In a spectacle that would be comical if it weren’t so embarrassing, GOARCH handed the title of “Teacher of the Greek Nation” to a 30-year-old political networker with barely a whisper of ecclesial service. Even more absurd, insiders say he bypassed the hefty financial obligations traditionally required of Archons—gliding in on political connections rather than merit. This episode exposes, once again, how sacred honors are being cheapened for the sake of influence and convenience.

In the long and colorful saga of GOARCH’s excesses, the elevation of 30-year-old Christos Marafatsos to Archon – Didaskalos tou Genous may be the most laughable episode yet. The Archons themselves define this title as one reserved for “distinguished service” and “outstanding leadership”—terms that historically applied to scholars, benefactors, and elders of the community who spent decades laboring for the Church. Yet here we are, watching a young political networker suddenly draped in the mantle of “Teacher of the Greek Nation,” as if the Ecumenical Patriarchate has decided that ecclesial gravitas can be conferred like a party favor.
What fuels the public’s ridicule is not merely the mismatch between the grandeur of the title and the modest résumé of its new holder. It’s the heavy scent of political convenience that wafts over the entire affair. Marafatsos’ closeness to the new U.S. Ambassador to Greece—Kimberly Guilfoyle, a figure whose appointment alone raised eyebrows—has not gone unnoticed. Community insiders whisper that this elevation was less about service and more about proximity, less about ecclesial contribution and more about useful connections. When Orthodox honors begin to look like diplomatic accessories, people naturally conclude that the Church is handing out medals the way lobbyists hand out business cards.

And then there’s the elephant in the room: money. Traditionally, the path to becoming an Archon has included a serious financial commitment—often well north of $100,000, reflecting both the weight of the honor and the needs of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Yet sources suggest that in this case, the customary contribution was… absent. If true, it transforms this ceremony from a venerable ecclesial recognition into a moment of pure parody. Imagine asking faithful parishioners to dig deep for stewardship while a politically connected novice glides into the upper ranks without paying what everyone else must. The optics are, to put it mildly, catastrophic.
In the end, the real tragedy is what this spectacle says about the state of GOARCH and the Patriarchate’s American apparatus. By handing out sacred titles as if they were promotional giveaways, the leadership undermines the dignity of the honors themselves and insults the many Archons who did earn their place through decades of service and sacrifice. If the Church wishes to retain even a shred of credibility with the Greek-American faithful. In that case, it must decide whether its highest distinctions are meant for servants of the Church or servants of political ambition. As it stands, the Marafatsos episode will be remembered not as an elevation, but as yet another self-inflicted humiliation.
We have reached the end of the road with GOARCH and the CORRUPT Patriarchate. It’s either “Autocephaly NOW” or they will have to face the wrath of the faithful: KICK THE TURKS OUT OF OUR CHURCH!! Astoria has started the process – the rest of us will finish it!!

My heartfelt thanks to His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Archbishop Elpidophoros, Metropolitan Apostolos, and the Archon mentors who guided me through this journey and entrusted me with this great honor.

The level that GOARCH has reached, is lower than the bottom of the ocean. As the article points out, Marafatsos has not accomplished what the medal stands for, therefore, it should not be awarded to him. This is another debasement of the church, in its attempt to stay relevant. Marafatsos is not even an advisor to Trump. He is just a hanger on. Anyone who shows slavish devotion to Trump, is made to feel closer to the center of power, even if they have no power at al Which is the case with Marafatsos.
The archons are known to recruit anyone who has attained some form of distinction, and professes to be nominally Greek Orthodox. I know of a former police chief of the Port of Authority in N.Y.-N.J. who was made archon as soon as he had reached the position of police chief. He only stayed as a chief for a few months. I doubt he had made any financial contribution.
The fact that Elpidoforos is part of Trump’s “freedom of religion” sham panel, he now feels that he needs to honor and befriend any devout Trump follower. Hence the medal and distinguished sounding title. Bottom line though, is it means nothing. It does not promote the faith, it makes the church look ridiculous and the medal itself is devalued. As devalued a GOA has become.
Let’s all of us, STOP paying stewardship and give the money to real charities, instead of wasting our hard earned dollars on the hypocrites who wear rassa.
This story demonstrates how fitting “Archons of Disaster” truly is.
Archons of Disaster is the wrong term and implies these clowns can even affect a disaster.
I prefer Archons of Nothing headed by and populated with nobodies.

Simony= the sale of ecclesial offices in exchange for money.
The Grifters have PhDs in Simony.
Unless CHRISTOS inherits money,he will waste his youth and whatever talents he has by succumbing to the disease known as “ I Want To Be The Most Famous Greek” – a terminal disease.
Then, he ends up like the “famous” son of the “famous” you-know-who.

While the GOA gives all kinds of awards, titles, and regalia to its special people, the other jurisdiction stay the course and try to do what Orthodoxy is supposed to do. We are to strive to achieve union with God, theosis. The Church sanctifies us with the Holy Mysteries. The priests help us struggle and grow in Christ.Nearly all the Orthodox jurisdictions have produced Saints-holy people who have united with God. Some that come to mind-St. Herman of Alaska, St. Innocent, Martyr Peter the Aleut, St. Tikhon, St. John of San Francisco, St, Maderije of Libertyville, St. Raphael of Brooklyn, St. Alexis of Wilkes-Barre, St. Olga and many more than I can remember right now. These jurisdictions are doing their jobs in turning the faithful to God in heaven where they will hopefully receive their heavenly awards.
And what about the GOA? Quo Vadis, O GOA? I think it’s time for a GOA major reset.
True but not a mere reset, but a housecleaning of vipers, grifters and poseurs. Plus certified audits at every level and financial accountability according to results.

Marafatsos is no teacher. The man was not in the trenches going against the Turkish, Skopian, or Albanian lobbies in DC. Has he organized a protest against the Turkish Embassy for the illegal occupation of Cyprus? He is a 30 something year old who knows only to take photos of himself going to events. Has he written serious pieces? I doubt he read any books on Ancient, Byzantine, and Modern Greek history. What is his resume and credentials? Anyone can take a phone….take photos of himself with Trump, and go to events in DC….form a fake online Greek group with no goals or strategy to MAKE GREECE GREAT AGAIN.
