Marriage of same-sex couples: Emergency Meeting of the Holy Synod on Tuesday, January 23
The meeting will take place after the public reactions of several metropolitans
The Holy Synod of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece will meet in an extraordinary session on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at 9 am, under the Presidency of His Beatitude Archbishop of Athens and All Greece, Mr. Ieronymos.
The meeting of the Holy Synod will take place in the Synodical Palace in Athens with a unique topic of discussion: “Church and the establishment of marriage between persons of the same sex”, according to the relevant announcement.
The reason was the reactions, which have been expressed publicly in the last few days by several metropolitans, against the bill for same-sex couples. In fact, some of them had requested that the hierarchy be convened so that all 81 hierarchs could be placed on the matter.

Σε έκτακτη Συνεδρία συνέρχεται την Τρίτη 23 Ιανουαρίου 2024, στις 9 το πρωί, η Ιερά Σύνοδος της Ιεραρχίας της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος υπό την Προεδρία του Μακαριωτάτου Αρχιεπισκόπου Αθηνών και πάσης Ελλάδος κ. Ιερωνύμου.
Η συνεδρίαση της Ιεράς Συνόδου θα γίνει στο εν Αθήναις Συνοδικό Μέγαρο με μoναδικό θέμα συζητήσεως: «Εκκλησία και θέσπιση γάμου μεταξύ ατόμων του ιδίου φύλου», σύμφωνα με τη σχετική ανακοίνωση.
Αφορμή στάθηκαν οι αντιδράσεις, οι οποίες έχουν διατυπωθεί δημοσίως τις τελευταίες ημέρες από αρκετούς μητροπολίτες, ενάντια στο νομοσχέδιο για τα ομόφυλα ζευγάρια. Μάλιστα, ορισμένοι από αυτούς, είχαν ζητήσει να συγκληθεί η ιεραρχία ώστε να τοποθετηθούν επί του θέματος και οι 81 ιεράρχες.

A loud NO? I pray!
But how can they say NO when Greek politicians are majority leftists?
And many Hierarchs so weak?
It looks like the great majority of hierarchs are very vocal about their opposition to same-sex marriage. They have the same or bigger problem than the New Democracy politicians: the people below, their constituents, are demanding action..
If the Hierarchs are vocal, they should:
a) demand a referendum
b) vote in the Synod to authorize collection of signatures the same way Christodoulos did for the I.D. issue.
c) if “a” & “b” fail, each hierarch should collect signatures in his own metropolis, and thus shed “the light of shame” upon the hierarchs who don’t, so that the faithful can “address” them appropriately going forward…
Simply raising a voice while “winking” to Mitsotakis on the side is quite hypocritical. If you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen…any “chickens” can resign in order to give way to others who can act…immediately.
To think Greece used to be a devout Christian country now has shameful Mitsotakis brainwashing the Archbishop of Greece no doubt
but at least majority Holy Synod is against the travesty
