In a deeply controversial move that has sparked outrage across Greek Cypriot and Hellenic political circles, members of the Greek-Turkish Forum met on Thursday with Ersin Tatar, the self-styled “President” of the so-called Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) — a regime propped up solely by Turkey since its illegal invasion of Cyprus in 1974.
The meeting took place in occupied Nicosia, within the illegally held northern territory that makes up 37% of the island, where Turkish troops remain in defiance of countless United Nations resolutions and international condemnation. Critics have called the visit a dangerous act of normalization with an entity born of ethnic cleansing, forced displacement, and military aggression.
President Tatar, a vocal advocate of partition and permanent division, used the occasion to push again the Turkish Cypriot demand for a “two-state solution” — an outcome that would legitimize the results of the 1974 invasion and the decades-long occupation that followed.
“This is not dialogue. This is appeasement,” said one senior Greek Cypriot official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “Meeting with Tatar under these conditions undermines the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus and plays directly into Ankara’s expansionist narrative.”
The Greek-Turkish Forum, originally conceived as a bridge-building initiative to ease bilateral tensions between Greece and Turkey, is now being accused of betraying its principles by lending credibility to an unrecognized separatist authority.
Among the most incendiary aspects of the visit was the Forum’s silence on the tens of thousands of Greek Cypriots displaced during the 1974 invasion, and the continued violation of their property and human rights. Reports suggest that issues such as arrests of Greek Cypriots in the north over property transactions were discussed, but no condemnation was issued.
The visit has triggered backlash among Greek Cypriot politicians, civil society leaders, and diaspora groups, many of whom view it as a gross insult to the memory of the invasion’s victims and a slap in the face to decades of international legal consensus on Cyprus.
As of yet, no statement has been issued by the Greek Foreign Ministry or the Republic of Cyprus government, but calls are mounting for a formal rebuke and clarification of Greece’s stance on such informal engagements.
In the words of one critic, “You don’t promote peace by shaking hands with occupation.”
