Vatican excommunicates Viganò for schism

The Vatican has officially excommunicated Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith announced Friday.

Viganò was found guilty of the canonical crime, or delict, of schism, or the refusal to submit to the pope or the communion of the Church, at the conclusion of the Vatican’s extrajudicial penal process on July 4.

The Vatican’s doctrine office announced the “latae sententiae” excommunication (automatic excommunication) on July 5, citing Viganò’s “public statements manifesting his refusal to recognize and submit to the Supreme Pontiff, his rejection of communion with the members of the Church subject to him, and of the legitimacy and magisterial authority of the Second Vatican Council.”

The former papal nuncio to the United States is now excommunicated, the most serious penalty a baptized person can incur, which consists of being placed outside the communion of the faithful of the Catholic Church and denied access to the sacraments.

The ruling comes after Viganò defied a Vatican summons to appear before the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith to face charges of schism last week.

The former Vatican diplomat — who garnered headlines in 2018 for alleging that senior Church officials covered up abuses committed by former cardinal Theodore McCarrick — has repeatedly rejected the authority of Pope Francis since then and has called on him to resign.

In a lengthy statement shared on social media June 28, Viganò accused Pope Francis of “heresy and schism” over his promotion of COVID-19 vaccines and his overseeing of the 2018 Vatican-China deal on the appointment of bishops.

He also said he has “no reason to consider myself separate from communion with the holy Church and with the papacy, which I have always served with filial devotion and fidelity.”

“I maintain that the errors and heresies to which [Francis] adhered before, during, and after his election, along with the intention he held in his apparent acceptance of the papacy, render his elevation to the throne null and void,” Viganò wrote.

Viganò, who has been in hiding for years, announced on social media June 20 that he had been summoned to Rome to answer formal charges of schism.

The specific charges outlined against Viganò, according to a document he himself posted, involved making public statements that allegedly deny the fundamental elements necessary to maintain communion with the Catholic Church. This included denying the legitimacy of Pope Francis as the rightful pontiff and the outright rejection of the Second Vatican Council.

In response to the charges, Viganò said in a June 21 statement that he had not sent any materials in his defense to the Vatican, noting that he did not recognize the authority of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith “nor that of its prefect, nor that of the person who appointed him.”

Viganò’s excommunication can only be lifted by the Apostolic See.

    • Gus,

      Really…What’s this supposed to mean?

In general, “ο αφορισμενος δεν δυναται να αφορισει”… :)
The “unworthiness” plaguing many members of the hierarchy is a self-inflicted wound…the perpetrators chose to deviate from Orthodox Tradition with their words and deeds. In past centuries, where saintly hierarchs were still in the voting majority of Synods, it wouldn’t be the laity yelling “anaxios” that would be excommunicated, but rather the scandalizing bishops that would be defrocked by their Synod…even in recent history, we see what the results of “invalid excommucations and defrocking” lead…read up on the story of St. Nektarios, for example… Speaking of which, have you read St. Nektarios’s monumental 2 volume work titled “Μελετη Ιστορικη περι των Αιτιων του Σχισματος”? I guarantee you, it’s not prescribed reading in circles of the Ecumenical Patriarchate these days, especially by those hierarchs that publicly kiss the Pope’s hand and call him “παναγιωτατε”, before joining in “common prayers” and “common declarations” with the Vatican…St. Nektarios didn’t and wouldn’t do that…

The real question here Gus is, are you planning to join the worsening schism that is both unfolding before our eyes for several years now, as well as diverging from the path of the Orthodox Fathers, or do you plan to stand your ground as an Ομολογητης and determine which hierarchs (in the aftermath) are true to their promise about upholding the Traditions and Canons of the Orthodox Church? Lemmings always appear to be “strong in numbers”, until they fall off the cliff in the icy Antarctic waters and become dinner for predators waiting below…you see the sheepskins, but you don’t see the wolf…

  1. I doubt if he becomes Orthodox, though that would be nice. He’ll probably end up attaching himself to one of the Old Catholic Churches

  2. The “Archbishop” Vigano was schismatic, and he is schismatic still. I don’t read anything at all about him wanting to be Orthodox. Maybe he’ll be another Martin Luther.

