EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). That’s a cool detail — and it’s true, sort of. The Evzones, Greece’s elite ceremonial guards who stand at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens, are known for their incredibly disciplined, motionless stance. But on Holy Friday (Good Friday), during Orthodox Easter, there’s a rare and symbolic shift: they lower their rifles and stand in a position of mourning to honor the burial of Christ. It’s one of the only times they alter their typically upright, motionless posture, and it’s deeply respected by Greeks and visitors alike. Pretty powerful moment when you witness it.
