I will attempt to offer a commentary that is, as far as possible, free of emotional commitments and party-political affiliations. I do not belong to any political organization. I am interested, however, in seeing political expression given to the effort—however initially imperfect, contradictory, and chaotic—of an existing social current that has long since rejected Greece’s post-junta political system.

“Hope for Democracy” was not created because a group of citizens decided to revive the direct democracy of ancient Athens, nor because it was preceded by a coherent ideological and policy-development process. It was created because different forms of social disillusionment coalesced around Maria Karystianou: anger over the Tempi disaster and impunity; distrust of the justice system; rejection of the Mitsotakis government; disappointment with the opposition parties; and the sense that institutions function to protect closed mechanisms of power.

For this reason, whether one likes it or not, it remains a “Karystianou party.” Its official name is “Hope for Democracy – Maria Karystianou, Independent Citizens’ Movement,” and the name itself reflects the organizational reality: the leading personality does not merely accompany the organization; she constitutes its identity and its principal political asset.

At its founding presentation, the movement set its sights as high as first place, acknowledging that “to change things, you need power.” Without Maria Karystianou, this particular party would not exist today. That is not a criticism. It is the condition from which it began.

Karystianou as a Political Phenomenon

Maria Karystianou constitutes a contemporary political phenomenon because she did not emerge through the party hierarchy. Her public legitimacy was born outside the professional political arena, through a struggle for justice. Society did not come to know her as a candidate seeking office, but as a mother who confronted a system which, in the view of a large part of public opinion, attempted to manage the Tempi tragedy both politically and in terms of public communications.

This trajectory gave her a kind of moral authority.

Many citizens feel that they have watched and tested her over the course of several years. For this reason, they are not easily influenced by every accusation or personal attack directed against her. Their trust is based primarily not on the details of her political program, but on the consistency they believe she has demonstrated in confronting those in power.

Some may see in her a contemporary version of ancient Greek tragedy: private grief transformed into a public demand for justice. This image helps explain her strength, but it also carries a risk. The moral legitimacy of an individual does not automatically amount to political competence, just as personal tragedy does not grant immunity from democratic scrutiny.

In political theory, the project could be understood as a hybrid between a “movement-party” and a “leader’s party.” The relevant literature points out that, in an age of personalized politics, even collective parties can be transformed into leader-centered parties under the influence of charismatic leadership. Movement-parties, on the other hand, combine social mobilization, anti-system rhetoric, and promises of participation with the unavoidable pursuit of parliamentary power.

Karystianou stands precisely at the center of this contradiction: she wants to express society’s opposition to the party system, yet in order to change that system she must become a party, select candidates, develop a program, and acquire discipline and hierarchy. She cannot forever avoid becoming what she criticizes.

She can only try to organize it differently.

Is It Really a “Post-Post-Political” Formation?

The established term is “post-politics” or the “post-political condition”: the retreat of substantive ideological conflict and its replacement by technocratic management, communications, and a contrived consensus in which no genuine alternatives exist. Theories of the “post-political” describe precisely this closing of the political horizon and the resulting disillusionment with parties that appear to implement variations of the same policies.

Karystianou does not belong to this category. This is why we speak of the Karystianou phenomenon. Political theory needs to study it.

The Karystianou project does not exist beyond politics. On the contrary, it represents the return of political conflict within a society that feels it has been deprived of the right to make meaningful choices.

It is not “post-post-political” because it transcends politics, but because it seeks to repoliticize social anger that had been excluded from the established party channels. A more precise term would be a “post-systemic movement-party”: a project born in the aftermath of citizens’ rupture with the party system, but which has yet to construct a new institutional model.

Ernesto Laclau’s analysis of populism is helpful here. A multitude of different and initially disconnected demands—justice, transparency, dignity, national sovereignty, social protection—can constitute a “people” when they become connected around a common symbol and a common adversary.

In this case, Karystianou functions as the unifying node of a heterogeneous current. Its unity, however, remains fragile, because citizens who agree on what they reject do not necessarily agree on what should be built in its place.

The “Quantum Approach”

The claim that the Karystianou effort requires a “quantum approach” suggests that the project is developing under conditions of uncertainty, multiple possibilities, and social chaos. It cannot be predicted linearly, nor can it be explained with the mechanistic certainty that a particular organizational action will necessarily produce a particular political outcome.

The theory of complex and nonlinear systems is more appropriate. A heterogeneous social movement can indeed undergo unpredictable changes, reach “bifurcation points,” and display great sensitivity to small events. A resignation, an unfortunate statement, or an organizational dispute can produce disproportionately large consequences.

But even within chaos, there are structures and “attractors.” Within “Hope for Democracy,” the strongest attractor is undoubtedly Karystianou herself.

Those who have left the movement did not necessarily hold “deterministic” views. Many were calling for elected rather than appointed bodies, transparency, clearly defined responsibilities, and accountability. These demands do not constitute a mechanistic anachronism. They are elementary democratic safeguards.

The Challenge

The Karystianou party could become one of the critical factors in bringing about political change.

Until the elections, the project will probably continue to revolve around Maria Karystianou. The electoral contest will show whether social trust can be transformed into stable political representation.

The fundamental question, however, is not simply whether Karystianou will survive the departures. She will.

The question is whether she will be able to resolve the fundamental contradiction at the heart of her project: whether she can remain its irreplaceable founding figure while simultaneously creating an organization that does not depend entirely on her will.

Uncertainty is inevitable. Chaos can be creative. Democracy, however, is not a quantum phenomenon. It requires rules, representation, transparency, and institutional checks and balances.

If “Hope for Democracy” succeeds in building these, it may introduce something genuinely new into Greek public life.

August 6, 2026

  1. An excellent and thought-provoking essay. It formulates with great clarity a legitimate thesis about the dangers of charismatic leadership and the need for democratic institutions. But what happens when those institutions themselves have failed or have ceased to serve the society they were created to protect? There are moments in a nation’s history when an exceptional leader is not the danger but the lifeline. History is replete with heroic figures such as this. Greece may well have reached such a moment, and Maria Karystianou may represent precisely that possibility.

And I think there is a deeper question. The word democracy itself contains the word we too often avoid: demos. What happens to democracy when the demos—the historically constituted people from whom it supposedly derives its authority—is losing its identity, its essence, its raison d’être?
Democracy is a means by which a people governs itself. But if that people is gradually losing its cultural memory, cohesion, and continuity, democratic procedure alone cannot save it. Democracy then becomes an illusion – a word concealing the reality of a fragmented polity.

Without a demos conscious of itself, demokratia risks becoming little more than procedure. Greece is a crossroads and needs Maria!

  2. Excellent analysis by Mr. Savidis and Eleni’s commentary. Demos is where everything begins and we should do all that we can to strengthen it.
