I have to admit that I am enjoying the last few weeks – regarding the sudden turn of events and the apparent AIPAC (Israeli Lobby) actions against NYC Mayor Eric Adams and AB Elpidophoros, the two most prominent “political assets” of Turkey in America… It’s not “schadenfreude” about the Archbishop’s failure; I do not enjoy others’ misfortunes. But I certainly appreciate the great company of the so-called “journalists” in our community, TNH, and others who suddenly woke up to reality and “discovered” various aspects of Elpidophoros’s failed tenure. More than four years ago, in the Spring of 2019, I was a rather lonely voice. My articles were published in a small Greek-speaking newspaper, “Efimerida of NY,” and for a little while in kalami.us (Helleniscope’s debut was in the fall of 2019). My views touched a nerve, and several community “leaders” questioned my judgment. I explained to them that it was not a matter of “judgment,” but my duty as a journalist was to look under the appearances and discover the truth about people and events.
What was I writing these days? What were my severe reservations about the new Archbishop that led me to criticize his “election” from the first day? Why did I call him “Elpidoktonos” (“Hope-killer”) so early? I will post some of these writings soon. But here I can summarize them as follows – in this condensed excerpt of my commentary on May 18, 2019, just one week after Elpidophoros’ election and a month before his arrival and enthronement:
1) If the Greece-Turkey confrontation in the Aegean ends in a war, which country will Elpidophoros pray for? Which country’s troops will he bless? We have every right to know his position because of his “boss”, Pat. Bartholomew, who has blessed the Turkish troops in their invasion and illegal occupation of Syrian territory…
2) If the Greek-American community proceeds with a petition to recognize the Hellenic Genocides of Asia Minor, will Elpidophoros stand with us, or will he stand in the way? The pressures faced by Arch. Demetrios regarding this matter are well known and possibly led, among other things, to his resignation.
3) Will Elpidophoros be transparent regarding the Archdiocese’s finances? More specifically, will he publish the salary list of its employees on the Archdiocese’s website? Will he do the same for the endowments?
4) If a parish is closed and its properties are sold, will he promise that the proceeds will not end up in the bottomless coffers of the Patriarchate?
5) Tens of millions of dollars have been collected and are resting in “patriarchal funds” in the USA, while the Archdiocese is almost bankrupt. What does he intend to do? Will he support the interests of the Patriarch or the Greek Church of America?
6) What is his position on the issue of homosexuality of priests and hierarchs? Will he show tolerance like Bartholomew, who, instead of punishing them, rewarded them? And what is his position on gay marriage?
Let me stop here and take a minute and pat myself on the back… Very prophetic, wouldn’t you say?
One of the leaders who questioned my judgment then, in the early days of Elpidophoros’ election, was Savvas Tsivicos, then just a Cypriot-American leader, and now the Supreme President of AHEPA who recently sent a letter to the Patriarch (SAVVAS TSIVICOS LETTER TO PAT. BARTHOLOMEW) requesting a visit with him on January 13-14, “to discuss in person and in detail the current status of affairs and also analyze why certain people (by name) are working behind your back to destroy the Archbishop’s legacy here in the United States. These individuals promote unfounded allegations and division in the community so they can control our church”.
Tsivicos asked me then (early June 2019, via email) “Where am I basing my accusation that Elpidophoros is an agent of the Turks.” I responded that I had done a doctoral degree on aspects of the Cyprus conflict and extensive work on Greek foreign policy issues, and I don’t say things “on the fly.” Then I added this link from the review “Veterans Today”, dated August 18, 2018, and titled “Greece: A high-ranking cleric turned out to be an agent of Turkish intelligence,” referring to Elpidophoros’s meteoric rise to the hierarchy, explained chiefly by his ties to Turkish intelligence. This was one of the many indications we had…
Tsivicos then explained that he agreed with some of the things I wrote and that, living in Turkey, you must compromise on certain things. “But there is no chance for him to be an agent,” he explained emphatically.