    • Really Tony .. Jesus Christ , Paul and the desciples of Christ were Schismatic and still schismatics for confronting and challenging the Sins of the Barbaric Ruling Empire of Rome and the Judaic high priests of Israel in distorting the laws of God to rule over the world ! And Martin luther king Jr. was considered a Schismatic and still is in Confronting the sins of the Barbaric U.S empire and the Evangelical and Protestant high priest of America in distorting and not enforcing the laws of God to rule over the world! …
The only difference between Vignano and Jesus , his desciples, and Martin luther king Jr is that all of them were arrested and murdered for their “insubordination and truths ” , while Vigano is just excommunicated from the Anti-Christ Empire of America and EU crime families! And Tony .. they all were part of the Christian Church, whether it be Orthodox or Catholic! And Maybe Vigano. will be another Martin luther King jr. and create a whole army of Schismatics.. prepared to die for our lord to confront Evil !

      • Martin Luther went against the Vatican, and he was excommunicated by the Pope in 1521, but he didn’t become Orthodox, did he?

  3. I share more beliefs in common with Cardinal Vigaro than I do with some Orthodox bishops whom I won’t name now. I hope you consider joining us. We like and need confessors of the faith like you. Keep working on that papal infallibility thing. I suspect that will be an easy one for you.

  4. It’s tricky to say that he can be “absorbed” by an Orthodox jurisdiction. It would require formal rejection of many things, including the Filioque, and I’m not sure he’s planning to “go all the way” on rejecting all Vatican dogma post 1054 A.D. There’s a VERY long list of dogmatic items he’d have to publicly renounce in order to become Orthodox… We also don’t know his official position on the possibility of the growing possibility of a serious compromise by Bartholomew next year on the occasion of a common date for Pascha…

Nevertheless, Vigano does represent an important “voice of resistance” within the corrupt Vatican circles…we’ll see how long Pope Bergolio lasts…he’s old and frail, and many Roman Catholics don’t like him anyway…the next guy might “lift” the Vigano excommunication anyway…order your popcorn folks, just in case the show gets interesting over the next couple of years…

  5. It is highly recommended to Helleniscope that they feature the entire famous Speech of Rev. Martin luther King jr… “Silence is Betrayal..Beyond Vietnam” on April 7th, 1968 at the Riverside Baptist Church in Riverside, N.Y. ! The speech by King provided moral stance against the foreign policies of the Republican and Democratic ruling parties of America in the Vietnam War , but provide lessons on the immoral wars in the Middle East and Ukraine ! Additionally, like King .. Archbishop Carlo Mario Vigano.. did not remain silent to the “Immoral Policies” of the Vatican of the Catholic Church and EU, the Vatican of the “Globalist “U.S and EU/Nato governments ! And like Rev Martin luther King Jr. , and Jesus and his Desciples was declared a schematic , and silenced one way or another!

King told reporters on Face the Nation that as a minister he had “a prophetic function” and as “one greatly concerned about the need for peace in our world and the survival of mankind, I must continue to take a stand on this issue” (King, 29 August 1965).

The speech by Marin luther King Jr. demanded we not remain silent to the destroyers of the world .. the Ruling Republican and Democratic Parties of America, because their would be more Vietnams… like now in the Ukraine and Middle East .. The following is except from Kings speech , which Navigo calls for …

“We still have a choice today: nonviolent coexistence or violent co-annihilation. We must move past indecision to action. We must find new ways to speak for peace in Vietnam and justice throughout the developing world, a world that borders on our doors. If we do not act, we shall surely be dragged down the long, dark, and shameful corridors of time reserved for those who possess “power without compassion, might without morality, and strength without sight.” Now let us begin. Now let us rededicate ourselves to the long and bitter, but beautiful, struggle for a new world. This is the calling of the sons of God, and our brothers wait eagerly for our response. Shall we say the odds are too great? Shall we tell them the struggle is too hard? Will our message be that the “forces of American life” militate against their arrival as full men, and we send our deepest regrets? Or will there be another message—of longing, of hope, of solidarity with their yearnings, of commitment to their cause, whatever the cost? The choice is ours, and though we might prefer it otherwise, we must choose in this crucial moment of human history.

“We seem bent upon saving the Vietnamese ( Ukraine) from Ho Chi Minh,(Putin) even if we have to kill them and demolish their country to do it. I do not intend to remain silent in the face of what I regard as a policy of madness which, sooner or later, will envelop my son and American youth by the millions for years to come.” —Senator George McGovern (D-SD) speaking on the Senate floor on April 25, 1967.

According to the PBS documentary MLK: A Call to Conscience (2010), the speech was denounced by 168 newspapers across the country.

Senator Barry Goldwater (AZ), the Republican Party presidential nominee in 1964, said the speech “could border a bit on treason.”

Yes Helleniscope .. print the entire Speech .. and consider it testimony to all your Articles and Helleniscope . as Journalist who have not betrayed mankind .. and remained silent to the criminal policies of Greek Orthodox Church and the United States government!

Helleniscope , consider this post , my allowed “one comment a day” allocation!
