Speaking to Vima, Donald Trump’s adviser, Christos Marafatsos, claimed that “there has not been a president tougher on Erdogan than Donald Trump”
President Trump’s relationship with Recep Tayyip Erdogan has had its ups and downs. This ups and downs may have been the fateful result of the intersection of two such special personalities. However, despite disagreements, threats and divergences, the bridges of communication between the two sides never ceased to exist.
Four years later, the United States is preparing to enter a new and long election season. Erdogan may not be high on the agenda, but Turkey’s revisionism is certainly worrying some American voters who have a vested interest in Eastern Mediterranean issues.

This motley group naturally includes Greek-Americans. In any case, however, they are not the only ones who have an issue with Erdogan’s policies. If one takes a closer look at the electorate, one will see that there are Armenian, Jewish, Christian evangelical, and Kurdish organizations that have now targeted Turkey.
However, Trump’s campaign adviser, Christos Marafatsos, maintains that the former president’s open lines of communication with Erdogan do not influence his policy decisions.
Speaking to Vima, Mr. Marafatsos emphasizes that Donald Trump was particularly politically tough towards Recep Tayyip Erdogan, while arguing that during his term, the US made a major strategic turn in the Eastern Mediterranean that put Greece at the center .
The polls give you a satisfying lead. However, a presidential contest is different from a caucus. Are you concerned that this lead could reverse if Trump doesn’t improve his performance among moderate and independent voters?
Look, if the election were today, President Trump would win it by a wide margin. This is a fact. We all know it, and Joe Biden knows it. Day by day, President Trump is making progress. And day by day, people are losing faith in Joe Biden. He can’t perform the way a president should perform. Instead, we see that Donald was just now here at CPAC (Conservative Political Action Conference), where he was scheduled to speak for an hour. He stood on the podium for two and a half hours, telling us that he is going to work for the American people. This is what Americans expect from a president.
So, the election campaign is paying off extremely well. We are highly organized for 2024 to win it. We are highly prepared. Trump is willing to do whatever it takes to be the next president. We see it day in and day out. He’s weathering court battles, leading in the polls, and really, he’s marching steadily toward a November victory. So we’re clearly ahead and I think Joe Biden is lucky the election isn’t happening today.
Despite his tough stance on immigration, we see that Donald Trump is particularly popular in the Greek-American community, which is also an immigrant community. Do you see anything paradoxical about this support?
As a Greek-American from a family that came here in the 50s, like many of our fathers and grandfathers before us who did so well in the US, this question is very important to me. And you made a good point. Most Greek Americans support Donald Trump. We did polls in 2016 and 2020 and we saw that over 70% of Greek Americans support him. This is due to the following reasons. First, we know he’s a businessman. We know he will get up every day and work for the American people. As Greeks, we came to this country, overcame obstacles, and worked to build a better future for ourselves and our families. And that’s what Donald Trump has done for this country. As far as immigration is concerned, it is an important issue. We came to this country as legal immigrants. Donald Trump is pro-legal immigration. Right now, we’re seeing almost 250,000 people coming into our southern border and we have no idea who they are.
Jim Jordan with Ivanka trump And Jared Kushner in Washington DCThat’s one of the biggest problems, not just because of national security, not just because of concerns about jobs and economic growth, but because of the fact that we don’t know who these people are. Where do they come from? What do they want? Do they have their interests in America? We don’t know that. Donald Trump will find out. And as Greeks, as immigrants who have come to this country and worked all these decades to provide our families with a better life, that is all we can ask for. A place where we can feel safe in America. A place where our jobs are protected. And a place where our children are safe.
I want to dwell on your answer because we know that many Greeks arrived illegally in the US. Some of them worked hard both for their families and for the country that hosted them. So even if we’re talking about illegal immigrants, does Trump’s rhetoric cross certain red lines?
Regardless of the administration, even if you look at the policies of the Joe Biden administration, we have policies to protect the border. Regardless of whether we have left or right, Democrats or Republicans, it is the job of every president to know that there is a (immigration) system in place that will ensure that inflows into our country are made in a way that is predictable, (legally) permissible, and that we can we impose him. Joe Biden doesn’t do that.
