In His First Liturgy, Patriarch Daniel Did Not Commemorate Epiphanios Of Ukraine

EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis).  The fallout from the surprising win of Met. Daniel of Vidin, who shocked the establishment of the Patriarchate and the State Department by becoming patriarch of Bulgaria, continues.  Helleniscope, who days in advance warned our readers about the distinct possibility, was not surprised: the polls from Bulgaria showed the same thing we witnessed this month throughout Europe and the World: A sharp and deep turn to the right towards traditional values.  The Church of Bulgaria was bound to follow its people.  The delegates said a LOUD NO to accepting homosexuality and to unity with the Papists, violating all Orthodox traditions and Canons…

In the first of the three posts below, from a Bulgarian website, we learn that Bartholomew did not appear, as he had originally planned, in the first liturgy of the new Patriarch.  He expected that Met. Gregoriy would win – and he was surprised!!  But he also skipped the official dinner after the enthronement, and he headed back to Constantinople!… Then, during this first liturgy, the new Patriarch Daniel did not commemorate the Met. of Ukraine Epiphanios!!  We also learned that Epiphanios sent Daniel a congratulatory letter saying that “the previous Patriarch Neophytos condemned the Russians for invading Ukraine, we hope you should do the same.”… We do not know yet if Daniel will respond to Epihanios… Helleniscope has said for two years that his final title will be “Epiphanios of No Ukraine.”… We are coming close to this historic moment…

Bartholomew escaped from the common liturgy with the newly elected Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil

Bartholomew escaped from the common liturgy with the newly elected Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil

The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew did not appear at the solemn Holy Liturgy in the Patriarchal Cathedral “St. Alexander Nevsky”, which was celebrated this morning by the newly elected Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil. According to the program, the two were supposed to serve together with metropolitans from the Holy Synod. Bartholomew arrived in Sofia yesterday at the invitation of Metropolitan Grigoriy, who was the head of the Holy Synod until the election of a new spiritual leader and one of the candidates for him. The clergy and the choir of the patriarchal cathedral were informed in advance that the solemn service on the day after the election would be led by the newly elected Bulgarian patriarch in collaboration with the Ecumenical Bartholomew. However, this did not happen.

This morning the Ecumenical Patriarch did not come to the temple, but sent his representatives to participate in the service. According to “Voices” sources, Bartholomew did not go to the ceremonial dinner last night in honor of the newly elected patriarch, but flew to Istanbul.

According to our sources, this is another proof of the preliminary scenario of the circle around the Metropolitan of Plovdiv Nikolay, who envisioned someone else occupying the patriarchal throne. After the surprising election of Metropolitan Daniil of Vidin, the Ecumenical Patriarch was disappointed and hastened to leave. In the last few years, Metropolitan Daniil has openly criticized the Patriarchate of Constantinople for its uncanonical actions in support of the schismatics in Ukraine and even recognized the so-called Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which is not recognized by other Orthodox churches.

In ministry with the metropolitans of the BOC, the new patriarch celebrated his first Holy Liturgy. He pointed out that the Church means unity.

“The tasks are many, because the head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church (BOC) is a figure, a person who should embody the unity of the Holy Synod, the BOC and the people. Because the vocation of the church is precisely to bring together those who are divided. Church means unity and the very name of the church tells us about this unity – a people who are called by God to be together with him and to be united in love”, the newly elected Bulgarian Patriarch Daniil told journalists before celebrating his first holy liturgy as the first hierarch today and head of the BOC-BP in the Patriarchal Cathedral “St. Alexander Nevsky”.

“Today is a significant day, in which the return of the relics of St. Ivan of Rila to the Rila Holy Monastery in 1469 is celebrated,” said Patriarch Daniil, noting that the Rila Monastery was the first Bulgarian national institution to be revived after the fall of Bulgaria under Turkish slavery and the place of St. Ivan Rilski among our ancestors is exceptional. This is clearly shown both in his life and in the entire history of the saint after he left this world, emphasized His Holiness.

It is significant how everything and through such vicissitudes that have passed through our country and that the Rila holy monastery has endured, it is always restored and the support of the saint and his patronage are very clearly visible. Indeed, St. Ivan Rilski is a pan-Bulgarian patron who, on the one hand, intercedes before God’s throne for all of us, and on the other hand, shows us what the path is for all of us, said Patriarch Daniil, when asked by journalists what his address to the faithful before his first patriarchal holy liturgy.

Today’s service was honored with their presence by representatives of local Orthodox churches, as well as the Catholic – the Pope was represented by his perfect H.V. Cardinal Kurt Koch. President Georgi Parvanov, Russian ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova and dozens of believers were also part of the first liturgy of our new patriarch.

Metropolitan Daniil of Vidin was elected yesterday as Bulgarian Patriarch and Metropolitan of Sofia by the delegates of the Patriarchal Electoral Church Council.

The new Bulgarian patriarch was elected in a runoff between Metropolitan Grigoriy of Vratsa and Metropolitan Daniil of Vidin.

69 delegates voted for Metropolitan Daniil of Vidin, 66 for Metropolitan Grigoriy of Vratsa, and there were also three invalid ballots. After that, the solemn enthronement of the new Bulgarian patriarch took place in the patriarchal cathedral “St. Alexander Nevsky”.

