While widely regarded as a reformer and a humble shepherd, Pope Francis’s papacy as the head of the Roman Catholic Church has not been controversy-free or criticism-free. Beneath the universal approbation is a papacy marked by contradictions, ambiguity, and dissatisfaction on both sides of the ideological divide.

1. A Reputation for Ambiguity

Early on, Pope Francis staked out himself as a reformerCriticshowever, say that his papacy has been characterized by ambiguity, not clarity. Teachings like Amoris Laetitia (a book by Pope Francis on family issues published in 2016) polarized theologians and clergymost notably over the question of Communion for remarried and divorced Catholics. His habit of leaving contentious topics up to interpretation, some contendhas planted confusion and division within the Church.

2. Mismanagement of Abuse Scandals

Despite vows of zero tolerance, Pope Franciss track record for addressing sex abuse within the Church is by no means impeccable. His initial defense of Chilean Bishop Juan Barros even after allegations of covering up for abuse sparked global outrage and produced a rare papal apology. Some see it as indicative of a reactive, not leading, response to crisis, where reform follows criticism not institutions’ organic desire to shift.

3. Alienation of Conservative Catholics

Franciss push for an open and merciful Church has led to mounting alienation among conservative Catholics, who see his strategy as a deviation from doctrine uniformity. His restrictions on the Latin Mass, as outlined in Traditionis Custodes, were seen by many as punitive and divisive, fueling further polarization within the Church.

4. Political Overreach and Contradictions

Francis’s forays into political subjects such as climate change, migration, and economic disparity have been embraced by progressives but vilified by traditionalists who see him crossing the spiritual bounds of the papacy. His criticisms of capitalism and Western policy are usually one-sided, with insufficient vilification of authoritarian governments or human rights violations in non-Western societies.

5. Legacy of Inaction

Ultimately, some view Pope Francis’s papacy as an instance of institutional inertia accompanied by rhetorical reform. While his papacy was defined by the language of mercy and inclusion, in realitystructural reform—specifically in areas like Vatican transparency, women’s engagement in the Church, and bishop accountability—has lagged behind.

Pope Francis died of a stroke and irreversible heart failure, Vatican says: Live updates

Cardinal Kevin Farrell, who oversees the pope’s affairs, announced his death from Casa Santa Marta, where Francis lived at the Vatican. A funeral date has not been announced, but the Vatican said it would likely take place between Friday and Sunday.

Francis died of a stroke and irreversible heart failure, Vatican doctor Andrea Arcangeli said in a death certificate released Monday. The certificate, which was published by the Vatican, said the pope had fallen into a coma before his death early that day. The Vatican also said Francis had relayed in a final statement his wishes to be buried at the Basilica of St. Mary Major in Rome.

“Dearest brothers and sisters, with deep sorrow I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis,” Farrell said in a statement on Vatican News. “At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father.”

The pope’s death comes one day after a frail but determined Francis greeted thousands in St. Peter’s Square after Easter Mass in his open-air popemobile − and just weeks after an extended hospital stay during which he battled bilateral pneumonia and other health issues.

The pope, who shunned pomp and privilege and loved to be among the public, sat in a raised chair in the vehicle as people cheered “viva il papa.” He stopped at several places along the square, much to the delight of the crowd.

“His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of His Church,” Farrell said. “He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favor of the poorest and most marginalized. With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of the One and Triune God.”

  1. May the Lord have mercy on his soul

I obviously in no way/shape/form speak for God of course, but, perhaps this was His way of preventing some horrific/scandalous debacle at “Nicea 2025” with Bartholomew who’s “celebration” is a month a way.

And if that was indeed the plan of God Almighty then to that I say, Glory to God for all things.

Between the death of Francis, the Ukrainian war loss and the loss of Bartholomew’s prestige in the Orthodox world vis-a-vis Ukraine, his Unia plans seems to be thwarted by God at every turn

    • It’s not just the Nicea fiasco that isn’t going to happen…what happened to the several years of planning to do something “jointly” on a “common Paschal date”? Oops…

The ancient Greeks had a wise saying that applies here…

“Αλλαι μεν βουλαι ανθρωπων, αλλα δε Θεος κελευει…”

  2. G O O D R I D D A N C E ‼️

I knew instantly when this pathetic Pope got chosen he’d be a massive embarrassment …
    Francis was a double talker;
I recall listening to far superior cardinals + they could speak English too —
    why the yahoo Francis??

  3. I think the only orthodox that will miss the pope is Patr. Barto since his plans fell apart. Glory be to God, He knows what He is doing!

  4. Here is what I will always remember from this Pope’s legacy….

    1) how God responded to his “holy prayers for peace” in the Uniate-infested Ukraine, back in 2014, after that coup…

    2) how Francis’ positions resulted in a significant spike in Cathechumens in several Orthodox jurisdictions in N. America

    • Yes, he was a good pope. He turned catholics to the true Orthodox Church. We have several catholics that converted to Orthodoxy in our Church in the last few years of his reign.

  5. Double good riddance!! May God have mercy on his soul. Bart better be paying attention and on his knees repenting.

    A scandalous legacy indeed.
