Six months and counting—still no U.S. Ambassador in Athens.
Despite clearing the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on July 9, Kimberly Guilfoyle’s nomination as U.S. Ambassador to Greece remains stalled. The cause? Senate gridlock, pure and simple. A broader standoff over aid and political appointments has paralyzed the process, with over 30 nominees caught in the crossfire. The Senate recessed without action, kicking the decision into September at the earliest [1].
This is not just a delay. It’s a strategic setback for Greece.
Why It Matters
With Maria Olson acting as Chargé d’Affaires, the U.S. mission in Athens lacks ambassadorial weight. This hinders:
Defense collaboration under the U.S.–Greece MDCA.
Critical energy partnerships in the Eastern Med.
Regional diplomacy with Israel, Egypt, and Cyprus.
As Greece hosts major U.S. military installations and leads NATO in defense spending [5], the absence of formal representation is more than symbolic—it’s insulting.
Guilfoyle’s Nomination: A Casualty of D.C. Infighting
While some question Guilfoyle’s diplomatic credentials [6], the delay is not about her résumé—it’s about leverage. Senate Democrats are holding confirmations to extract concessions on domestic legislation. Trump’s attacks on Chuck Schumer only deepened the rift [1].
Greece, meanwhile, is left on hold.
Strategic Consequences for Greece
Weak voice in Washington at a time of Turkish posturing and energy realignments.
Stalled initiatives that require ambassadorial leadership.
Signals of neglect to allies and adversaries alike.
Final Word
The longer the Senate delays, the clearer the message becomes: Greece is not a priority in Washington’s political calculus. At a time when diplomacy is essential, the U.S. has left the embassy door open—but empty.
In Greece and in Diaspora Hellenes are conscious of a long history of August foreign policy disasters and are worried about the absence of an American ambassador, especially when the US ambassador in Turkey is very active, not simply in Ankara but in the whole region surrounding Turkey.
