EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). I was happily surprised at the news today (discussed extensively at the video below by the “Two Alexes” – Alex Christophorou and Alexander Mercuris of the “Duran”), regarding the ominous signs of a coming collision between Russia and Turkey.
For viewers familiar with Greek Orthodox tradition, this discussion about Turkey, Russia and control of the Bosporus Straits may recall a remarkable body of prophecies attributed to Saint Kosmas of Aetolia (Kosmas o Aitolos), Saint Paisios of Mount Athos, and other Orthodox elders.
Saint Kosmas, who lived under Ottoman rule in the 18th century, is traditionally credited with a series of prophecies concerning a future great war, the fate of the Turks and Constantinople. Among the best-known sayings attributed to him is that the Turks would advance as far as “Hexamilia” — the “six miles” — before eventually being driven back, together with warnings of enormous bloodshed in Constantinople during a future conflict.
It is important, however, to distinguish these sayings from later prophetic traditions. The commonly published prophecies of Saint Kosmas do not specifically state that Turkey will close the Bosporus and that Russia will then attack Turkey.
That more specific Russia–Turkey scenario is associated particularly with prophecies attributed to Saint Paisios, who is reported to have foretold a future war between Russia and Turkey, ultimately involving Constantinople and a decisive Russian victory.
There is another curious dimension to these prophecies.
Greek press reports going back to 2012 claimed that the CIA itself had taken an interest in the prophecies attributed to Elder Paisios. According to those reports, the Agency had established a classified group of analysts tasked with examining prophetic traditions from different religions and regions of the world, with the sayings of Elder Paisios reportedly among the material being studied.
There is an even more striking version preserved in modern Cypriot Orthodox circles. In 2019, Metropolitan Neophytos of Morphou publicly related a prophecy he attributed to Elder Theodoros of Crete: that after Erdoğan, a succeeding Turkish government would close the Bosporus Straits, angering Russia and provoking a Russian military attack on Turkey.
Against that background, the present discussion over Turkey restricting maritime access, Russia’s position in the Black Sea, and the strategic importance of the Straits inevitably carries an additional historical and religious resonance for those familiar with these traditions.
These accounts are presented here as historical and religious context, not as verified predictions of future events. Many were transmitted through disciples, oral recollections and later publications, and the precise wording and authenticity of individual geopolitical prophecies remain subjects of debate even within Orthodox circles.
FOR NOW LET’S STICK WITH THE NEWS AND THE GEOPOLITICAL FACTS. ENJOY!

St. Paisios foresaw that Russia would be victorious over Turkey, but that Russia would then ultimately be forced to withdraw. The prophecies point out that Constantinople will become Greek again with a Christian emperor. Elder Joseph of Vatopedi also foresaw these things:

