Forbes: More Greek Shipowners Become Billionaires Because Of Russian Oil!

EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). Regular readers of Helleniscope are well informed on the way Greek shipowners operate: We have mentioned many times that the word “embargo” (or, in our times, “sanctions”) to them means opportunity.  We have noted that the Greek Revolution of 1821 started with the wealth the Greek shipowners earned a few years earlier, breaking the British embargo against Napoleon on Marseilles.  They repeated the feat many times, most notably with the Iran embargo.  As a result, Greece now gets Iranian oil with “net 90” terms – no other country has this privilege!  And in the sanctions against Russia, we have said that the Martinos Brothers, with a fleet of about 300 ships (mostly oil tankers), were among the leaders. Finally, we have underlined that because of their unique geopolitical “sensitivity,” the shipowners are Greece’s natural ambassadors and diplomats: their interests are the true Greek interests.  And the Greek interests require open seas and open trade with all people. Navigation is the most important “Ecumenical” foundation for Hellenism, (followed by Orthodoxy, Diaspora, and Cultural Heritage).

Forbes journalist Giacomo Tognini started his article “Meet The Greek Shipping Billionaires Getting Rich Off Russian Oil” (link here) with a meeting among a few major Greek shipowners in Vouliagmeni in June 2022, a few months after the Ukraine War started. There, they agreed that this was a disaster for humanity, but they also saw the opportunities. And they acted upon these ideas, eventually becoming billionaires in more significant numbers than before.
