A few hours ago, the United Kingdom’s major sovereign military installation in the Mediterranean, RAF Akrotiri — one of the two British Sovereign Base Areas on Cyprus — experienced explosions and an apparent aerial attack, which multiple international news agencies are describing as a suspected drone strike amid the wider Middle East conflict.
What happened at the base?
Late Sunday night, explosions were heard at the British RAF Akrotiri base in Cyprus.
The UK Ministry of Defence reportedly raised its force protection alert levels and scrambled Royal Air Force aircraft in response, saying the incident involved a suspected drone strike, likely linked to Iranian retaliation following the escalating conflict in the region.
Reports suggest that at least one drone may have struck the airfield, causing minor damage but no confirmed casualties at this stage.
The incident comes as Western and regional forces have been on high alert after significant military operations in the Middle East and Iran’s subsequent counter-attacks involving ballistic missiles and drones. Earlier on Sunday there were reports of Iranian ballistic missiles attacking the British bases in Cyprus.
Statements by Keir Starmer and Christodoulides
In the context of these developments, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer spoke directly with Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides. According to official local statements:
Starmer reassured Christodoulides that Cyprus — including the British military bases on the island — was not the target of Iranian missile strikes.
He emphasized that any missiles fired “in the direction of Cyprus” in recent days were not intentionally aimed at the island itself.
The conversation was part of ongoing bilateral communication as regional tensions escalate and as UK authorities monitor threats and defensive operations.
These clarificatire were ons came after British Defence Secretary John Healey had previously said two ballistic missiles were fired “in the direction of Cyprus” during Iranian retaliation late last week, though it was unclear whether these were deliberately targeted.
Broader military backdrop
The incident unfolds against a backdrop of wider geopolitical tension triggered by a major coordinated U.S.–Israeli strike on Iran, which killed Iran’s Supreme Leader and ignited a series of Iranian missile and drone counter-attacks across the region.
British forces, while not participating directly in offensive operations, have been operating defensively from bases in Cyprus and Qatar — flying sorties to intercept incoming threats as part of allied protective measures.
