According to news sources (zougla.gr – see below – and tanea.gr), which Helleniscope has independently verified, the new ambassador of Greece to DC will be Antonis Alexandridis, the current Greek ambassador in Paris. Mr. Alexandridis served as Ambassador to the Philippines (2019), the UAE (2022), and, most recently, in Paris, where he arrived two months ago.
Over several months, the Greek government became entangled in a protracted internal struggle over the selection of its next ambassador to the United States—a position of immense diplomatic and symbolic significance. Initially, the frontrunner was Ioannis Vrailas, Greece’s seasoned ambassador to the European Union in Brussels, widely respected within diplomatic circles for his experience and technocratic competence. However, his candidacy reportedly faced quiet but firm opposition from Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, who is said to have intervened behind the scenes to block the appointment. Although the reasons remain unconfirmed, speculation centered on concerns from the Phanar regarding Vrailas’s stance on ecclesiastical matters or his perceived alignment with factions less sympathetic to the Patriarchate’s pan-Orthodox vision.
Following this unexpected veto, the government briefly floated the name of Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki, a high-profile businesswoman and the former president of the 2004 Athens Olympic Organizing Committee. Her name sparked political and media interest, but also drew internal skepticism, stemming from both her lack of a traditional diplomatic background and the risk of politicizing a key foreign service post. In the intervening weeks, several other names were considered, revealing underlying tensions between the Prime Minister’s office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and influential ecclesiastical and diaspora stakeholders. The drawn-out process exposed the delicate interplay between national diplomacy, Church influence, and elite networks in shaping Greece’s strategic representation abroad.
In the meantime, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has struggled to build substantive channels of communication with the Trump administration, a challenge compounded by the persistent efforts of Archbishop Elpidophoros to position himself as an indispensable intermediary. The Archbishop has repeatedly sought to portray himself both as a kind of “Ethnarch” and as Greece’s de facto lobbyist in Washington, despite well-known concerns about his close ties to Ankara and the Turkish Foreign Ministry. In a particularly controversial move, Elpidophoros criticized the Greek government for spending public funds on a professional lobbying firm in Washington, suggesting instead that he could fulfill that role personally—an assertion that many in Athens viewed as both inappropriate and politically tone-deaf.

Η κυρία Ντόρα Μπακογιάννη ήταν σαφής. Πρέσβης στην Ουάσιγκτον θα τοποθετηθεί ο κ. Γ. Βράϊλας που υπηρετεί στις Βρυξέλλες. Αμ δε! Κάποιοι στην πρωτεύουσα σήκωσαν κεφάλι. Πρέσβης στην Ουάσιγκτον θα τοποθετηθεί η Γιάννα Αγγελοπούλου (εκ προσωπικοτήτων). Για δεύτερη φορά… Αμ δε.
Τελικά, ο πρέσβης Γ. Βράϊλας παραμένει στις Βρυξέλλες και ας είναι έξαλλη η Ντόρα Μπακογιάννη. Η Γιάννα θα μεταβαίνει στην Ουάσιγκτον μόνον ως τουρίστρια. Και πρέσβης στις ΗΠΑ τοποθετείται ο κ. Αλεξανδρίδης, γνωστός διασκεδαστής της διπλωματικής ελίτ των Παρισίων.
Μάλιστα, η φωτογραφία ντοκουμέντο που έχει στα χέρια της η «Ζούγκλα» καταγράφει με άριστο τρόπο τα κρυφά ταλέντα του νέου Έλληνα πρέσβη στην Αμερική. Με στενό κουστουμάκι πάνω σε έκτακτο καρεκλάκι, στρωμένο με λευκή πετσετούλα, εκφωνεί λογύδριο.
Θυμίζει τόσο πολύ εκείνες τις κυρίες, που έντρομες ανεβαίνουν σε καρέκλες όταν εμφανιστεί βλοσυρό ποντικάκι να βολτάρει στα αριστοκρατικά σαλόνια της πόλης του φωτός. Απολαύστε.
