EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). I am absolutely appalled by the pro-Turkish measures of the Mitsotakis Government at the same time as Erdogan is openly talking about Turkish rights in the Aegean, in Cyprus, and everywhere else… But opening a mosque that was closed for 100 years at a time when the Tuks have turned Hagia Sophia (and also Moni Horas) into a mosque in Constantinople blows my mind… How much more treasonous a government can be?
Does anyone in GOARCH or the Federation of NY preparing for this year’s Greek Independence Parade have any “sensitivities” left? Or are they also ready to bow before the Turks as Elpidophoros did, as Greek FM Gerapetritis did, and as Pat. Bartholomew, once again, did recently?
I am not holding my breath…

Thessaloniki: The Geni Mosque opens for Ramadan, for the first time since 1922
The Muslim prayer will be held there on April 10
For the first time since 1922, the Geni Mosque in Thessaloniki opens for the Muslim Ramadan.
The historical monument Geni Mosque is currently used as an exhibition space of the Municipal Gallery and will be opened on April 10 for the Ramadan of the Muslims of Thessaloniki.
The space is allocated for the first time to Muslims for the performance of prayer on the holiday of breaking the fast of Ramadan
The decision was taken by the General Secretariat of Religions while the imam will be chosen by the Greek state. In the relevant announcement of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs it is noted that “the General Secretariat of Religious Affairs wishes the Muslims that the month of Ramadan will be a month of love, charity and good deeds”.
The Geni Mosque as a place of worship in Thessaloniki
The Geni Mosque was built in Thessaloniki in 1902 by the Italian architect Vitaliano Pozelli and served as a place of worship for the converted Jews, the so-called Donmehs (Dönme/Donmeh). After the exchange of populations in 1922, it housed refugees for a short time. Since 1963 it has been used as the city’s archaeological museum, which is why it is also known as the “Old Archaeological Museum”.
The building has two floors and combines the Muslim tradition with the architectural trend of its time (elements of the architectural trend of eclecticism, which the architect used in many of his other buildings, are preserved in the city, such as in the Governorate, the building of the old Philosophical Army House, Villa Allatini, etc.).
In its courtyard, there is a rich collection of marble sculptures from the Roman era and early Christian times (sarcophagi, tombstones, reliefs, honorary and funerary columns, etc.) from all over Thessaloniki.
Where will the Muslim prayer take place in Athens and Rhodes
In Athens the prayer will be held at the Islamic Mosque, in Rhodes at the Suleymaniye Mosque and in Thessaloniki at the Geni Mosque, the old Archaeological Museum, at 30 Archaeological Museum Street.
