EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis).  Cretan Villagers in Kaloudiana (Kissamos, Chania) decided to roast a whole bull on a spit, as you see in our photos, to celebrate the Pentecost – apparently, it is associated with the local church.  But all the “animal lovers” rose against them for the “inhumane” treatment of the animal…

The villagers are out of their minds.  They reply: 1) If we had asked the butcher to turn the bull into steaks and put them on the grill, nobody would say a pip!! 2) What are these “animal lovers” going to do next? Are they going to ask the Greeks to cancel one of their most time-honored traditions, the roasted lamb on a spit, for Easter?  Unbelievable!…

As someone who has visited Crete a few times and has studied its history, I suspect that there is something deeper in this story. In Minoan Crete (3-5,000+ yrs ago), the bull/taurus was celebrated in many ways – we all know the myth of the man-eating Minotaur who was fed humans.  As a matter of fact, the late Archaeology Professor Yiannis Sakellarakis (founder of the Heraklion Museum, ranking in the top five globally), who I had the honor to meet, proved that we had human sacrifices in Crete.

The bull was part of everyday life, and in Crete, you have the first images of bull riding/taming.  There is also some evidence of bulls being sacrificed.  There is a lot more more than meets the eye in this story!  One thing is for sure: The bull is central to Crete’s history. It is celebrated, worshipped, ridden/tamed, and sacrificed, and God knows what else. Animal lovers should learn to respect the history of a place; in this case, it is obviously inscribed in the hearts of its people.

Uproar with the spitting of a bull in Kissamos for the celebration of the Holy Spirit!

The feast organized in Kissamos of Chania on the occasion of the feast of the Holy Spirit has caused disgust and strong reactions.

In particular, yesterday, Sunday, the Cultural Association of Kaloudians organized an event in which it was offered as a bond… a bull!

Those in charge decided to proceed with incredible brutality and kill a bull which they put on a spit and roast!

Naturally, there was an uproar from several citizens as well as animal welfare organizations. However, it did not “sweat” the ear of the organizers who held the celebration and the spitting!

See photo of the bull at the time of the skewering:

“Joys and festivities there in Kaloudiana Kissamos

To celebrate the Holy Spirit, this great celebration of orthodoxy, they will set up dance and music around a skewered bull, faithful to pagan “customs” considering that they “promote civilization”. They are so proud of it, that they mention it on their poster, as a pole of attraction. After all, isn’t Holy Easter also accompanied by the slaughter of lambs and their spitting in the majority of the territory? And then we talk about ethics and empathy… Love each other!”.

  1. Boy, sorry I missed it! Xronia Polla. May the Holy Spirit continue to guide and protect all the people, including the faithful….🕊

  2. It would be interesting to see what happens if any animal rights activist dares to approach a group of Cretans with the intent of threatening their “barbecue in progress”…my bet is that the activists would likely be eating meat (willingly or not) by the end of that “conversation”… :)