This exchange happened in early June 2019 via email. Two years later, in September 2021, Elpidophoros ignored specific warnings from Greek and Cypriot diplomats, attended the inauguration of the Turkish House in NYC, stood next to the Turkish-Cyprtiot leader Mr. Tatar, lending him instant recognition, and bowed in front of Sultan Erdogan. Helleniscope had also issued a warning ahead of time.
I then emailed Mr.Tsivicos, asking whether he had any comments. I have never heard a louder silence in my life…
Well, it’s our turn now to ask Mr.Tsivicos certain questions.
- First and foremost, he must explain his lack of judgment, specifically his failure to evaluate Elpidophoros correctly despite all the evidence available. Why did he fail? Did he have a hidden relationship with Elpidophoros that blinded his judgment? Did he have any other relationship with other agents, American or foreign, based on interest, financial or otherwise?
- Why did he do everything possible to help Elpidophoros recover from the Turkish House visit in September 2021? An average community leader would be very suspicious of offering any help to Elpiodophoros after the Turkish House debacle. What was the exchange? What did he gain by supporting Elpidophoros so feverishly? The whole community was up in arms not only from this specific event but also from very serious matters of faith, specifically his “multiple spoons” and his open support of homosexuality, among other issues.
- Maybe the exchange was specific duties the Archbishop gave him, such as collecting dues from all parishes in the NJ Metropolis (covering several states, NJ, Phila, DE, MD, and VA)? What does he gain out of this? Is he simply acting like an “Ottoman Tax Collector,” a “pasha”? What’s in this for him?
- Further, he has to explain why he overstepped other AHEPA leaders to become the organization’s Supreme President. I have heard complaints from people who had spent years establishing themselves in the ranks, working hard, and contributing time and money. Suddenly, they were pushed aside for Mr. Tsivicos to become Supreme President.
- He must also explain AHEPA’s positions on the Cyprus problem and the other Greek issues (EEZ, 12-mile territorial waters declaration by Greece, Name of Macedonia issue, etc). Where do AHEPA’s positions differ from those of the State Department? Would Mr.Tsivikos enlighten us? And why does the State Dept. act as a travel agency for AHEPA every time the organization pays an official visit to Greece? Do the Israeli and Jewish organizations do the same when they visit Israel? I am afraid not.
- Finally and most importantly, he has to explain whether he followed standard procedure before sending the recent letter to the Patriarch. Did he have a meeting with his Executive Board? Our information suggests otherwise, and it would be nice if Mr.Tsivicos could clarify.
We are anxiously awaiting Mr. Tsivicos’ response.
PS1. Some of the questions above also apply to Cypriot-American leader Philip Christopher, who showed extreme enthusiasm in helping the Archbishop recover from the Turkish House debacle. Why do he and Tsivicos find the Archbishop such an “asset” at the same time as formerly flourishing parishes with thousands of members (Astoria, Flushing, Hempstead, etc) are collapsing from non-participation? Why are they going against the people they supposedly represent?
PS2. I debated whether I should waste my time and yours writing about Stella Kokkolis, the so-called president of a “ghost” Education Association. Her numerous “trespasses” since the 1990s are not forgotten, and she is discredited. Does she, or Elpidoktonos, believe that her letters are helping? The more she opens her unworthy mouth, the more she proves that the Archbishop is a failed leader.
PS3. Many kudos to the Hellenic American National Congress (HANC) and its President Bill Mataragas. He and his organization were the only ones who asked in writing the Archbishop’s resignation right after the Turkish House visit!

What procedures are in place to get this done?
Tsivicos should also explain why he attended an indicted senator’s press conference in his capacity as Ahepa’s top officer and, like a mafioso, publicly criticized the prosecutor. How is Ahepa involved in a bribery case? How is Tsivicos involved?
Why is the non-political Ahepa taking a position in Israel’s invasion of Gaza? Tsivicos urged Ahepa’s “40,000 members” to support the invasion without mentioning a word about Greek residents and churches in the war zone, let alone innocent Palestinian newborns at the hospital. Who authorized this clown to speak on our behalf?
Why do Tsivicos and Mossaidis report to the IRS that they collected membership dues from only 16,000 members?Are they pocketing the dues assessments from the remaining 24,000 members (at $50 per head, that’s $1.2 million per year). Tsivicos must either produce this amount or admit he lies about how many members are in Ahepa.
