The scandal shaking Crete today is not merely a mafia tale. It is a story where church, politics, and family dynasties intersect in the most unholy of alliances. At its center stands Archimandrite Melchisedek Ambelikakis, elevated by Patriarch Bartholomew as an Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne—a title that immediately placed him inside the Phanar’s inner circle.
The Land That Started It All
The story begins at Stavros, the iconic “Zorba beach.” Just two miles from the historic Mitsotakis family villa, the Monastery of the Holy Trinity Tzagarolon owned 175 acres of waterfront land of immeasurable value because of its location. This estate, through mafia-style pressure and fraudulent claims, was transferred into the hands of Israeli developers, with plans to build a luxury resort.
This was not a backroom deal in a remote province. This was the Mitsotakis backyard. The monastery itself is woven into the family’s history—hosting weddings, family events, and serving as a ceremonial hub. To suggest that such a massive land grab could unfold unnoticed is to insult the intelligence of every Cretan. Nothing happens in Chania without the Mitsotakis family knowing. Nothing. In a characteristic example, the known Mitsotakis “holy family” associate in New York, TNH publisher A.Diamataris (his wife is a Mitsotakis niece and he bought the newspaper in the late 1970s with Mitsotakis “assistance”), had his daughter’s wedding (September 2021), in this same Monastery “Holy Trinity of Tzagarolon”, located just a couple of miles from the Mitsotakis Family Villa / Compound in St.Matheos, Chania, overlooking Souda Bay!!...
Melchisedek’s Rise
Into this climate entered Archimandrite Melchisedek, once a quiet parish priest in Sternes, a village also in Akrotiri – again a few miles from the Mitsotakis Family Compound. His life changed when Patriarch Bartholomew elevated him as Archimandrite of the Ecumenical Throne—a title that not only honors but also inducts a cleric into the Phanar’s innermost circle.
The timing was perfect. With Metropolitan Damaskinos of Chania gone, the succession battle for the Metropolis of Kydonia and Apokoronas became a high-stakes war. Patriarch Bartholomew had already begun laying the groundwork to rewrite the charter of the Church of Crete. Though Crete remains semi-autocephalous, with the Phanar only allowed a limited role in electing the Archbishop, planting loyalists in key sees would tilt the balance toward Constantinople.
Melchisedek was ideal: not an entrenched hierarch with independent power, but a candidate both loyal to the Phanar and acceptable to Athens. In mafia wiretaps, his name appeared as the man to be placed on the throne. Relics—bones of saints, fragments of the Cross—were invoked as bargaining chips. The underworld wanted him. The Patriarch wanted him. And soon, the government would throw its weight behind him as well.

The Hand of Mitsotakis
The strongest rival to Melchisedek was Metropolitan Amphilochios of Kissamos, beloved by the faithful and respected by clergy. But he had one fatal disadvantage: his transfer to Chania would require a “metathesi,” a canonical move that the Phanar was determined to block. The Mitsotakis government stepped in, shaping the legal framework to make such a transfer nearly impossible. Laws and decrees were suddenly tailored to match ecclesiastical politics. Amphilohios had another “disadvantage”: Last October, he dared confront the German president Steinmeier in Kandanos, where the Nazis brutally executed dozens of villagers during the German occupation of the island (link here for Helleniscope’s report)… The close connections of the Mitsotakis Family to the Germans are well-known, they started during the occupation of Greece and they have lasted until today. About fifteen years ago, the now prime minister was involved in a bribery scandal with German multinational Siemens – for which he was never held accountable…

Then came the synod itself. Amphilochios won the first round unanimously, 8–0. It seemed over. But then the Prime Minister’s office intervened. According to those present, a direct call was made: if Amphilochios was enthroned, the presidential decree required would not be issued. The threat was clear. Within hours, the vote flipped to 5–3. The process was stalled. The independence of the Church of Crete had been smothered by political diktat.

A Church Held Hostage
This is not simply about one archimandrite. It is about the subjugation of Crete’s church to the twin forces of mafia and political dynasties. It is about a Patriarch seeking to expand his grip by altering Crete’s charter. It is about a Prime Minister ensuring that nothing in Chania—land, church, or office—escapes the reach of his family’s network.
Melchisedek today stands at the nexus of it all: a man ordained by Bartholomew, advanced by mafia pressure, and defended by Mitsotakis intervention. Whether he wills it or not, he has become the symbol of a church hijacked from within.
The Final Question
For the faithful of Crete, the question is stark:
Will their shepherds be chosen by prayer—or by power? By Christ—or by the godfathers?
The throne of Chania remains vacant, but the shadow over it grows darker with every revelation.

Λυπάμαι. Τίποτε άλλο !
We are living in extremely evil times.
I have never witnessed so much evil in the last few decades as right now. Power, greed, ego, pride, lust, spite, etc rules the day.
The “Mitzi” family is a joke. A real laugh. Desperate asses trying to play god. The entire system of government, both spiritual and earthly needs to be cleansed.
