Washington’s double standards on EEZ rights—and the freezing of Eastern Mediterranean energy—leave Europe paying the price.

The signing of the Greece–Ukraine LNG agreement in Athens came with unmistakable symbolism: U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle stood front and center, signaling Washington’s direct investment in steering American LNG deeper into Eastern Europe’s energy architecture.
President Zelensky’s presence added urgency, but the core economic contradiction remains impossible to ignore.
American LNG is among the most expensive import options on the planet:
“U.S. LNG costs three to four times more than Russian pipeline gas—and far more than undeveloped Eastern Mediterranean resources.”
For a war-torn Ukraine struggling to stay warm this winter, signing onto premium-priced LNG raises serious questions about sustainability.
For Eastern EU economies already dealing with inflation and shrinking industrial output, this strategy borders on self-harm.
And yet, Washington’s energy diplomacy keeps pushing LNG while simultaneously suppressing the region’s more logical alternative: the vast natural gas reserves of Greece and Cyprus.
For nearly twenty years, U.S. foreign policy promoted a baffling and legally baseless idea: that gas deposits belonging to Greece and Cyprus should somehow be “equitably shared” with Turkey—a country whose claims blatantly violate the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the sovereign rights of two EU member states.
“If the U.S. believes in ‘equitable distribution,’ why does it not share its Gulf of Mexico fields with Mexico, Cuba, or the Bahamas?”
This supposed doctrine appears only in one region on earth—the Eastern Mediterranean.
Not in the Gulf of Mexico.
Not in the Caribbean.
Not along America’s Pacific coastline.
And certainly not in the South China Sea, where the U.S. takes the opposite position, defending the EEZ rights of Taiwan and the Philippines against China’s aggressive expansionism.
“In Asia the U.S. defends maritime law; in the Eastern Mediterranean, it undermines it.”
The consequences for Europe are profound.
By discouraging Eastern Mediterranean development, Washington has effectively blocked a reliable, friendly, and affordable regional energy source, leaving Europe forced into overpriced imports at the very moment its economies can least afford them.
The Athens ceremony may succeed geopolitically—benefitting U.S. exporters and giving Greece a visible role as an LNG transit hub—but it does little to help the financial survival of Eastern Europe or the reconstruction of Ukraine.
As the applause fades and the winter sets in, one question grows harder to ignore:
“When will U.S. policy align with international law—and with Europe’s real economic interests?”

Absolutely insane. No responsible government — especially one burdened by debt, austerity, and disastrously weakened public services — should commit to paying 4× the global rate for the same product everyone else buys at a fraction of the cost.