It’s a matter of time before Tsivicos faces a judge to make an honest Ahepan out of him.

There is a loss of over 700 members per year, which will make Ahepa extinct within 20 years. Most who remain are old and unaware of how the Supremes spend their money. Most members have good intentions and think they help a sacred cause. Instead they fund Mossaidis’ $200K salary (per the tax returns), plus expense accounts, plus several all-expense paid trips abroad as VIPs for on which they have pretty photo ops.
Several Supremes are growing morbidly obese sucking the nipple of Ahepa’s treasury… Just look at them. Elpi knows that Ahepa’s tax returns report $17 million in assets and a dying membership. I don’t know if you can call me naive but I can certainly call you idealistic…
I appreciate your comments and always wonderful insights. But in the last few years calling them “Turks” took a truly substantive meaning. Because it started meaning that they openly cooperate with the Turkish authorities in order to diminish the power of the Hellenic Diaspora. On May 2018, over one year before Elpidophoros’ arrival, we had the enthronement of Metropolitan Nathanael in Chicago. The day after his enthronement, he accepted a visit of the Turkish Consul in Chicago. The Greek Consul managed to see him 3-4 months later…
This was a turning point: we have never seen anything like that in the history of this Church. The rest toy can read in this article – please pay special attention in the link to the “Veterans Today” of August 2018.
Conclusion: In the last few years they are acting like Turks and need to be called out with their true name. I will stop here but I could go on and give you many examples like the ones here…

I agree with you on the non transparency of individual salaries. I have been calling and writing the archdiocese for a lit of salaries, and they are refusing to open the books. I have been communicating with about 200 people, mostly from my church, letting them know of such refusals. I had a tet a tet with George Tsougarakis, the archdioces’s attorney, at our church of St George in Ocean Township N.J. last Sunday. I wrote about the outcome. I’m copying and pasting my report of the meeting.
“””In the interest of total transparency of anything that has to do with our church I am reporting on a conversation that took place yesterday, during coffee hour with the resident attorney of the archdiocese.
I never had any intention of finding out what the salaries of the archdiocese employees, clergy and laity are. I was concerned, that it would be too lavish for a small Archdiocese such as ours and was reluctant to let my faith be shaken. I was hoping that someone is looking out for our hard earned money. That belief collapsed after the scandal of the missing millions during the building of Saint Nicholas shrine in NYC. The insult to injury was when I read the indictment of Jerry Dimitriou and discovered that his salary was as high as $490,000.00!. The archbishop put out a statement that the sordid business of alleged theft was behind us, with the slap on the wrist that Dimitriou received for tax evasion only. He was exonerated for the alleged theft of funds from the archdiocese. Another accused person was also exonerated. I realize that these alleged thefts happened before the tenure of the current archbishop, but, the high salaries must have been approved by the archdiocesan board. Not only were salaries scandalously high, but also there were many hires that were getting paid to do nothing. The payroll was reduced by a large number, to satisfy the loan’s conditions that was obtained in order for the archdiocese to keep functioning.
The discovery that Jerry Dimitriou was receiving such a high salary prompted me to ask, as a concerned, life time member of our church, what the salaries of the five highest paid earners are. I sent a letter to the archdiocesan offices, with my request and received a reply from Elaine Allen, which letter emphasized that the archdiocese is committed to 100% transparency, but that transparency is limited to what they want to show us, which of course is a mockery to our intelligence. The letter, which I attached a copy, directs me to the archdiocese web site, for financial statements. Of course, the website does not contain individual salaries, but only the total payroll and benefits paid out, which amounts to $14.5 million. When I called back and spoke to Elaine, to express my disappointment at the lack of salary information, I asked her how many people does that $14.5 million cover. First she said 80 people, then 100 people. A simple math, if 100 people are paid out of that amount, the average salary would be $145,500 per year. Of course, the secretaries and office workers are paid about half of that amount, which tells us that the higher ups receive substantially higher pay. Of course, this is just speculation.
