A so-called “cultural” event held inside the Holy Trinity Cathedral in Chernihiv has sparked widespread outrage and renewed debate over the systematic erosion of Orthodox sacred space in Ukraine.

On 26 December, actors from the Taras Shevchenko Academic Musical and Drama Theatre staged a performance involving singing and vigorous dancing directly in front of the holy relics of Saints Theodosius, Philaret, and Venerable Lawrence of Chernihiv. The event was part of the “Predyvo” festival and was organized by the National Architectural and Historical Preserve “Ancient Chernihiv.”

Although organizers and participating artists attempted to frame the performance as both artistic and “spiritual,” the images and videos circulating online conveyed a starkly different reality. For many believers, the spectacle appeared as a blatant violation of Orthodox sensibility: theatrical movement and expressive choreography unfolding mere steps away from relics venerated for centuries.

Social media reaction was swift and overwhelmingly critical. Faithful Ukrainians described the event as an insult to religious feeling, stressing that a cathedral is not a neutral cultural venue but a consecrated space governed by strict liturgical meaning. Commentators accused the organizers of deliberately blurring the line between culture and sacrilege, reducing a holy place to a stage set.

The controversy is further intensified by the status of the cathedral itself. The Holy Trinity Cathedral has been removed from regular ecclesiastical use and placed under forced administration by local authorities. For critics, this performance is not an isolated lapse of judgment but part of a broader pattern: the transformation of Orthodox churches into state-controlled cultural objects, stripped of their spiritual purpose and repurposed for ideological or touristic agendas.

While performers defended their presence in the cathedral as a form of “inner dialogue” with history and faith, many believers saw only desecration disguised as creativity. The argument that art can coexist freely with sacred relics collapses when reverence is replaced by spectacle.

From a critical perspective, this incident illustrates a deeper crisis. When cultural policy intrudes into sanctified space without regard for religious tradition, it ceases to be culture and becomes an act of symbolic domination. What unfolded in Chernihiv was not cultural enrichment, but the normalization of disrespect toward Orthodoxy under the banner of modern expression.