President Trump wants immigration. It invites people to come here and start a new life. So I think that’s a good question. Because Donald Trump has promised to be president for all the people. And not just Americans, but we see the world saying, where is it? We want him back. You know, there’s a big war on almost every continent right now. The world is no better than it was four years ago. So the first thing a president should do is enforce existing policies. He knows how to do that. He is a good businessman and we look forward to having him back in 2024.
Speaking for the world, President Trump “encouraged” Russia to attack NATO countries that do not meet the alliance’s defense spending pledge of 2 percent of GDP. Should allies in Europe worry about a potential Trump re-election?
President Trump has repeatedly said that a strong NATO is what we need in this world. And it’s what he wants and what he’s going to do. We heard Donald Trump’s comments. And these happened because we have states that are members of NATO but do not bear their fair burdens (2% of GDP in defense spending). The US is a major contributor to NATO. And you know who else is also contributing? Greece providing 2%. But the majority of NATO member countries do not. And who does this affect? It affects countries like the United States and Greece who pay their fair share.
So, Trump wants a strong NATO. In fact, NATO was stronger when Donald Trump was president from 2016 to 2020. Now it is weak. And Donald Trump realizes this. And he wants the world to be a better and safer place. And the way we do that is when we all come together. We already have an existing organization. No need to create a new structure. But what he’s trying to say is that we have a policy here. We have an organization that can protect us from wars and conflicts. NATO is doing nothing right now. He has limited ability because he doesn’t have the resources. So, if Donald Trump were president, he would ensure from day one that NATO member states pay their fair share. And that will make us all safer.
Are you implying, then, that we should not take his words at face value and that perhaps we are dealing with campaign rhetoric?
Trump wants a stronger NATO, and he knows the way to do that is for the members who reap the benefits to make sure they pay their fair share. Because you know what? When Donald Trump was president for four years, we had no war. In fact, he stopped them all. And now that’s completely reversed.
You speak as if you are implying that President Biden is responsible for the wars in Ukraine and Israel. What different moves would Donald Trump have made to prevent these conflicts?
The presidential ethos that Donald Trump wanted to bring was an ethos of peace. And that’s what he did. He brought peace through projection of power.
We remember that Trump was in close contact with Recep Tayyip Erdogan and there was a communication channel that was called “groom diplomacy”. Should Greece be concerned about this relationship and how does the political doctrine of “America First” align with International Law which forms the basis of Greek foreign policy?
As Greek Americans we are all worried about Erdogan. And I think we’ve seen a strong and fundamental shift take place that was initiated by Donald Trump in the period between 2016 and 2020. If you look at history, regardless of whether the president was a Republican or a Democrat, Turkey has always been an important ally of the US. So is Greece, but there has always been a greater interest in Turkey. That changed during the Trump presidency. He saw Greece in the Eastern Mediterranean as a very strategic partner that has been a stable ally for decades.
So it might sound like Trump and Erdogan had a great relationship, but at the end of the day, if we look at things from a political point of view, there has not been a president who has been tougher on Erdogan than Donald Trump. We saw this in practice through the policy he pursued. Regardless of Republicans or Democrats, Donald Trump changed the course of Greek-American relations in modern history. We haven’t seen anything like this in the last 40 years. This is important. And you know, the fact that he has a relationship with Erdogan and all the big leaders is actually a good thing, because he can pick up the phone and talk to them.
And you mentioned people who served in the government like Jared Kushner. He was amazing in the White House and did a wonderful job, for example, bringing peace to the Middle East through the Abraham Accords. This was a peace deal that no one expected would ever happen. Jared Kushner was one of the main people who implemented it physically along with President Donald Trump. And we’re very lucky to have a president like Donald Trump because he’s tough on bad actors. So if Putin started a war, he would pick up the phone and say no today.

Ησχέση του προέδρου Τραμπ με τον Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν είχε τα πάνω και τα κάτω της. Αυτό τα σκαμπανεβάσματα ίσως να ήταν το μοιραίο αποτέλεσμα της διασταύρωσης δύο τόσο ιδιαίτερων προσωπικοτήτων. Ωστόσο, παρά τις διαφωνίες, τις απειλές και τις αποκλίσεις, οι γέφυρες της επικοινωνίας μεταξύ των δύο πλευρών δεν έπαυσαν ποτέ να υπάρχουν.

