Michael’s commentary is only partially correct. The Evangelical movement is 100% pro-Israel and pro-war, but the reasons Michael cites are not accurate. The primary driving factor for this seemingly unusual “spiritual” alliance between Evangelical doctrine and Israeli policy is a persistence of Evangelical doctrine in incorrect interpretations of the following (select) key Biblical passages (while ignoring other passages that contrast their misinterpretation):

1) Ephesians 2:8-9 has been misinterpreted since the days of Martin Luther’s Reformation into a strange heretical mindset, resulting in the majority of Protestants believing that they are “already Saved”, compared to the long-standing teaching of the Orthodox Church that reminds us of Matthew 24:13 ο δε υπομεινας εις τελος ουτος σωθησεται (the one who endures to the end will be saved), and many other passages that show life-long Repentance is paramount to Salvation, and not just a “moment in time”, as the Protestants believe. Interestingly enough though, when you ask them if St. Peter was “Saved” at the moment that he denied Christ 3 times, or if Judas was “already Saved and immune to damnation” just because he was a Disciple once upon a time prior to his betrayal, usually Protestants “short-circuit” and walk away from the discussion…

2) Given the above belief that they are already Saved, a large number of Protestants through their ego believed that they cold “accelerate” the 2nd Coming of Christ, (after all “if I am saved, why should I wait”?) because they have misinterpreted 1 Thessalonians 13-17 (the so-called “Rapture” verse”), as a moment of “supreme honor”…that they alone will survive the Antichrist and will be “taken up alive in the clouds” by their Savior. It’s almost as if they feel “worthy of their own Ascension”, in a way… spiritual hubris to the nth degree, folks…

They really believe that they can “accelerate” the 2nd coming of Christ, which as various Orthodox prophesies of the past stipulate would require the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, and misinterpreting these prophesies as well, the Evangelicals are fully supportive of destroying the muslim structure that is currently built there, and standing with Israel to rebuild the Temple Mount. As a result, the past 60 years have yielded an incremental movement of Financial and moral support towards this cause, from the Evangelical ranks who believe that they can influence what God had once said about the 2nd coming “nobody knows the hour…”, etc…Of course, Israel has no problem with this beneficial alliance and “carte blanche” support.

Either way, the Orthodox position is not aligned with this kind of belief, that we have the power to “accelerate” the 2nd Coming of Christ in this manner. Unfortunately, peace in the Middle East is not going to occur as long as the Evangelical Protestants keep interpreting the above two key Biblical verses the way they do. That is currently their dogma, and they are quite fanatical about it.
