In typical bombastic fashion, Donald Trump has ensured that the newly agreed Zangezur Corridor will bear his personal stamp, renaming it the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP). The name is as grandiose as the political maneuver itself—symbolizing both his appetite for self-promotion and his transactional approach to geopolitics.

On August 8, Armenia and Azerbaijan signed a U.S.-brokered peace deal at the White House, with President Trump personally overseeing the agreement. Central to the deal is the Zangezur Corridor—rebranded as the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP)—which grants the United States exclusive development rights for up to 99 years, with an American company managing the Armenian section. Backed by Turkey and Azerbaijan, the corridor is projected to reshape regional trade and energy flows, potentially unlocking $50–100 billion in Eurasian commerce and lowering energy costs by 10–15%. Externally, Pashinyan cannot ignore Russia. Moscow has operated a massive air force base near Yerevan for decades, and while Russia’s attention is fixed on Ukraine and its western front, the Kremlin retains the ability to cripple Armenian security if it chooses. Turkey may be pleased with the corridor, seeing it as a direct land link to its Turkic allies in Central Asia, and Israel will quietly welcome it, given its long-standing military footprint inside Azerbaijan.

Yet the timing is awkward. Israel, after suffering significant military and strategic blows from Iranian missile attacks in recent months, may find the corridor’s promise of regional leverage far less potent than before. Iran, openly hostile to TRIPP, has vowed to block it through political, economic, and—if necessary—military means, pushing its rival Aras Corridor as an alternative route. With Tehran and Moscow both skeptical and willing to act, the West’s celebration may be premature.

In the end, TRIPP may go down in history less as a triumph of diplomacy and more as an ambitious but overextended gamble—one that could fizzle in the face of entrenched opposition.