Ωστόσο, ο σύμβουλος της προεκλογικής εκστρατείας του Τραμπ, Χρήστος Μαραφάτσος, υποστηρίζει ότι οι ανοιχτοί δίαυλοι επικοινωνίας που είχε ο πρώην πρόεδρος με τον Ερντογάν δεν επηρεάζουν τις πολιτικές του αποφάσεις.
Μιλώντας στο «Βήμα» ο κ. Μαραφάτσος τονίζει ότι ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ ήταν ιδιαίτερα πολιτικά σκληρός απέναντι στον Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν, υποστηρίζοντας συγχρόνως ότι κατά τη διάρκεια της θητείας του, οι ΗΠΑ έκαναν μια μεγάλη στρατηγική στροφή στην Ανατολική Μεσόγειο που έβαλε στο επίκεντρο την Ελλάδα.
Οι δημοσκοπήσεις σας δίνουν ένα ικανοποιητικό προβάδισμα. Ωστόσο, μια προεδρική αναμέτρηση είναι διαφορετική από μια εσωκομματική. Σας ανησυχεί ότι αυτό το προβάδισμα μπορεί να αντιστραφεί εάν ο Τραμπ δεν βελτιώσει τις επιδόσεις του στους μετριοπαθείς και ανεξάρτητους ψηφοφόρους;

Οπότε, προηγούμαστε ξεκάθαρα και νομίζω ότι ο Τζο Μπάιντεν είναι τυχερός που οι εκλογές δεν γίνονται σήμερα.

Ως Ελληνοαμερικανός από μια οικογένεια που ήρθε εδώ τη δεκαετία του ’50, όπως πολλοί από τους πατεράδες και τους παππούδες μας πριν από εμάς που τα πήγαν τόσο καλά στις ΗΠΑ, αυτή η ερώτηση είναι πολύ σημαντική για μένα. Και κάνατε μια καλή παρατήρηση. Οι περισσότεροι Ελληνοαμερικανοί υποστηρίζουν τον Ντόναλντ Τραμπ. Ως Έλληνες, ήρθαμε σε αυτή τη χώρα, ξεπεράσαμε τα εμπόδια, και εργαστήκαμε για να οικοδομήσουμε ένα καλύτερο μέλλον για εμάς και τις οικογένειές μας. Και αυτό έχει κάνει ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ για αυτή τη χώρα. Όσον αφορά τη μετανάστευση, είναι ένα σημαντικό θέμα. Ήρθαμε σε αυτή τη χώρα ως νόμιμοι μετανάστες. Ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ είναι υπέρ της νόμιμης μετανάστευσης. Αυτή τη στιγμή, βλέπουμε σχεδόν 250.000 ανθρώπους να μπαίνουν στα νότια σύνορά μας και δεν έχουμε ιδέα ποιοι είναι.
Αυτό είναι ένα από τα μεγαλύτερα προβλήματα, όχι μόνο λόγω της εθνικής ασφάλειας, όχι μόνο λόγω των ανησυχιών για την απασχόληση και την οικονομική ανάπτυξη, αλλά λόγω του γεγονότος ότι δεν γνωρίζουμε ποιοι είναι αυτοί οι άνθρωποι. Από πού προέρχονται; Τι θέλουν; Έχουν τα συμφέροντά τους στην Αμερική; Δεν το ξέρουμε αυτό. Ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ θα το εξακριβώσει. Και ως Έλληνες, ως μετανάστες που έχουμε έρθει σε αυτή τη χώρα και έχουμε εργαστεί όλες αυτές τις δεκαετίες για να παρέχουμε στις οικογένειές μας μια καλύτερη ζωή, αυτό είναι το μόνο που μπορούμε να ζητήσουμε. Ένα μέρος όπου μπορούμε να νιώθουμε ασφάλεια στην Αμερική. Ένα μέρος όπου προστατεύονται οι δουλειές μας. Και ένα μέρος όπου τα παιδιά μας είναι ασφαλή.
