EDITOR’S NOTE (Nick Stamatakis). I was born in the early 1960s in a neighborhood of Piraeus (Kokkinia), where the memories of Nazi atrocities during WWII were alive. Similar atrocities happened in another Athens neighborhood, Kaisariani, a few months earlier in 1944. Today’s news (here is a sample from AP) was that a previously unknown set of photographs believed to show the execution of 200 Greek resistance fighters (most were communist prisoners belonging to ELAS) by Nazi occupation forces on May 1, 1944, has appeared for sale online, reportedly on eBay, and that the Greek Culture Ministry plans to buy them if they are authentic…
BELOW IS AN ARTICLE BY GIORGOS HARVALIAS ON THE SUBJECT OF GERMAN BARBARISM – both in an English Translation and the Greek original.
======================

By George Harvalias
A great German philosopher, Friedrich Hegel, attempting to interpret the whims of History, concluded that events repeat themselves: the first time as tragedy and the second as farce.
The quotation, of course, is attributed to another far more famous German who changed the course of the modern world, Karl Marx. But the authorship of the saying is of little importance. The crucial question arising in our time is whether events might repeat themselves a third time — in the form of a nightmare. And when we speak of Germans, we could never rule that out.
Within the framework of the systematic revision of History that has recently been attempted, one may also place the erasure — or more precisely, the “softening of impressions” through offsetting and embellishments — of the inhuman German crimes committed in occupied Greece.
The truth, however, is that during their presence in our homeland a small holocaust took place. From Crete to Kommeno and from Kalavryta to Hortiatis. Note this: that holocaust did not have a racist or racial character. It had a purely punitive dimension. Its sole aim was to break the morale of a people who found the courage to resist. The morale of bravery you see in the photographs published today. For none of the patriots led to the firing squad — fully aware of what awaits them — bears the look of a desperate condemned man. Only the look of anger and pride.

The Germans killed the patriots by lining them up without hesitation against a wall at the old shooting range, just as they killed tens of thousands of others outside their homes — civilians and unsuspecting people, the elderly, women and children. Their atrocities have no precedent in modern history. Only the Turks rival them…
That is why Franklin Roosevelt, perhaps the greatest American president of the modern era, toward the end of the war — when it had become clear that the monster of Nazism had been defeated — called his close friend Henry Morgenthau to discuss the “punishment” of those responsible. “These people,” he said, “are incorrigible. I say we sterilize them so they cannot repeat their crimes!”
Poor Morgenthau, gentle and mild-mannered, nearly fell from his chair. “Mr. President, that cannot be done,” he replied courageously. “But I will draft a plan for the postwar treatment of Germany and you will be certain that we will rid ourselves once and for all of the nightmare of its geostrategic ambitions. Because it will not possess an industry capable of supporting them.”
Reassured, Roosevelt — who could not refuse his close friend, then Secretary of the Treasury — closed the discussion with a caveat: “I don’t know what you will do, but make sure these people never wear a cap and uniform again in their lives! And never fly an airplane again! Not even a glider…”
Roosevelt, unfortunately, left life prematurely. Morgenthau was “dismissed” by Truman, who had his mind only on the… Soviet bear. The Morgenthau Plan was thrown in the trash, and the Germans not only went unpunished but were generously strengthened to rebuild their industry — the very same industry that had fueled Hitler’s war machine and today keeps Zelensky standing on the Ukrainian front.
So the Germans not only put on uniform and cap again, not only rebuilt the Luftwaffe and sent it to bomb Serbia, but today proclaim themselves ready to replace the Americans as Europe’s defensive pillar. Without a whisper of protest, without the slightest concern or objection from those who remember their past, they are now building a gigantic armaments program — just as they did on the eve of the two world wars.
And as if that were not enough, they are dragging the entire EU into an arms crescendo, choosing the enemy themselves: the Russians, with whom they have old accounts to settle, since they never digested the fact that it was essentially the Russians who defeated them, reaching all the way to Berlin.
Suddenly, all of Europe lives in the frenzy of the Russian threat. And it seeks revenge for the last war — not on behalf of the victors, but of the defeated! The Germans’ “Russophobic” ambitions have now become the official European narrative. And their desire to steer Europe’s defense — they who within two decades burned it twice — is considered something… normal, supposedly Europe’s answer to Trump’s audacity! Without anyone asking how the former slaughterers of European peoples can guarantee the security of Europe’s borders. And without anyone asking whether Europe is threatened by Russia or by the mass illegal immigration of Muslims, as the “bad” Trump correctly points out.
