Although this story appeared in January of this year, it now circulates again on social media, stirring up curiosity.

In early 2025, a transgender man in Greece sued a Mount Athos monk, Elder Philimon, over a public speech in which the monk allegedly disclosed personal and sensitive details about the man’s gender transition without consent.

Key Details:

  • Who is involved:

    • Plaintiff: A transgender man whose identity was partially revealed in the speech.

    • Defendant: Elder Philimon, a monk from the Skete of Prophet Elias on Mount Athos, a male-only monastic community.

  • Incident:
Elder Philimon, while speaking at a public Orthodox Church event called “DIMITRIA” in Athens, discussed the man’s transition in detail, including:

    • His previous name

    • Surgical procedures performed in Turkey

    • His university education

  • Legal claims:

    • Civil: The man is suing for €100,000 (~$104,000) in damages, citing emotional distress and violation of privacy.

    • Criminal: He also filed a criminal complaint for breach of personal data and hate speech.

  • Broader context:

    • Greece passed a Gender Identity Law in 2017, allowing individuals to change their gender legally without undergoing surgery.

    • Mount Athos remains deeply traditional and conservative, banning women and maintaining strict Orthodox Christian rules.

This case has sparked national debate in Greece over the clash between religious conservatism and transgender rights, especially in light of privacy laws and evolving LGBTQ+ protections.

===========

The legal action was prompted by a public speech delivered by Elder Philimon at the “DIMITRIA” event at the Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Demetrius in Athens. During this speech, the monk recounted a conversation with the man’s father, disclosing personal details about the individual’s gender transition, including his former name, medical procedures undertaken in Turkey, and his educational background. These remarks were made in a critical tone and were subsequently published on the church’s YouTube channel, amplifying their reach .

The plaintiff is seeking €100,000 (approximately $104,000 USD) in damages, citing emotional distress caused by the public disclosure of his private life. This case has ignited a broader debate in Greece, highlighting the tension between traditional Orthodox Christian values and the country’s evolving legal framework supporting transgender rights. Notably, Greece’s 2017 Gender Identity Law allows individuals to legally change their gender without requiring medical interventions, reflecting a shift towards greater recognition of transgender individuals’ rights .

  1. FREE SPEECH…
Enough already with sexual deviants whining about me me me! Only proves they’re a curse on society.
May God protect Monk Philimon & all the monks of Athos from this scourge.

    • Greece never actually had the concept of “free speech” in the same sense that it is protected in the US Constitution…

  2. The leaders of Greece are part of the globalist cabal creating chaos in the world to build their Tower of Babel. Buckle up! Put on the armor of Christ! The battle is raging!

“Notably, Greece’s 2017 Gender Identity Law allows individuals to legally change their gender without requiring medical interventions, reflecting a shift towards greater recognition of transgender individuals’ rights.”

  3. It was probably not necessary to disclose the “guy’s” full name. Big mistake. He may get convicted of the privacy violation.

However, the “hate speech” side of the suit is far more problematic. The boundaries between religious freedom and EU atheist “religion” being imposed upon the clergy and monastic community are going to be tested like never before by this case…depending on how this goes (how many technocrats / atheists are sitting the judging panel and eventually the appellate court system), the judgement could constitute a large percentage of ecclesiastical material as “hate speech”, which is exactly where these atheists want to go with it…

However, the largest strategic mistake here is that Mt. Athos has not put its foot down to determine what Greek Laws it is subject too, and what “semi-autonomous region of Greece” really means under the Greek Constitution. I personally do NOT believe that “all secular Greek civil law” automatically applies to Mt. Athos monks, when examined under the proper definition of of “semi-autonomous region of Greece”. The Ιερα Επιστασια governing council of Mt. Athos has been totally “sleeping” for years on this matter. On multiple fronts, both the Greek as well as the EU governments have been encroaching on Mt. Athos’ rights to “semi-autonomy” for decades now…The Ecumenical Patriarchate did a LOT of damage on this front, taking Esphigmenou to the Greek Court system multiple times over the years, setting dangerous precedent, and eroding the concept of “semi-autonomy” along the way…all because of one man’s (who should be an example of humility) big EGO…
