Besides, honoring a wartime political leader inside a sacred Orthodox church is a profound mistake no matter how you slice it. Churches exist to point the faithful toward Christ, not to elevate contemporary political figures—regardless of their nationality, popularity, or alliances. When the sanctuary becomes a stage for political symbolism, it risks blurring the distinction between the eternal mission of the Church and the temporary passions of geopolitics. Such ceremonies are not acts of pastoral leadership, but departures from the spiritual neutrality and universality that the Church is called to preserve.
The Church’s highest calling is to preach repentance, reconciliation, and truth—not to reinforce partisan or geopolitical allegiances. Those entrusted with the stewardship of holy places should remember that the credibility of the Church rests not on proximity to political power, but on its unwavering witness to the Gospel.

Absolutely shameless and disgusting. The organizers of this event have missed the example of Jesus who drove the money changers from the temple. The blatant greed from these social climbers stands in contrast to the morals of the Orthodox Church.
The bishops and monks in Ukraine are confessors suffering in prisons or being persecuted in other ways. Contrast the examples of real faith with this hideous event.
Many wrongs in this new soiling of a church at the hands of the anaxioi in leadership position. It’s incredible how they manage, in everything they do, to do the wrong thing and divide the faithful, without being totally transparent or even trying to present justification for using the church’s name in such a partisan gathering.
As Nick says, a church should not celebrate a wartime leader. If that leader deserves recognition, a civic organization should arrange the event. Killing is not and should not be blessed by a church.
Seeing that the seat goes for $1500.00, an amount designed to keep the rif-raf out and the elite swooning, all Greek Orthodox should demand accounting of where the proceeds will be allocated. If any of that money goes towards weapons the event should be boycotted. If it goes towards humanitarian aid, the proceeds should be equally divided between the two combatants. It really requires a special kind of hypocrite and liar to portray the thievery that took place while fundraising for St Nicholas as “light of hope, resilience and faith”. The money stolen with no one spending a day in jail is an everlasting symbol of Godlessness, selfishness and robbery by using the name of God.

With 6 decades (since Vatican 2 & the ceasing of Anathemas) of a major shift in North America’s “Greek Synod” on the massive expansion of “Oikonomia” on who is chrismated vs. baptized, coupled with a “luke-warm” / “relaxed” approach to Catechism, where the new Converts don’t always actually “shed their prior Protestant / Roman Catholic mindsets”, and combined with an equally “luke-warm” approach to training new generations of priests on matters of “defense of dogma”, and tolerance of the heresy of “Syncretism”…where will you find the foundation for any “uprising”? Who exactly has been instructing the priests and laity the last 60 years? (Note: I’ve been trying to find that Greek media article from the 1990s where Bartholomew was quoted as stating that he “believed St. Mark of Ephesos was wrong in not signing the dotted line at Ferrara”…)
The Uniate foundation in GOARCH is being solidified more and more, year over year, and the momentum for a “false Union” with Rome becomes more and more realistic every time we see another Constantinopolitan bishop “kissing the Pope’s hand”, and every time a Cardinal shows up to an Orthodox service (and even “censes the Orthodox faithful), etc…

You can stay in the arena and fight these people who would honor Zelensky, the Jewish persecutor of the faithful Orthodox of Ukraine, but if you choose to leave, there are great options. American has a huge problem, the uncanonical problem of multiple jurisdictions in the same place.
The good news is that in most areas of the world where the canons are observed and there is one bishop in one city, in America where the canons aren’t being observed and there are in some cases, many bishops in one city.
So, when a struggling Orthodox Christian is scandalized by his bishop, he does have options, unlike an Orthodox Christian in a country where there is one set of bishops according to canonical norms.
So, in uncanonical America, if you have a weird bishop, guess what? You have some options. Go to another jurisdiction. They are all in communion with each other, but have a slightly different “flavor”.
For example, the Antiochians have services and music pretty much like the Greeks but in English. The OCA has Slavonic type services, but is the actual autocephalous Orthodox Church of America. ROCOR is very faithful to tradition, and observes a strict ecclesiology. It has strong monastic influences. The Greek Archdiocese is more liberal on issues like LGBQ, abortion, and the boundaries of the Church. Many of the other jurisdictions have their unique characteristics like the Romanian, Bulgarian and Georgian.
Bottom line, don’t fret, there is a jurisdiction here in America that is just for you. You needn’t suffer where you are now. Pick from 14 choices.