The lawyer for the Archdiocese. George Tsougarakis attended his father’s one year memorial at our church, yesterday. When I had spoken to him over the phone, he proposed that i drive to the archdiocese in NYC and meet with him. I refused, because its a day long affair and I knew that he was going to spin the truth and cause frustration on my part. But since he came to our neck of the woods, I seized the opportunity, went up to him, introduced myself, wished him “Zoi se esas”, (Life to you) due to the memorial and asked him if I can ask him some questions. To which he replied positively. MY first question was if he works at the archdiocese full time. His answer is that he is. Then, I asked him what his yearly pay and benefits are. That, he refused to answer and asked me why I’m asking. I replied that as a paying member, we, the members pay his salary and its only right that we know how much we’re paying him. He replied, do you want to know what my son’s and wife’s salary is, also? I replied not unless the archdiocese pays them. Then, he asked me what I make a year. I answered him, even though I’m self employed and have to obligation to divulge such information to anyone other than the IRS. The questions and answers were the same, him refusing to tell me his salary and telling me that the price of gas is high and he has to commute, and other such facts that are understood, and everyone has those expenses, but still no salary information. What impressed me in a bad way is that his arguments are so childish and nonsensical, that I had to tell him that he is reacting very unprofessionally. The refusal to answer my query is an indication of the disrespectful way, that we, the faithful supporters of our church are treated. He even told me that if I’m not happy with the secrecy, then, donate less money to the church. I replied that if everyone did that, then, our churches will close. Realizing that I wont get the information that I’m looking for, I wished him well and left.
I didnt get too far. He caught up with me and the same conversation continued. He added the information that he is very busy, because there are 48 lawsuits that he is currently fighting. The reason for that, as he said is because of the law that opened up a period of one year, for complaints that happened years ago and were passed their expiration date. That extension of one year, which expired last Friday, is what enabled a woman to sue and win $5 million from the former president and there have been a flurry of other lawsuits against rap stars for abuse of female employees. expressed surprise that our church has such lawsuits pending, alongside with such infamous individuals, while we have not heard anything about them. He said I can look them up on court records. When I pointed out to him that such attitudes are a major cause of the continuing loss of members of our church, he replied that that’s not the only cause. Which implies that he is aware of the damage being inflicted on our church by such secrecy, but he is unwilling to institute change, presumably because his compensation comes before any such concerns.
Then, Goerge Kostidis appears in the middle of our conversation and tells George Tsougarakis that he should join his family at their table. I’m not sure under what capacity Kostidis interfered in our conversation, was it as a friend of Tsougarakis, as the president of our community, or as husband to Marissa, who is also a long time employee of the archdiocese. None of those capacities give the right to anyone to interfere in an adult conversation. Marissa of course was not asked about her salary and benefits, but, it would be nice if she informs us. Kostidis broke into the conversation, without any greetings to me, while I imagine he had already greeted Tsougarakis. Kostidis acted like I wasn’t present. I asked Kostidis if he realizes that Tsougarakis is a grown man and can make his own decisions. I dont have him restrained and of course can join his family at any time he pleases.
Saint Paul, in his second letter to Korinthians, 1:12-23 explains himself, why he had not visited their city, even though he had promised. His integrity was questioned, but Paul’s history of transparency with them ensured that the Korinthians would continue to trust him. . “We have behaved in the world with frankness and godly sincerity,” he reminds them (2 kor. 1:12).Because they have seen him in action, they know he says what he means without vacillating (2 Kor. 1:17–20). This makes him sure they “will understand until the end” (2 Kor. 1:1–13),
If Saint Paul had to earn the respect and trust of the first Christians, why are St. Paul’s heirs not following his example?

In my over 7 decades of following the so-called “Greek American Experience”– up to then, AHEPAN’s overall “seemed” to be a more conservative lot! If they were Eisenhower/Nixon republicans– all that changed that summer. My Queens and Brooklyn “Sons of Pericles” Cousins were all conservative republicans –up till that summer… my point– the bottom-line is that AHEPA, as we knew it “evolved” during that ghastly summer of invasion. They turned against the republicans and started to support the democrat’ party and its agenda… this leads us to where we are today… not in such a good place..