Θέλω να σταθώ στην απάντηση σας γιατί γνωρίζουμε ότι πολλοί Έλληνες έφτασαν παράνομα στις ΗΠΑ. Ορισμένοι από αυτούς εργάστηκαν σκληρά τόσο για τις οικογένειες τους όσο και για τη χώρα που τους φιλοξένησε. Αρά ακόμα και εάν μιλάμε για παράνομους μετανάστες μήπως η ρητορική του Τραμπ ξεπερνά ορισμένες κόκκινες γραμμές;
Ανεξάρτητα από την κυβέρνηση, ακόμα και αν κοιτάξετε τις πολιτικές της κυβέρνησης του Τζο Μπάιντεν, έχουμε πολιτικές για την προστασία των συνόρων. Ανεξάρτητα από το εάν έχουμε αριστερά ή δεξιά, Δημοκρατικούς ή Ρεπουμπλικανούς, είναι δουλειά κάθε προέδρου να γνωρίζει ότι υπάρχει ένα σύστημα (μετανάστευσης) που θα διασφαλίζει ότι οι εισροές στη χώρα μας θα γίνονται με ένα τρόπο προβλέψιμο, (νόμιμα) επιτρεπτό και που μπορούμε να τον επιβάλουμε. Ο Τζο Μπάιντεν δεν το κάνει αυτό.
Ο πρόεδρος Τραμπ θέλει μετανάστευση. Καλεί τον κόσμο να έρθει εδώ και να ξεκινήσει μια νέα ζωή. Νομίζω, λοιπόν, ότι αυτή είναι μια καλή ερώτηση. Γιατί ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ έχει υποσχεθεί ότι θα είναι πρόεδρος για όλους τους ανθρώπους. Και όχι μόνο οι Αμερικανοί, αλλά βλέπουμε τον κόσμο να λέει, πού είναι; Τον θέλουμε πίσω. Ξέρετε, υπάρχει ένας μεγάλος πόλεμος σχεδόν σε κάθε ήπειρο αυτή τη στιγμή. Ο κόσμος δεν είναι καλύτερος από ό,τι ήταν πριν από τέσσερα χρόνια. Έτσι, το πρώτο πράγμα που πρέπει να κάνει ένας πρόεδρος είναι να επιβάλει τις υπάρχουσες πολιτικές. Ξέρει πώς να το κάνει αυτό. Είναι ένας καλός επιχειρηματίας και ανυπομονούμε να τον έχουμε πίσω το 2024.
Μιλώντας για τον κόσμο, ο πρόεδρος Τραμπ «ενθάρρυνε» τη Ρωσία να επιτεθεί στις χώρες του ΝΑΤΟ που δεν εκπληρώνουν τη συμμαχική δέσμευση για αμυντικές δαπάνες της τάξης του 2% του ΑΕΠ. Θα πρέπει οι σύμμαχοι στην Ευρώπη να ανησυχούν για μια ενδεχόμενη επανεκλογή του Τραμπ;
Ο πρόεδρος Τραμπ έχει πει επανειλημμένα ότι ένα ισχυρό ΝΑΤΟ είναι αυτό που χρειαζόμαστε σε αυτόν τον κόσμο. Και είναι αυτό που θέλει και αυτό που πρόκειται να κάνει. Ακούσαμε τα σχόλια του Ντόναλντ Τραμπ. Και αυτά έγιναν γιατί έχουμε κράτη που είναι μέλη στο ΝΑΤΟ αλλά δεν σηκώνουν τα δίκαια βάρη που τους αναλογούν (2% του ΑΕΠ σε αμυντικές δαπάνες). Οι ΗΠΑ συνεισφέρουν σημαντικά στο ΝΑΤΟ. Και ξέρετε ποιος άλλος επίσης συνεισφέρει; Η Ελλάδα που παρέχει το 2%. Αλλά η πλειοψηφία των χωρών μελών του ΝΑΤΟ δεν το κάνει. Και ποιον επηρεάζει αυτό; Επηρεάζει χώρες όπως οι Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες και η Ελλάδα που πληρώνουν το δίκαιο μερίδιό τους.
