Buffalo’s Annunciation Parish Confronts Misuse of Sacred Trust By Priest

BUFFALO, NY – In a difficult and sobering chapter for the Greek Orthodox faithful in Western New York, the parish of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church is navigating a storm of grief, division, and renewal following the removal of its longtime priest, Rev. Dr. Christos Christakis.

After more than a decade of service, Father Christakis was relieved of his duties this past June amid revelations that he had misused over $365,000 in church funds—money entrusted by the faithful for spiritual ministry, philanthropy, and the life of the Church.

At a general assembly on June 22, the parish voted 60 to 27 not to refer the matter to the Erie County District Attorney, a decision that has sparked debate and soul-searching within the community.

“This is not just a financial matter,” said one parishioner who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s about the sanctity of trust and leadership in the body of Christ.”

Spiritual and Emotional Fallout

Many parishioners were stunned to learn that funds—some reportedly earmarked for charitable outreach and parish programs—had been diverted for personal use by the priest they once trusted implicitly.

According to members who attended the June meeting, church officials disclosed that the actual amount misused may be closer to $550,000, though this figure remains unconfirmed.

George A. Tsougarakis, general counsel for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, responded to the concerns, stating in an email:

“During its investigation, the Archdiocese was unable to confirm a precise amount of church funds that were misused. But, as we reported, it is our belief that the amount is less than $550,000.”

Nonetheless, Tsougarakis affirmed that $365,000 in restitution had already been recovered from Father Christakis. That recovery played a significant role in the parish’s decision to forgo criminal prosecution—though not all agreed.

A Community Torn

Inside the sanctuary where generations have been baptized, married, and eulogized, division now lingers.

“Forgiveness is central to our faith,” said Maria Theodosopoulos, a parish council member. “But forgiveness does not mean we shouldn’t seek accountability.”

Others see the full restitution as an opportunity to begin healing—citing the words of the Divine Liturgy: “Let us love one another that with one mind we may confess…”

“If the money has been returned, and he has confessed, who among us has not sinned?” said Yianni Koufogiannis, a lifelong parishioner.

The Role of the Archdiocese

The Archdiocese of America, under the spiritual leadership of His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros, has monitored the situation closely. While disciplinary action was taken and Father Christakis was removed from ministry, the Archdiocese has so far deferred to the local parish on the question of legal referral.

No criminal charges have been filed, and the District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that they will not pursue the case unless the church formally refers it.

Historic Church, Enduring Faith

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Buffalo, a sacred landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has stood for over a century as a beacon of Orthodoxy in Western New York. With its richly iconographed walls and Byzantine hymns echoing across pews filled with generations of Greek Americans, the church is now facing a test of unity.

“It’s our duty now to turn this sorrow into strength,” said Parish President Eleni Pappas. “To remember what binds us: our faith, our Hellenic heritage, and our love for Christ.”
