As The Odyssey moves forward under Christopher Nolan (in theaters on July 17), one absence is impossible to ignore: Greek actors are missing from the core of a story that is fundamentally Greek. Now, amid widespread reports that Helen of Troy has been race-swapped, legitimate cultural concerns are being brushed aside as noise.
Let’s be clear: This is not a trivial mythological detail.
The Odyssey and the Trojan Cycle are not free-floating fantasies. They are foundational texts of world literature and Greek civilization—stories about identity, kinship, honor, and belonging. Homer did not write in abstraction, nor did Greek artists depict these figures randomly.
Ancient texts describe Helen with specific physical traits, and Greek pottery, frescoes, and sculpture consistently portray her as a light-skinned Greek woman. This is not coincidence; it is cultural continuity.
Ignoring both the literary record and the visual evidence is not “creative freedom.”
It is cultural erasure.
A few years ago, Netflix did the same with Cleopatra, who was also Greek!!
Greeks did not cross the Aegean, unite in legend, and wage war over a symbol that looked nothing like them. Helen mattered because she was one of them. Her identity is central to the story’s meaning.
Invoking “myth” to dismiss criticism is disingenuous. Mythology is memory and self-representation, not a license to hollow cultures out while keeping their prestige.
If studios want to adapt Homer, the standard is simple:
➤ Respect the source
➤ Respect the culture
➤ Respect the people whose heritage this is
We have already seen where revisionism leads—most notably with the Cleopatra documentary—where scholarship was sidelined and criticism ignored.
The Odyssey is not a blank slate.
Helen of Troy is not an abstract symbol.
And Greek history is not raw material for someone else’s agenda.
Do not take our stories, strip them of their identity, and call it progress.

I consider my self “liberal”, but I am not woke. The casting of a black woman in place of Helen of Troy is the ultimate in wokeness. What stops them from casting a man as Helen of Troy? What about casting a white person in place of MLK, or Malcolm X?
The fact that are not as many roles for black actors does not mean that they can be squeezed intro roles that don’t fit them. Some are saying that Helen and the Trojan war is myth. Evidence exists that the Trojan war really took place. Maybe Homer used poetic license, to make the story more interesting, but it doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen.
Moreover, the Achaians and Myceneans were real and looked just as we, modern Greeks look like. DNA is almost identical of modern Greeks to the participants of the Trojan war. Chances are Helen was blond haired, just as there are blond haired Greeks today. There NO chances that she was African.
Nothing new under the sun from Godless PC woke trash giving the finger on white establishment. Latest weapon is glorification of the backward negro.
Zooe. This is not the right moment for you to prove your super-christian, non PC, non woke bona fides. Godless Hollywood is more in sync with a Homeric epic, steeped in blood, revenge, homosexual unions–Achiles and Patroclos— and women abduction and traficking, such as Helen and Brisiida (Achilles and Agamemnon’s slave lover) , than the God worshipping, white establishment that you’re defending, presumably if Helen was cast by a white actress.
