Greek-Owned Ship Sunk in Red Sea by Houthi Attack – Crew Killed, Others Taken Hostage

A Greek-owned cargo ship has been attacked and sunk in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels, resulting in the death of at least three crew members, injuries to others, and the kidnapping of surviving seafarers, according to official sources and international maritime security reports.

The vessel, Eternity C, sailing under a Liberian flag and owned by a Greek shipping company, was targeted on Sunday, July 7th, near the Yemeni coast. The ship was reportedly hit by drones, missiles, and fast attack boats, then boarded by Houthi fighters who planted additional explosives onboard.

“The ship sustained catastrophic damage. Survivors were seen abandoning ship as fires raged on the main deck,” a senior EU maritime official stated.

“We demand the immediate and unconditional release of the kidnapped sailors,” said the U.S. mission in Sana’a. “These are innocent civilians.”

Greek Response

Greece’s Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy expressed deep concern and held emergency talks with NATO and EU allies. Officials emphasized the critical role that Greek-owned vessels play in global shipping — and the unacceptable nature of such attacks on civilian trade.

A senior ministry spokesperson noted:

“These attacks endanger not only human lives but the stability of international trade routes. Greece calls for coordinated naval protection in high-risk zones like the Red Sea.”

A Pattern of Escalation

The attack on Eternity C comes just one day after another Greek-owned vessel, the Magic Seas, was also struck and ultimately sunk. That ship’s crew managed to evacuate safely.

These attacks mark the deadliest escalation in the Red Sea since the ceasefire collapsed in May 2025. Experts warn that shipping lines through the Suez Canal and Bab el-Mandeb Strait could face long-term rerouting, causing higher costs and delays.