Patriarch Daniel of Bulgaria celebrates First Divine Liturgy – Epifaniy of Kyiv was not commemorated

On Monday, July 1, 2024, at the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, newly elected Bulgarian Patriarch Daniel celebrated his first Patriarchal Divine Liturgy as the Primate of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. This significant day also marked the 555th anniversary of the return of the holy relics of St. John of Rila from Tarnovo to the Rila Monastery.

“The tasks ahead are many. The head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church must embody the unity of the Holy Synod and our people, as the vocation of the Church is to unite those who are divided,” stated Patriarch Daniel before the commencement of the liturgy. He emphasized that “the Church signifies unity” and that “a people are called by God to be together with Him, to be united in love.”

Reflecting on the resilience of the Rila Monastery, Patriarch Daniel remarked, “It is remarkable how through the vicissitudes endured by our country and the Rila Monastery, it always restores itself. The saint’s support and patronage are evident, showing us the way and interceding for us before God.”

He highlighted the historical significance of the day, commemorating the return of the relics of St. John of Rila to the Rila Monastery in 1469. “The Rila Monastery is the first Bulgarian national institution revived after the fall of Bulgaria under Turkish rule,” he noted.

Synodal Divine Liturgy: Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv Not Commemorated

The Patriarchal and Synodal Divine Liturgy was celebrated, during which Patriarch Daniel commemorated the Primates of the Orthodox Churches for the first time as the newly elected and enthroned Bulgarian Patriarch. He honored the heads of the Local Orthodox Churches, including the Orthodox Patriarchs: Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Theodore of Alexandria, John X of Antioch, Theophilus III of Jerusalem, Cyril of Moscow and All Russia, Ilia II of Georgia, Porfirije of Serbia, Daniel of Romania, and the archbishops and metropolitans: George of Cyprus, Ieronymos of Athens, Sava of Poland, Anastasius of Albania, Rostislav of Bohemia and Slavia, and Stephen of Ohrid.

Notably absent from the commemoration was Metropolitan Epifaniy of Kyiv and All Ukraine. This omission aligns with Patriarch Daniel’s previously expressed views on the Ukrainian issue. In an interview shortly before his election, he stated that Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew caused the division by granting the Tomos of Autocephaly to the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and affirmed his recognition of the Moscow Patriarchate’s structure in Ukraine under Metropolitan Onufriy.

Interestingly, Patriarch Daniel commemorated the Archbishop of Ohrid, despite the fact that his church has not been granted a Tomos of Autocephaly from the Ecumenical Patriarchate, whereas the Orthodox Church of Ukraine has. He referred to him as Archbishop of “North Macedonia,” following the provisional solution provided by the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church regarding the church’s name.

During the Divine Liturgy, Bishop Gerasimos, the Chief Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Church of Bulgaria, read a Patriarchal and Synodal Message to the clergy.

  1. “In His First Liturgy, Patriarch Daniel Did Not Commemorate Epiphanios* Of Ukraine”

Yes, and as it SHOULD BE!

    *Schismatic heretic.

  2. The election of Daniil has drawn criticism from some Bulgarian priests, including Archimandrite Nicanor, the abbot of the Giga monastery near Sofia.
“It’s like a KGB textbook! Patriarch Daniil of Bulgaria be happy! My patriarch from today is called (Ecumenical Patriarch) Bartholomew. Tomorrow, I am applying to leave the Bulgarian Orthodox Church!” Nicanor stated.

Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova attended the enthronement of the newly elected Patriarch and urged the Bulgarian Orthodox Church not to recognize the independent Church of Ukraine.

    • Unfortunately Orthodoxy has suffered a serious schism, due to the Patriarchate of Constantinople acting as a pawn of the State Dept. The Russians have a century ago acted politically very aggressive also. But in recent years(after the fall of communism) they were almost perfect in their role as protectors of the Orthodox faith. The best advancement of religious freedom of the Patriarchate was Turkey allowing the reopening of Panagia Soumela historical monastery. This happened by a simple phonecall by Putin to Erdogan. They also respected the Patriarch’s authority on Mt. Athos. The Turks would not dare turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque if the Russians were in good terms with Bartholomew. Now, as I said many times, the Patriarchate risks being kicked out of Constantinople.

  3. “Word on the street” is that Elpidophoros is going to start the canonization process for Elder Ephraim.

Glory to God because I do believe he is a saint. However, this is so out of character for Elpi I can’t help but think there are ulterior motives as there usually is with almost everyone within the EP

    • Of course there are ulterior motives. Bart and Elpi have spit in the faces of true Orthodox Christians so often that they are now throwing this crumb to make people forget their evils deeds.

The sin of division and schism that they have sown in Ukraine will never be forgiven. I hope they get everything they deserve in the kingdom of their dark master the father of lies.

  4. After the storm of the Ukraine war
Satans are going to hide themselves
in the darkness and Orthodoxy will
    prevail again.
The cosmos is changing rapidly if we
can maintain live the candle the small
light will become Flame and it’s brightness is going to bring all orthodox together for ever.
    Amen
