I wouldn’t have noticed this article of January 5, 2024, by the Orthodox Times (link here – and you can read below), because I usually do not read even the titles of this website. Why? Because I knew for several years that the State Department financially supports them. The only reason anyone would bother reading anything they write would be to see what issues are being promoted by the American Deep State and one of its main operatives, Amb. Geoffrey Pyatt, in their failing plan to destroy Orthodoxy. In 2018-19, they received a $100,000 grant from the State Department “to counter entities spreading fake news and misguiding believers in Orthodox communities…” (please link here or read below the eye-popping report by Orthochristian).
Helleniscope has referred to Geoffrey Pyatt numerous times, especially his countless visits to Mount Athos to push the Monasteries to support the “Cacocephaly” in Ukraine and, in general, to turn them against Russia and, in the process, destroy Orthodox Unity. He managed to cause the Schism in Orthodoxy by using Karloutsos and Pat. Bartholomew. But recent events prove that the rest of his efforts – including the “Cacocephaly” project in Ukraine – failed miserably: Mt. Athos and most Orthodox Churches disapprove of the Ukrainian schismatics (including such giants of Orthodoxy as AB Anastasios of Albania and Met. Nikolaos of Mesogaias). So Pyatt and his friends in the Orthodox Times (the English version of “Romfea” – the ecclesiastical news agency) must be going through some tough times now and seriously self-reflecting. I completely understand their frustration…
But yesterday, friends sent me photos and links to the article mentioned above, which closes as follows: “Perhaps it’s time for the Three Stooges of the Greek diaspora—Ant. Diamataris, Th. Kalmoukos, and the third overzealous bully-blogger — to reflect on their fixation with the Archbishop. This obsession might require a psychiatric inquiry.”
The “Pyatt Puppets” of the Orthodox Times spent their effort attacking Diamataris and Kalmoukos of TNH because they emphasized the rejection of Elpidophoros by the monastic community of Athos. Someone would have many reasons to disagree with these two TNH figures. Helleniscope explained these reasons quite thoroughly in an article last week (link here): In essence, TNH, by an opinion piece by Diamataris and a main editorial yesterday, supported “same-sex marriage” legislation to be introduced by the newspaper’s ally and benefactor Mitsotakis... TNH spent the main editorial this weekend in a desperate effort to support the “same-sex” legislation by Mitsotakis. More than 3/4 of this lengthy editorial is a disorientation effort to the role of the “surrogate mother.” The hapless editorialist, totally ignorant of basic (legal) facts, doesn’t (want to) understand that the “surrogate mother’s” role will be imposed on Greece by EU laws and the ability to use a surrogate mother in other countries, European or not… (link here).
Why the “Pyatt Puppets” of Orthodox Times are against TNH is incomprehensible. They are both in agreement in general on issues of homosexuality; they are both “progressive” on other social issues; they have both been Biden supporters for a long time (although now the “rats will start jumping out of the sinking boat”) and, above all, they are both supporters of the Deep State. They are literally or metaphorically in the pocket of the State Department!! For example, TNH has never written against State Department operative Karloutsos ONE WORD during the last five decades!! Where is the real issue? Please, both sides, try to find a symbiotic way!! Money from the State Department or the Mitsotakis Government will be coming for both of you!! Don’t be so impatient and greedy…
As for the actual news and communications game, both of you have lost this!! The Greek American community knows who is telling the truth and who is independent!! And it is not you!! Helleniscope is one of the few sources of independent news and commentary in the community! We do not expect to get financing from anyone except our readers!!
But in the end, both the Orthodox Times and TNH lack the natural talent for news and analysis – they are mind-numb puppets of other interests, their puppet masters. It shows when they picked the nickname “overzealous bully-blogger” to apparently describe yours truly… Are you guys in your right mind? Are you trying to compete on nicknaming with someone who has coined “Elpidoktonos” for the Archbishop on the day of his election? Or the “Prince of Darkness” for Karloutsos? Or, “Cacocephaly of Ukraine” – and so many others? Please look in the mirror and refrain from publicly ridiculing yourselves by displaying your ineptness… The very apt nicknames I coined over the years, “Elpidoktonos,” “Prince of Darkness,” “Cacocephaly,” and all the rest are already – and will remain forever – part of GOA and our community’s history…
While the nickname “overzealous bully-blogger” is a badge of honor for Helleniscope!! And it will be permanently used in our fundraising efforts!!
PS. I spent some time last night laughing and debating with our good friend George Michalopulos of Monomakhos.com on how to use overzealous bully-blogger”… I proposed joint use of the name – he insisted that his Stooge name should be “Curly”… I fully expect that Sotiris Tzoumas of exapsalmos.gr and others (there are many “overzealous critics” of Elpidoktonos recently), would also want the honors…

One of my first research papers on my way to my graduate degrees in Social Sciences was about the practice of “Nicknaming in Mediterranean Societies.” Not only do I understand the issue in detail, but I lived my first 24 years in Pireaus, where nicknaming was part of everyday life… (Nicknaming takes place everywhere- and Donald Trump is one of the best name givers as we all know… but there is something special in the Mediterranean…) Instead of competing with me, please get in touch for a few lessons. The Three Stooges of journalism and the obsession with Archbishop Elpidophoros

