Fascinating, enthralling, and alive with anticipation. The air itself seems to pulse as sound and movement draw thousands into a shared moment that transcends time.
Patriarch Theofilos advances (please watch around minute 3:30), not in silence, but amid this captivating atmosphere, rhythms that stir the senses, melodies that echo through stone corridors, and a procession as mesmerizing as it is sacred. Drums resound with a steady, commanding heartbeat, while wind instruments carry bright, piercing tones that seem to dance above the crowd.
Among them, a familiar sound — the bagpipe.
And NO, this is not an import from the highlands of Scotland or Ireland – the reverse!! Long before it became emblematic of Celtic identity, the bagpipe, known in various forms across the Middle East, traces its lineage to the region thousands of years ago… Babylonians and Hittites were likely the inventors…. You know, those people who, according to Trump, lived in the Stone Ages and are waiting for the barbarians of German/Scottish descent like himself and his equally barbarian Zionist friends to “be saved” and learn “culture”…
What we witness here is not a fusion, but a continuity.
