Greece reaffirms its historic guardianship of the world’s oldest Christian monastery, as a new Archbishop begins his mission in the desert of Moses.

A Day of Renewal at the Foot of Mount Sinai…

Under the eternal peaks of Mount Sinai — where Moses once received the Tablets of the Law — a new chapter opened in the life of the Orthodox Church.
On October 31, 2025, His Eminence Archbishop Symeon Papadopoulos was enthroned as Archbishop of Sinai, Pharan and Raithu at the sacred Monastery of Saint Catherine, one of Christianity’s oldest surviving institutions.

The enthronement followed his ordination at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem on October 19, presided over by Patriarch Theophilos III. The event drew senior clergy, diplomats, scholars, and pilgrims from across the Orthodox world.

Continuity Through the Centuries

The Sinai Brotherhood, a monastic community dating back nearly 1,500 years, unanimously elected Archimandrite Symeon in September to succeed the late Archbishop Damianos.
In a statement from the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the brotherhood called the new Archbishop “a humble servant of peace and guardian of the Holy Mountain.”

The ceremony at Saint Catherine’s blended timeless ritual and rare intimacy: the ringing of ancient bells, the chanting of Axios, and the quiet dignity of monks who have kept vigil in the desert since the days of Emperor Justinian.

Mitsotakis: “Greece Will Always Stand by Sinai”

Among the honored guests was Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, whose presence underscored the enduring connection between Greece and the Monastery.
In his address, Mitsotakis declared:

“It is our national duty to maintain our continuous interest in the Monastery’s vital spiritual and cultural mission… Greece will continue to stand by you at every step and support you at every level.”

He also emphasized that Greece and Egypt have worked together to safeguard the monastery’s autonomy and cultural heritage, ensuring it remains a symbol of coexistence and dialogue between faiths.

Between Jerusalem and Cairo

The Archbishop of Sinai occupies a position unlike any other in Orthodoxy — an abbot and hierarch simultaneously, under the spiritual authority of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, yet situated within Egyptian territory.
This dual identity requires sensitivity and diplomacy, balancing ancient ecclesiastical ties with modern state relations.
Observers noted that Archbishop Symeon, known for his scholarly approach and conciliatory spirit, is expected to continue building bridges between Jerusalem, Cairo, and Athens.

Legacy of Light

The Monastery of Saint Catherine is not only a sanctuary of faith but also a treasury of civilization — home to the world’s oldest continuously operating library, a priceless collection of Byzantine icons, and manuscripts in Greek, Arabic, Syriac, and Latin.
As the monks celebrated the enthronement, they did so with awareness that their mission — prayer, scholarship, and preservation — is as vital today as ever.

 A Message for the Diaspora

For the Greek diaspora, the ceremony carried special meaning.
Saint Catherine’s stands as a living monument of Hellenic Orthodoxy, a place where Greek letters, liturgy, and art have survived uninterrupted for fifteen centuries.
The enthronement of Archbishop Symeon is therefore more than a clerical transition — it is a renewal of Greece’s spiritual presence in the wider world, a reminder that the desert still speaks in the voice of our ancestors.
