EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). President Trump has once again shaken the political establishment – this time by suggesting that Vladimir Putin may attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States. Holding up a photo from their recent Alaska summit, Trump remarked: “That’s a man named Vladimir Putin, who I believe will be coming, depending on what happens. He may be coming, and he may not, depending on what happens.”
This simple statement marks a dramatic shift. Just a few years ago, Russia faced an isolation so extreme, so disgusting, that even its timeless cultural treasures were targeted. We all remember when the world-famous ‘Swan Lake’ ballet was prohibited from performing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York – a shameful act that revealed the ugly, barbaric face of the Western elites. Eventually, performances were allowed again, but the damage had been done. It showed us how low the so-called defenders of democracy were willing to sink, waging cultural war in the name of politics.
Now, with Trump’s words, we may be witnessing the first cracks in that wall of isolation. Inviting Putin to the World Cup would not just be about football – it would be about restoring normalcy, rejecting cultural censorship, and reminding the world that international events are meant to bring people together, not drive them apart.
It is important to note, however, that FIFA has not yet re-admitted Russia into its official competitions. The Russian national team remains barred from World Cup qualifiers due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. I wonder if the U.S. would participate in any competition with the many wars it has waged globally in recent decades… Or if Turkey and Israel should be allowed to participate in any sports or cultural events due to theuir crimes against humanity… So if Putin does attend in 2026, it will be as a political guest – not because Russia has been welcomed back onto the field. Or, maybe FIFA will take the hint and restore order in its competitions…