Amid all this irrationality, Merz’s Germany believes the time has now come to fulfill another long-held ambition: to enter the nuclear game, taking the keys from the pockets of two “useful idiots,” who are portrayed as its employees — British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The new plan envisions freeing Europe from the American nuclear umbrella and replacing it with equivalent French and British systems. Except that the “keys” will not belong solely to their owners. Germany will also have a say, suddenly acquiring through the back door a… nuclear button. To settle its accounts with the Russians!
Can you imagine it, looking at those forgotten photographs of the anonymous heroes of Kaisariani? That the day would come when we would place their executioners in charge of guarding our homes against a completely nonexistent threat? And that we would push the planet into a nuclear adventure to satisfy Berlin’s nationalist vanity?
I fear this is not a guarantee of security for our future generations, but a guarantee of entanglement with a very ugly ending. The Germans are returning to play their familiar game, betting on the lack of historical memory among us younger generations about what earlier Greeks endured at their hands — those who chose to resist. That is why front pages like today’s have invaluable worth…

Μήπως οι Γερμανοί… ξανάρχονται;

Μπορείτε, λοιπόν, να το φανταστείτε, κοιτώντας εκείνες τις ξεχασμένες φωτογραφίες με τους ανώνυμους ήρωες της Καισαριανής; Ότι θα ερχόταν η μέρα που θα βάζαμε τους σφαγείς τους να μας φυλάνε τα σπίτια από μια εντελώς ανύπαρκτη απειλή; Κι ότι θα σπρώχναμε τον πλανήτη σε μια πυρηνική περιπέτεια για να ικανοποιηθεί η εθνικιστική ματαιοδοξία του Βερολίνου;

I have studied extensively the outrages of Germany during WWII. And they are as bad, or even worse than anyone could even imagine. Greece was one of her victims. There were many factors that caused a cultured, civilized nation to commit such atrocities.
One of the factors is that the Germans had committed the same genocide to the Herrera peoples of Southwest Africa, in the early 1900’s before WWI. The killing of those natives was so methodical, that even today, the population hasn’t recovered. Why did this happen and why was there no outcry from the civilized world?
At the time of the early 20th century, the philosophy of Eugenics was prevalant. The theory was that the “smart races”, meaning Northern Europeans would eventually lead the world, due to their intellect, while all the others would either give way to the obvious superiority of the Arian race, or be exterminated.
America herself was a slavish follower of the Eugenics theory. Hence the immigration act of 1924, barring everyone, except Northern Europeans from immigrating. America had relegated her black population to a status worse than the Jews of Germany. The KKK was in its glory. America was not that far from Nazi Germany.
What triggered Germany’s extremist Nazism, was the First World War and its aftermath. Germany was not allowed to have an industrial capacity, no air force, no navy, an army of less than 100,000, had lost territory and was allowed to be an agrarian society only. Just as the writer of the above article claims should still be the case today. That kind of punishment is unworkable. You can’t force a nation of 84 million to live on growing tomatoes and cucumbers.
The great depression was the needle that broke the camel’s back. Hitler took over and did wonders. Modern highways were built, workers were paid to have vacations, jobs were plentyfull, the VW bug was created for the “volks” the people, and priced accordingly.
But, along with prosperity, the people were served a healthy portion of hate. Against their tiny Jewish minority, against the gypsies, the mentally ill, the homosexuals, anyone who didnt look Aryan enough.
When hate established itself, it takes root and chokes everything else. Just as today’s Trump-lead America is. Full of hate for others, which hate has metastacized against white Americans, as we saw in Minneapolis.
The question is: Can the Germans rise again, to the point of what they were in the 1930’s? The answer could be yes, if you believe that a nation has the destructive bug in their DNA. I dont believe in such a thing. Any country that’s industrially advanced can turn into a monster. Japan was one. Its peaceful now. America had come close to it, but Trumpism shows that it could happen here. Russia could very well be one, except that their debacle in Ukraine proves that they dont have the capability. Unless the go the nuclear route.