Άρα, ο Τραμπ θέλει ένα ισχυρό ΝΑΤΟ. Στην πραγματικότητα, το ΝΑΤΟ ήταν ισχυρότερο όταν ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ ήταν πρόεδρος από το 2016 έως το 2020. Τώρα είναι αδύναμο. Και ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ το αντιλαμβάνεται αυτό. Και θέλει ο κόσμος να είναι ένα καλύτερο και ασφαλέστερο μέρος. Και ο τρόπος που το κάνουμε αυτό είναι όταν ενωνόμαστε όλοι μαζί. Έχουμε ήδη έναν υπάρχοντα οργανισμό. Δεν χρειάζεται να δημιουργηθεί μια νέα δομή. Αλλά αυτό που προσπαθεί να πει, είναι ότι εδώ έχουμε μια πολιτική. Έχουμε μια οργάνωση που μπορεί να μας προστατεύει από πολέμους και συγκρούσεις. Το ΝΑΤΟ δεν κάνει τίποτα αυτή τη στιγμή. Έχει περιορισμένη ικανότητα επειδή δεν έχει τους πόρους. Έτσι, εάν ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ ήταν πρόεδρος, θα διασφάλιζε από την πρώτη μέρα ότι τα κράτη μέλη του ΝΑΤΟ θα πληρώνουν το μερίδιο που τους αναλογεί. Και αυτό θα μας κάνει όλους πιο ασφαλείς.
Υπονοείτε, λοιπόν, ότι δεν πρέπει να παίρνουμε τοις μετρητοίς τα λεγόμενα του και ότι ίσως έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια προεκλογική ρητορική;
Ο Τραμπ θέλει ένα ισχυρότερο ΝΑΤΟ και γνωρίζει ότι ο τρόπος για να γίνει αυτό είναι τα μέλη που καρπώνονται τα οφέλη, να βεβαιωθούν ότι πληρώνουν το δίκαιο μερίδιό τους. Επειδή ξέρετε τι; Όταν ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ ήταν πρόεδρος για τέσσερα χρόνια, δεν είχαμε κανένα πόλεμο. Μάλιστα τους σταμάτησε όλους. Και τώρα αυτό έχει αντιστραφεί τελείως.
Μιλάτε σαν να υπονοείτε ότι ο πρόεδρος Μπάιντεν είναι υπεύθυνος για τους πολέμους στην Ουκρανία και το Ισραήλ. Ποιες διαφορετικές κινήσεις θα είχε κάνει ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ για να αποτρέψει αυτές τις συγκρούσεις;
Το προεδρικό ήθος που ήθελε να φέρει ο Ντόναλντ Τραμπ ήταν ένα ήθος ειρήνης. Και αυτό έκανε. Έφερε την ειρήνη μέσω της προβολής ισχύος.
Θυμόμαστε ότι ο Τραμπ διατηρούσε στενή επικοινωνία με τον Ρετζέπ Ταγίπ Ερντογάν και υπήρχε ένα κανάλι επικοινωνίας που είχε ονομαστεί «η διπλωματία των γαμπρών». Πρέπει η Ελλάδα να ανησυχεί για αυτή τη σχέση και πως ευθυγραμμίζεται το πολιτικό δόγμα «Πρώτα η Αμερική» με το Διεθνές Δίκαιο που αποτελεί τη βάση της ελληνικής εξωτερικής πολιτικής;
Ως Ελληνοαμερικανοί ανησυχούμε όλοι για τον Ερντογάν. Και νομίζω ότι είδαμε να συντελείται μια ισχυρή και θεμελιώδη μετατόπιση που ξεκίνησε από τον Ντόναλντ Τραμπ την περίοδο μεταξύ 2016 και 2020. Εάν κοιτάξετε την ιστορία, ανεξάρτητα από το αν ο πρόεδρος ήταν Ρεπουμπλικανός ή Δημοκρατικός, η Τουρκία ήταν πάντα ένας σημαντικός σύμμαχος των ΗΠΑ. Το ίδιο και η Ελλάδα, αλλά υπήρχε πάντα ένα μεγαλύτερο ενδιαφέρον για την Τουρκία. Αυτό άλλαξε κατά την προεδρία του Τραμπ.