You are correct… However, my question is that with the current traitors of Hellenism in Athens and in Constantinople, this prophecy would be impossible to materialize… So I am curious to see what kind of new leadership will emerge…
If the prophecies materialize soon, then Patriarch Bartholomew may very well receive the crown of martyrdom if he is killed by a Russian military at war with Turkey. May God give him such strength.
He is very feeble in faith, character and everything else that measures a leader – so keep your hopes low… And the Russians (along with the Turks and the Americans) have a thick file on him containing all his past sins and trespasses… Since he was a young student at Halki – where he first showed his true colors… A camel has better chances to go through a needle than Bartholomew achieving any resemblance of glory…
Joseph,
Please entertain us by trying to describe the story of one martyr or saint of the Church that perpetrated a Schism as great as the “Ukrainian tomos” Schism has manifested (without repenting prior to the end of his life), and who has also violated as many Canons as Bartholomew has… Remember that there are several names of former Schism-inducing clergy that are not even used today, because of the stigma they carry (Nestorius, Arius, etc)…in the future, the name Bartholomew might also be avoided like the plague after the current Patriarch’s track record of promoting Schism and the Uniate agenda like no other in recent history…
And even if there is a military event that ends up with a tragedy you speculate, and even BEFORE any conclusions could be made about “crowns of martyrdom”… the first question would be whether God would view such a “Schism-perpetrator” as belonging to the category of the “unrepentant priests of Baal” who Prophet Elijah “removed” from their positions in the well-known Old Testament excerpt. Actually, the same 1997 publication I referenced above quotes St. Paisios speaks about the “future cleansing of the Church” and Prophet Elias in the same paragraph…feel free to read up on that quote…
And finally, in the opinion of certain well-respected spiritual Fathers in contemporary Greece (on the general subject of the spiritual fate/end of corrupt clergy), there is another important detail that is critical in determining who is qualified to receive a “crown of martyrdom”… classification or not of sainthood / martyrdom would also depend on “which end” the soul exits from at the time when the Archangel shows up with his sword…There are several accounts in various “Gerontika” of sulfur / septic-like scents emanating from certain individuals on their death beds…. Saints, on the other hand, tend to emanate fragrance and myrrh…
Joseph,
You are leaving out the details about the cleansing of corrupt Church leaders…a 1997 publication quotes St. Paisios describing the ousting of monastics, clergy, and even Patriarchs who won’t be deemed worthy when the events you allude to manifest….
It is true…one of the last unfulfilled Prophesies of St. Kosmas (right after the quote about Examilia), actually reads as follows:
…in the end 1/3 of the Turks will be killed, 1/3 will be baptized, and 1/3 will go beyond “Kokkini Milia” (they say that’s somewhere in the area of Ankara)…we know that at least 1/3 of the population is Kurdish, so that geographic distinction kind of make sense with a modern perspective…
But he also said…”there will be so much bloodshed in Constantinople, that a 3-year old calf will drown”…
The Ukrainian conflict will look like an elementary school cafeteria fight in comparison…this builds upon an older prophesy from inscriptions on the Royal tombs of the Byzantine empire (See the 1997 publication of prophesies concerning the End Times by Elder Joseph of Vatopedi), that explicitly reference the “blond genus / race” that will descend from the north upon Constantinople…did “blond genus” refer to the Russians, and will the trigger be the Bosporus straits?
30 years ago, during the reign of Tansu Ciller (prime minister of Turkey), there was an incident where the Turks attempted to close the Bosphorus straits to ships above a certain “tonnage”, which conveniently included most of Russia’s Black Sea fleet…Tansu Ciller was called to visit Moscow for a couple of days, and upon her return, that idea was never mentioned again….but those were also the days when the Turks decided to amass troops on the border with Armenia, because of the Nagorno-Karabah conflict, and on the Greek News they mentioned the Russian General who warned the Turks if they set one foot into Armenia, that would be their end….the troops were pulled back, of course…
Why do we like to forget these finer details of history?
But more importantly, on our topic….for those familiar with the details, the Bosporus straits can “legally” be closed ONLY in the event the Turks are in a state of war. It is unlikely they would start a war to the North, so the most convenient option is to turn a future “hot incident” into a wider declaration of war against a fellow NATO neighbor (because conveniently two NATO countries would presumably agree to sacrifice some soldiers, civilians, and maybe islands for the “greater good” of NATO)…
But which Greek government official would ever knowingly betray the Greek people and the history of the land and “agree to relinquishing sovereign rights”? That never happens, does it? That’s why there is a turkish flag flying in Asia Minor after 1922 and Ammohostos Cyprus after 1974, no Greek flag flying on Imia these days, and Albanians asking for citizenship in Greece while in Northern Epirus Greeks are being thrown in jail, years after the traitor Papoulias signed the WW2 ceasefire with Albania back in 1985, right (The Greek military had every legal right to cross that border up until 1985, because the state of war was still valid, believe it or not)?
And who remembers this disgusting, treasonous “Kodak moment” to remember, from 2005, where the head of parliament officially “informed” the new President that during his tenure he was to “expect a relinquishing of sovereignty in the interest of peace” :

We see the marionettes…but so did St. Kosmas 250 years earlier…and others centuries before him…Much of what of what he said was a new layer of detail, an elaboration on even older prophesies from centuries before… But Prophesy doesn’t manifest just because God reveals future happenings to his saints, (aka just because God “says so”), but because God knows ahead of time the STUPID DECISIONS THAT PEOPLE WILL MAKE…
Good times. Not.
I see the war against Turkey coming from the south (i.e. Israel).
Israel – despite having a far superior air force – will never attack Turkey on its own. Israel’s plan has always been to have others fight its wars. It now has many “agents” in Greece and Cyprus and its main goal in the region is to have Greece and Cyprus start a pre-emptive war against Turkey. It might succeed.