European medium and small nations, at this time, have nothing to fear from Germany. Germany is not what she once was. More than 45% of the newborns are from other nations. The German “blood” has been mixed with others’, who don’t carry Germany’s baggage of guilt. Germany is a mature democracy. No democracy ever goes to aggressive war. Russia on the other hand is a dictatorship. That’s the ones you have to watch out for.
If it was a choice, I would trust the Germans much more than Putin’s Russia.
Bob,
First off, Germany “is” very much already nuclear…they had nuclear powerplants that they chose to shut down starting in the 1980s, and 40 years later they are reconsidering, now that they have an energy crisis. They have the ability to produce whatever they want in that area…
But on the other point… when they
1) largely control the ECB, when they
2)largely were behind the “Greek liquidity crisis” that imposed punitive “Memoranda” and resulted in a slashingpensions of respectable citizens to below the poverty rate, when
3) they supported the Greek Banking system by “forgiving” the “bad debt”, but forcing the “bad debt” into the hands of “Funds” that then started confiscating Greek debtor’s homes (now that their pensions were slashed)…
Isn’t that “Financial Execution” of the Greek people? If the banks got bailed out, why wouldn’t you also give a “haircut” to the people who held the debt, now that their pensions (and salaries) were slashed and their ability to pay back was rendered impossible? And before we go any further, the money they gave to the Ukraine (in a generous manner) the last few years makes the Greek bailouts look like “peanuts”…
So, the “mean German mindset” (maybe even some Eugenics) still exists in that culture, but manifesting with the help of “financial bullets” this time, given that Greece gave ceded its sovereignty to the ECB when it joined the Euro, and relies on someone else to “print money” and “distribute allowances” (war rations) to its people… the Greek politicians are certainly accomplices, and the Greek voters certainly guilty of allowing a lot of this, but those facts don’t change “German attitudes”…
Markos.
Germany is not a nuclear power. Nuclear energy does not make a nuclear bomb.
As for the Greek financial collapse, let’s take on some responsibility here. Greece’s Pangalos said “We all ate them”. Meaning the money borrowed. Greeks were living high on the hog, retiring at 40 years old–I know plenty who were bragging about that–talking about the “koutofrangous” that the “smart” Greeks were taking advantage of. Let’s be honest here. No Greek found easy money that he didnt gorge upon. Even today, the theft of the hundreds of million in EU agricultural funds is making Greece look like she never learned her lesson.
Your “financial execution” part is an attempt to whitewash the Greeks’ responsibility and place it on the lenders. When Greeks were cooking their books, to prove that the economy was healthy and the debt to GDP ratio was under control, wasn’t it their fault?
Borrowed money has to be paid back. No lender is going to forgive it, because that’s how finances work.
So, the Greek financial collapse is not the same as the German occupation. Trying to tie the two as if there’s any similarity is discounting the pain, suffering and death of the Greeks in 1941-44. That is wrong
Bob this too simplistic an approach. It has been recently verified (Epstein files) what many of us knew all along: Greece was loaded with debt in order for German and French banks to be saved. The banks are LIABLE because they lender money to an entity (Greece) which was not creditworthy. In such a situation the banks should pay the price of their mistakes and Greece should declare bankruptcy. What bankruptcy would mean for Greece? The credit should take a “haircut” – in other words be reduced in order for the country to afford to pay it back. Instead of doing this standardised and lawful approach, the creditors illegally and nonsensically and self-servedly the “put a wig” in the debt and extended it to eternity. So Greece will be forever indebted unless its citizens revolt and demand NOW from the EU “banksters” to do what they should have done 10 years ago. Does Greece have leverage to demand such a thing? Yes she does!!! Look at the map!! Greece has the best geostrategic geography on Earth! She just needs a few patriot leaders instead of the traitors governing now…
I agreed with much of what you said and then you said you trusted Germany more than Putin’s Russia. From a Greek standpoint, Russia is much more preferable than the Germans. When Greece became independent the Bavarian Otto became King. His German advisors turned free Greece into a colony.
The police and military were filled with Germans. The Church of Greece was forced to westernize and we see here a precedent for what the US has done to the Greek Churches in our day. Four hundred monasteries in Greece were closed, the septuagaint version of the Old Testament was banned, and Byzantine iconography was replaced by western iconography. In 1843, the Greeks revolted and expelled the German advisors and Otto to his became a Greek and adopted pro Russian sympathies.
