for workers does not mean that migrant workers can or should bring their families with them, and put them into Greek schools for free. That’s precisely what the government allowed in the mid-1990s (it was not like that the first few years of the migrations), and that was totally intentional. Albania is only a few hours drive away…it’s not a big deal to bring seasonal workers, let them earn some money, and allow them to return on the bus. However, it was never about that. It was always about a long term agenda to dilute Greek culture, society, and tradition. Schools that ended up with large influx of foreign students had very low quality education, because they had to “slow down” the entire class so that “no migrant child was left behind”…such stories abound on the internet for anyone to research about the details between 1994 and 2010..

I am the last generation that recalls how farm work was done before the Albanian farm laborers came in…it was barter labor from within the farming community, much like the Amish do the “barn raisings” that you can witness on youtube. However, anyone that hasn’t “damaged their manicure” in the fields wouldn’t know or remember something like this…

Greek citizens will never prosper as long as they continue to tolerate corrupt politicians, and as long as they continue to “feed at the election trough” every 4 years, like a herd of “two-legged cattle”. 50 years of “democracy” and subsequent “ravaging” by greedy, corrupt politicians and “elite” who never cared about Greece or the Greek people has resulted a total enslavement of Greece.

Οι ανθρωποι θα καταντησουν φτωχοι, γιατι θα γινουν τεμπεληδες… – St. Kosmas Aitolos

  3. Another opportunity that Greece lost was to take in the Syrian Christians when they were fleeing the civil war. They are Orthodox and look like us. But who wanted to stay in Greece, especially in 2015, during the crisis. They all wanted Germany. Ukrainians are about 25,000 currently in Greece. And Mitsotakis invited them in, when the war broke out. We got a few thousand, but not enough to make a difference.
But Georgians, Romanians and Albanians included many criminals. So many elderly residents of villages in Greece were murdered for the money they were hiding. Many Albanians have left for Germany after they got their Greek papers.

Nick, I dont think there are any globalist elite that want Greece to disintegrate or to prosper. Greece is just another minnow of a country to them. EXXON and the other big oil would explore for minerals in a minute, if they were sure there would be return for their investment in exploration. Who would stop them? And why turn down Greece’s deposits?
As for the Ukraine war, I understand that we have different opinions. However, I can assure you that I dont have access to deep state propaganda. Why would anyone give me access to deep state propaganda? I only watch NBC, CBS, ABC news. And read NYTIMES and the economist. And I have a critical mind. Its obvious that Russia took Crimea and then invaded Ukraine. Ukraine didn’t invade Russia. As for provoking Russia, there might be some merit to that. But I consider it as normal antagonism between countries. As it is now happening with China. Countries always had adversaries. Democracies don’t go to war against each other, even where there is antagonism. Only strongman attack first. Look at America being anti-Japanese in the 80’s, because they were flooding America with cars and they called them Japan inc. It didn’t result in war.

    • Lambros, I will do this for the last time:
      – NBC, ABC, CBS and NYTIMES, all these along with CNN and MSNBC ARE deep state propaganda.
      – The fact that Russia “invaded” and occupied Crimea – where she operated her main naval base in Simferopol for 250 continuous years – PROVES that the nature of Russian operatiosns. You mean to tell me that Russia invaded the area surrounding her main naval base? What is wrong here? Are you out of your mind? Or Russia was supposed to lose to the West the equivalent of Norfolk Virginia, her main naval base? What is wrong with you people? How single-minded can you be?
      – As for the Eastern Ukraine special military operation by the Russian Armed Forces, Chancellor Angela Merkel said it best: “We fooled Russia. The Minsk Agreements were supposed to buy time for us to arm Ukraine.
Lambros I do not have time for more. You have to do your homework: Professor Mearsheimer, http://www.theduran.com, Col Douglas McGregor, Tucker Carlson. Start with those and when you come up to speed we will talk.

      • Nick.
One of Meirsheimer’s arguments is that the West provoked Russia by extending NATO and the EU to her borders and compared it to China, taking Canada and Mexico on her side, in a military alliance against America.

        • Lambros I am not going to post all your comment because you are making one mistake after the other. You cannot bring yourself up to speed on these issues just spending a few minutes. This is a huge geopolitical issue. Your biggest mistake of all is when you state that NATO offered Russia to become a member. THE OPPOSITE IS TRUE: Russia asked to join and America SAID NO….
Keep studying. In a few weeks you will do much better.