Take Th. Kalmoukos, someone who dreamt of ordination by Archbishop Iakovos but found himself without having being ordained, wielding a (supposedly) journalistic pen instead. His perception of things appears vastly different. And when a… publication’s bank account starts drying up due to lack of subscriptions, suddenly, the skeletons of the ancestors of Muhammad the Besieger could be unearthed to convince us that something is going on in the Archdiocese of America.
The recent “uncovering” by the National Herald suggests Archbishop Elpidophoros is persona non grata on Mount Athos. Yet, after a clear read of the Athonite community’s announcement, we understand what they say right away: they talk about the baptism of an infant and what “messages” it sends to the Orthodox world.
We will analyze the timing of this “leaked” letter shortly. What exactly are they implying? Is a clergyman not duty-bound to baptize an infant? Imagine the “SYRIZA – Progressive Alliance” party’s leader, Stephanos Kaselakis, seeking baptism for his child and being denied by a Patriarch or Archbishop. Would one do such a thing? Clearly not.
Whether some like it or not, the Archbishop of America will make his second pilgrimage to Mount Athos, a place he’s frequented since his student days as a layman. Thankfully, reputable Greek media steered clear of such “news,” being able to discern expediency.
For the sake of clarity and in order not to confuse Ant. Diamataris’ employee, let’s address two unshakable facts, no matter how disturbing they may be: the Archbishop will officiate in two Athonite monasteries, and he’ll address as a keynote speaker the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece on Holocaust Remembrance Day—which is not an Israeli… union.
Perhaps it’s time for the Three Stooges of the Greek diaspora—Ant. Diamataris, Th. Kalmoukos, and the third overzealous bully-blogger—to reflect on their fixation with the Archbishop. This obsession might require a psychiatric inquiry.

ORTHODOX TIMES WEBSITE RECEIVED $100,000 GRANT FROM U.S. STATE DEPARTMENT

The Orthodox Times outlet began as the English edition of the widely-read Greek Orthodox outlet Romfea in late December last year, with its official launch in January of this year, with the backing of the U.S. government.
In February, the outlet reported that U.S. Ambassador to Greece Geoffrey Pyatt met with its editorial team, after which the Ambassador tweeted: “Enjoyed meeting the @RomfeaNews team. We are excited @StateDept provided support for the launch of this meaningful effort to strengthen the free press, fight disinformation, & highlight the values we share with Orthodoxy and the Ecumenical Patriarch.”
According to the official U.S. government website USASPENDING.gov, this support came in the form of a $100,000 grant.
The grant covered the period of October 1, 2018 to October 31, 2019, and was awarded “TO COUNTER ENTITIES SPREADING FAKE NEWS & MISGUIDING BELIEVERS IN ORTHODOX COMMUNITIES BY MONITORING MEDIA & EXPANDING REACH OF NEWS PORTAL ROMFEA.GR.”

Orthodox Times was initially known as Romfea News, as reflected in Ambassador Pyatt’s tweet.
The funds were granted by the Department of State to the World Media Orthodox Network Private Company. According to Orthodox Times’ “About Us” page, “The Portal is owned by World Media Orthodox Network.”
The administrative agency for the grant is the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs of the State Department, and falls under the category “19.878: EUR-OTHER,” whose “primary goal is to promote democratic and free market transitions in the former communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe and Eurasia, enabling them to overcome their past and become reliable, productive members of the Euro-Atlantic community of Western democracies.”
The U.S. State Department has also been open about its support for Patriarch Bartholomew’s creation of the “Orthodox Church of Ukraine,” and “Metropolitan” Epiphany Dumenko personally thanked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for the U.S.’s support in the creation of the OCU.
Although the period of the grant ended on October 31, 2019, World Media Orthodox Network Private Company also has an entry on the government “System for Award Management” website showing that the company is registered from 6/14/2019 to 6/12/2020, with its purpose of registration listed as “Federal Assistance Awards Only.”

Ambassador Pyatt is a well-known anti-Russian agitator. Having previously served as Ambassador to Ukraine, he was instrumental in organizing 2014’s Maidan revolution. As Ambassador to Greece, he has continued such activities, meeting with prominent figures in the Greek Orthodox world, including Patriarch Bartholomew several times, Metropolitan Hierotheos (Vlachos), Abbot Ephraim of Vatopaidi Monastery on Mt. Athos, and Archbishop Ieronymos.
He has been described as a “Russian hate figure,” and has openly accused the Russian Church of attempting to undermine the role of the Patriarch of Constantinople.

I was not aware of this fact, that the U.S. Department of State funded an Orthodox blog that disseminates controversial positions that divide us. As one who does not buy into “deep state” fear mongering, I am shocked. As a proud US-born American, I am horrified. Pyatt has given the populists credibility. His mingling in our church’s internal affairs is more than troubling. He is playing us on a world-stage chess board and treating us like the buffoons we are.

I have been writing about Pyatt’s games in Ukraine and in Mt.Athos for at least 6 years and was among the first to bring to the attention the “Clash of Civilizations” book by Samuel Huntington (published in the 1990s) – which forms the theoretical basis for the Deep State’s atrocities in Ukraine. Over 1 miliion casualties from both sides so far!! Now even the “theologian” Kalmoukos of TNH managed to read (part of) the book… In page 37 of this book it is described with amazing accuracy what we saw the last few years in Ukraine…Our credibility has been built over a long time… But it’s not about credibility anymore; it’s about action, if we want to keep being proud of this wonderful country we all call home… Pyatt was personally involved (along with Victoria Nuland) in the coup d’etat in Kiev in 2014 where CIA agents assassinated many and overthrew the legally elected government. The years after they started killing the Russophones of the Eastern Ukraine by the thousands. As it stands in Ukraine now elections are banned, opposition parties are banned, Russian language is banned and the canonuical Church followed by the 70% of the ukrainians before the war is also outlawed. But Pyatt calls this a “democracy”.