During the First World War, the Germans armed the Turks and helped them perpetrate genocide against the Greeks, Armenians, and Assyrians. And we know the Germans policies in Greece during World War 2.
In addition, Germany bears large responsibility for the war in former Yugoslavia. Germany along with the Vatican recognized Croatia at the expense of Serbia, Greece’s closest ally in the region.
What is with the anti Russian sentiment among Greeks? Russia alone has never meddled in Greek affairs or disrespected Greece. And a reminder that Russia helped kill the Annan Plan for Cyprus in 2004.
Theodoros. As I said. The difference between Russia and Germany today is that Germany is a mature democracy, while Russia is a dictatorship. Democracies dont start wars of conquest. That’s why Germany is to be trusted, while Russia is not.
No doubt Russia helped Greece during the liberation struggle. Not so much because of being a fellow Orthodox, but because she was in competition with England and France, to exert influence in the control of the Aegean. Don’t forget that the Russian Czar at the time of Greece’s declaration of independence renounced the Greek revolution, because he considered it as anti-royalist revolt, not a national uprising. for freedom.
Russia changed tack when that emperor died in 1826. But don’t forget that Russia gave Ataturk military help, during the Greek Smyrna occupation by Greece. And then, during the Stalin era of terror, banished all the Greeks of Russia to Tajikistan.
This is not a matter of history, as much as a matter of current political trends. Greece is part of NATO and the EU. She can’t be half-way. She has to be part of the alliance, the alliance sees Russia as a danger to Europe’s freedom. Greece can’t enjoy the benefits of the EU while plotting against her.
Bob, with due respect I completely disagree with your portrayals of Germany and Russia. Russia is not a dictatorship. Russia is quite simply not the client state that it was when Boris Yeltsin was in power.
The real hostility toward Russia is that Putin defends Russian sovereignty and independence. Greece would be fortunate to have that kind of leader. Germany is not only a mature democracy, it is an aggressive and dominant country with a history of imperialism and genocide.
The players have changed. There is no Kaiser or Hitler, but Germany remains a bully and an arrogant one at that. I will repeat again that “democratic” Germany played a role in the dismemberment of Yugoslavia. Germany has never been a friend to Greece.
Mitsotakis asked the Germans not to sell submarines to the Turks and was rebuffed. Greek Russian relations have never been permitted to develop. The Germans, British, and the Americans have always interfered in Greece and blocked Athens from pursuing relations with Russia.
Greece is a member of NATO and the EU.
And these alliances condemn Greece. NATO supported the Turkish invasion of Cyprus and refuses to condemn Turkish threats to invade Greece. The EU is destroying Europe with its insane pro LGBT policies and continued tolerance for Muslim migrants who are beginning to take over.
Greece is not a free nation. Its leaders have abandoned Greek interests for NATO and EU interests. Russia is no danger to Greece and Greece should not be involved in NATO’s aggressions. Russia is no danger to anyone as Moscow responded to NATO’s provocations which include overthrowing Ukraine’s democratic government in 2014 and expanding to the Russian border.
Your assertion that “democracies do not start wars against each other” is a classic neoconservative statement. I believe it was the neoconservative warmonger Jeanne Kirkpatrick who said that. NATO overthrew the democratic government of Ukraine in 2014.
NATO also pushed Prime Minister Karamanlis from five. Karamanlis was a democratically elected Prime Minister who sought to come to an agreement with Russia because he though lt it was interests to do so. The idea that NATO or the west in general support democracy is easily disproved.
As for Russia and Ataturk. It was Lenin and Trotsky who supported Ataturk. Not exactly real Russians. On an occasion or so, the Tsar might have disappointed but the fact is that the Germans, British, and Americans have done enormous harm to Greece.
The British, French, and Italians all armed Kemal in Asia Minor and let the Turks slaughter the Greeks and Armenians. The British I might add opposed Cyprus in its pursuit of enosis and encouraged Turkey to claim Cyprus.
Greece’s relations with the west has been very costly.
We read in the news that the photos from the Kesariani execution that are for sale are 12! So, why the media have published only 5 photos?
